GOG Lays Off 10% Of Their Staff - briefly
(hx) 09:21 AM CET - Feb,27 2019 - Post a comment / read (8)
When it comes to discount gaming, particularly that of a non-DRM nature, GOG is one of the best retail websites around. Having recently celebrated their 10th Birthday, many would have considered that the company was doing well and the future, at least, looked reasonably decent. It seems, however, that they might be having a few difficulties balancing the books. According to an unnamed source close to GOG, they have confirmed that for the last few months the company has been “dangerously close to being in the red”. To add a little less drama to the situation, however, 10% of the staff will only mean around 12 staff members will have to leave. That will, however, be of little comfort to anyone in that 10%. While confirming the necessary redundancies, GOG has said: "We have been rearranging certain teams since October 2018. Effecting in closing around a dozen of positions last week. At the same time, since the process started we have welcomed nearly twice as many new team members, and currently, hold 20 open positions." An unnamed employee has possibly shed some light on the decision. The person has said that this February has been bad on an unprecedented scale. Is GOG suffering from market suffocation?

In very related news, GOG has announced an end to its Fair Price Package program. GOG says it used the program to make up the price differences between various countries as some games on GOG.com have regional pricing. Those games cost more due to regional pricing and GOG was giving their customers GOG Wallet funds to make up the difference. In some instances, GOG was absorbing up to 37% of added cost. GOG says it was able to cover these costs by turning a small profit, but recent changes to the percentage of revenue split that it gives developers would mean that the digital game storefront would be operating at a loss. The Fair Price Package will end on March 31, 2019.

GOG deserves every penny.
They've done move good in the gaming industry over the course of the last few years than most software companies over the decade.
Hence, I feel really bad for that 10%.
But yes, this is the world we live in.
If you do good, honest job, you won't make money; you have to cheat and lie to prosper.
I am grateful GOG did not take that shortcut yet.

How many games did I buy from GOG? 0. Valve cheats and lies all the time. Yep of course they do. It's how they got to the top everyone.

Upper management probably spent all the company money on maintaining their pristine vintage computer collection.

Are they being active enough with exclusives? If a GoG title is simultaneously released across Steam, are they giving us a good enough reason to pick GoG? Do they need a new, creative PR department? Is Valve slowly swallowing us whole? Is Dark Seed a very scary game that deserves a remaster and should be sold on GoG? Yes. Is there any point to my rambling? Momentary textual relief. There, I did it. I used the T word.
