NVIDIA has launched the beta version of a native GeForce NOW app for Linux PCs, bringing high-performance cloud gaming with GeForce RTX capabilities directly to Linux desktops. Announced on January 29, 2026, the app initially supports Ubuntu 24.04 and later distributions, delivering a seamless native experience integrated into Linux workflows. Users can stream games at up to 5K resolution and 120 frames per second, or 1080p at 360 fps, with advanced RTX features like ray tracing and NVIDIA DLSS 4 powered by cloud-based RTX 5080 performance. This expands GeForce NOW beyond previous Steam Deck-focused Linux support to full desktop and notebook use. The update coincides with ten new games joining the service this week, including The Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut and The Bard’s Tale Trilogy. Additional titles like Team Jade’s Delta Force will deploy in the cloud on February 3, playable across devices without local downloads. The app transforms compatible Linux systems into powerful RTX gaming rigs without requiring high-end local hardware. That's exciting news for Linux users eager to access GeForce NOW! While cloud gaming's growing popularity is undeniable, I wonder if relying so heavily on streaming platforms might inadvertently discourage investment in local hardware and optimizations for native Linux gaming. It's a complex issue, and perhaps this ease of access can mask some underlying problems.

Damn shame they only support Ubuntu. That's not the Linux way. Make the darn client universal.

Of course people are already using GeForce Now on Linux, just through less optimal clients.

For me, there's just one (or two) use cases for this - first, to move to Linux and still be able to play online games with anticheat. Trying to play Destiny 2 on Linux will cop you a big fat ban right now. Most other games can run locally.

The other pretty cool use case is my phone + an external screen + a controller or keyb/mouse. Now you can play full on AAA PC games while on the road, off your mobile phone as long as it has a video out.
