NVIDIA's Next-Generation Ampere GPUs to be 50% Faster than Turing - tech
(hx) 05:07 PM CET - Jan,03 2020 - Post a comment / read (8)
As we approach the release of NVIDIA's Ampere GPUs, which are rumored to launch in the second half of this year, more rumors and information about the upcoming graphics cards are appearing. Today, according to the latest report made by Taipei Times, NVIDIA's next-generation of graphics cards based on "Ampere" architecture is rumored to have as much as 50% performance uplift compared to the previous generations of Turing GPUs, while using having half the power consumption.

Built using TSMC's 7 nm manufacturing node, Ampere is poised to be the new king among all future GPUs. The rumored 50% performance increase is not impossible, due to features and improvements that the new 7 nm manufacturing node brings. If utilizing the density alone, NVIDIA can extract at least 50% extra performance that is due to the use of a smaller node. However, performance should increase even further because Ampere will bring new architecture as well. Combining a new manufacturing node and new microarchitecture, Ampere will reduce power consumption in half, making for a very efficient GPU solution. We still don't know if the performance will increase mostly for ray tracing applications, or will NVIDIA put the focus on general graphics performance.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I believe it but how about price? Their cards are a rip-off.

Csimbi(07:58 PM CET - Jan,03 2020 )
Smaller die -> cheaper
Less power required -> cheaper
So, you should be able to get a pretty good card for $300.
Just wait for the initial hype to subside.

well 1660Ti = smaller die = less power = cost more than 1070. Nuff said. same goes for 1080 vs 2070, etc.
Newer = more expensive. Only rule there is really. I mean, is 1660 good deal for $270? 1660S for 300? I don't think so.

So they sell 1080p cards for $300. How generous of them.

Csimbi(02:22 PM CET - Jan,04 2020 )
1070s and 1660s are decent cards for 300.
Runs most games in max. detail at 1920x1200.

You want 4K gaming? That'll require cash, yes.
It's a wagon I ain't going to jump on; waste of money.
Turn off a few eye candies and these cards will give you 4k gaming, too.
It's always a compromise. Either money or eye candy.
Very few games are better with all eye candies turned on. So...

Yes, newer is usually more expensive. For us.
For nVidia, it's always cheaper, but they want to milk the cow like everybody else.
They always follow the same pattern:
- sell with max. profit for the select few
- sell with substantial profit for a wider audience
- sell with profit for the mainstream
- sell with minor profit for the masses
- sell with no profit or loss to wipe from market.
So, you need to wait a bit and see what's a good price for you.

When the release cycles are quick, you can get used cards at good discounts, too.

1070 is ~$170 not $300. For 300 You should get 1440p card.

1080p cards: AMD 5850 ~$220 gtx 660 ~$220 gtx 650Ti boost ($ 180), gtx570 ~$250. AMD 7950 ~$220, 7970 (~$280, renamed to amd 280X sold at $300)This was all years ago.

300$ for a 1080p cards years later is a highway robbery.

PS. My next card (after 1070 that I payed eur 180 for) is going to be 1080ti for ~eur 240 (a year from now when 1660Ti becomes eur ~200 and amd 5700xt ~eur 280) This is because I have another 1070 sitting on my shelf was 180eur also, I can SLi those cards. I am NOT paying nVidia premium for 1080p cards.

PS1: hell I have few dozen rx570 sapphire nitro cards, I can CF those. You can get 570/580 for a 100eur a pop. Why pay anyone 300 for less performance than that? People around me are buying rx580 8gb cards left and right. No one is crazy enough or rich enough to pay 300 for 1660 or 370 for 2060 for fuck sake.

Tom(05:47 PM CET - Jan,04 2020 )
Oh trust me, I'm going as long as I possibly can with what I got. I ain't paying over $350 for a video card, and to be honest, never have. I don't need a million fps. I'm not one of those people. I don't care about 4K and beyond.
