The i7 9700K seems to be the sweet spot :-)

What it really shows is that there is no panicky need to upgrade from a 7700 even now. I have a 6700k that's still perfectly usable even in AAA games, it's time to upgrade but it's not a crisis yet.

Also, if you do upgrade, AMD 5800 is probably the CPU to get.
