Microsoft has begun enforcing the end of support for legacy V3 and V4 printer drivers in Windows 11, a change that took effect with updates starting in January 2026. This deprecation, first announced in September 2023, prevents new third-party printer drivers from being published to Windows Update for Windows 11 and later versions. The move aims to enhance security, reduce stability issues, and modernize the printing system by prioritizing Microsoft's built-in IPP inbox class driver and Print Support Apps. Older printers relying exclusively on these legacy drivers may fail to install or function properly after the updates, particularly impacting small businesses, schools, and home users with outdated hardware. Microsoft advises users to contact printer manufacturers for updated drivers or compatible alternatives to avoid disruptions.
