Microsoft Is Replacing Edge in Windows 10 - tech
(hx) 01:00 PM CET - Dec,16 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • AMD Outselling Intel 2 to 1 in November - AMD seems to be picking up steam over Intel's previous sky-high dominance of the desktop CPU market (Intel still dominates aplenty, really; but AMD has been clawing back market percentage monthly). The latest figures from the German retailer show shoppers taking advantage of AMD's newfound competitiveness in the CPU space, with increasing sales momentum starting on June 2018 up to a staggering 69% total AMD units sold against Intel's 31% during the month of November. All in all, this equates to around 16,000 CPUs sold by AMD just last month - and represents an almost twofold increase in total number of AMD processors moved YoY by the retailer. Intel's ASP may be much higher than AMD's right now, which helps the company close the gap in earnings to a mere 12% difference, but the latter is likely betting on the greater perceived longevity of its AM4 platform to bring more consumers to their side of the field via a market penetration strategy. It's all about rebuilding the competitiveness image at this time - while racking in a steady profit from AMD's smart choices in processor design. A national European market does not a global one make, of course - and while it may be a little over the edge to extrapolate this to the entire market, one thing is for sure: AMD is gaining market share.
  • AMD Ryzen and Radeon 3000 Series Leaks Discussed - AdoredTV has released a new video entitled "Ryzen 3000, Radeon 3000 Series LEAKS - It's Game On!" where he compares his trusted source of leaks to the "fake" leaks that were posted recently.
  • Microsoft Claims the iPad "Isn't a Real Computer" - Microsoft released a holiday ad earlier this week promoting its new, lower-cost Surface Go lineup, and while it's a cute video, some are saying the company has embarrassed itself by directly namedropping the competition: the ad features a little girl who explicitly tells her Grandma she doesn't want an iPad because it isn't "a real computer."
  • Microsoft Admits Manual Windows Updates Can Make You A Test Guinea Pig - In a new post on its Windows Blog, Microsoft details its Windows Update mechanism, allowing us to peer inside the company process to see how those precious updates are rolled out. While some Windows updates have clearly not gone according to plan, the vast majority do, and given the complexity and reach of these updates, it's actually surprising we don't see even more issues than we do. According to Microsoft, it delivers updates to about one thousand devices per second, ultimately topping one billion devices per month. That's not only Windows 10, but every version if Windows that Microsoft still supports - even where that support seems unlikely. Windows XP is tied in with these numbers, since some companies have opted for continued support with that now-ancient OS.
  • Microsoft Revamping Its IntelliMouse With Improved Sensor - Microsoft has apparently taken its IntelliMouse through an upgrade process. One of the more recognizable products harking back to Microsoft's past, the revamped IntelliMouse keeps its form, but sees the inclusion of an improved PixArt PAW 3389 Pro-MS sensor. The PixArt PAW 3389 features 50 levels of DPI sensitivity, running from a base 200 up to 16,000. The 136 g IntelliMouse is being rated for accelerations up to 50G, and a maximum polling rate of 1,000 Hz; it's of the wired variety, and features a small RGB detail on the palm rest, near the back of the mouse. For now, it's only available in the Chinese Microsoft store (where it's available for 400 Yuan, roughly 50 euro, but it should eventually find its way to other markets.
  • Microsoft Is Readying a Consumer Microsoft 365 Subscription Bundle - As part of its cloud strategy, Redmond offers a subscription bundle called Microsoft 365, which packages Windows 10, Office 365, and Enterprise Mobility + Security (a device management suite) for business and enterprise environments. ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley has learned Microsoft is planning something similar for consumers, which could include "some variant of Windows 10, Office 365 Home, Skype, Cortana, Bing, Outlook Mobile, Microsoft To-Do, and maybe MSN apps and services." Some believe Microsoft has telegraphed their intention to make Windows a subscription product in the future.
  • Microsoft Is Replacing Edge in Windows 10 with Anaheim browser - According to a report from Windows Central, Microsoft is giving up on its Edge browser and is switching to a Chromium-based web browser code named "Anaheim." This browser will replace Edge as the default browser on Windows 10.
  • Google Project Stream Participants Get Free PC Copy of Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Sign-ups are currently underway for Google’s Project Stream tech test, which features a fully playable version of Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Ubisoft has announced that those who are accepted will also get a free PC copy of the game linked to their Uplay account. The test, which was developed by Google to check the performance and viability of streaming a AAA video game, concludes January 15
  • Apple Turns Its Back on Customers and NVIDIA with macOS Mojave - Mac users who prefer NVIDIA cards are calling on Apple to relinquish their iron grip on green team’s drivers and what GPUs are supported. The company’s latest OS, macOS 10.14 Mojave, reduced official support to just two cards, the Quadro K5000 and GeForce GTX 680, but that’s just part of the problem: "NVIDIA currently cannot release a driver unless it is approved by Apple," so users encountering problems must wait even longer for a solution.
  • Apple Makes iOS 12.1.1 Available with Broader eSIM Support - Apple today released iOS 12.1.1, an update for iPhones and iPads that introduces a handful of new features. To start, iOS 12.1.1 brings dual SIM support, via eSIM, to more carriers for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. The XR gains haptic vibrations for notification previews. The update reinstates the ability to flip between the rear and front-facing cameras during a FaceTime call with a single button tap. The software makes it possible to capture Live Photos during one-to-one FaceTime calls, as well as take advantage of real-time text when using WiFi calling on the iPad. Apple News gives iPad users the option to hide the sidebar when in landscape orientation. As to be expected, a number bug fixes are included in iOS 12.1.1. For example, it makes stability improvements to dictation when using VoiceOver, fixes a Face ID reliability problem, addresses a visual voicemail glitch, and resolves an issue in Messages that sometimes prevented predictive text suggestions when typing in Chinese or Japanese. Other fixes tackle a problem that prevented Voice Memos from backing up to iCloud and a bug that prevented time zones from updating automatically. iOS 12.1.1 is free to download over the air.
  • Apple faces lawsuit claiming it hid the iPhone XS notch - The lawsuit, which was filed in the Northern District of California on Friday, seeks to prevent Apple from continuing this practice and wants everyone who bought an iPhone X, XS or XS Max to receive compensation. The main focus of the lawsuit is on the concealed notch, which is claimed that its plaintiff Courtney Davis was tricked by.  Images that disguise the missing pixels on the products' screens are prominent on the Defendant's website, as well as in the advertisements of retailers who sell the products, the complaint reads. "These images were relied on by Plaintiff DAVIS, who believed that the iPhone XS and XS Max would not have a notch at the top of the phone."  The notch also plays into the bigger picture, or smaller as it may be. According to the lawsuit, the iPhone X screen is "only about 5.6865 inches" due to the rounded corners, which is slightly smaller than Apple's rated 5.8 inches. Because of the rounded corners and notch, the lawsuit claims that the real resolution of the device is 2195 x 1125, which is about 10% less than Apple says it is. Apparently, those pixels are 'fake' pixels too. LCD screens typically use three subpixels (red, green and blue) in a striped configuration, and it uses them in various combinations to produce a single color for that pixel. The Samsung OLEDs that Apple happens to use utilize a "pentile" structure where five subpixels are arranged in a diamond shape.
  • Apple Says It Will Update iPhones to Circumvent China Ban - Apple plans to issue a software patch to its iPhones to appease Qualcomm and Chinese authorities. Earlier this week, a Chinese court found Apple to be in violation of two Qualcomm patents pertaining to resizing pictures and managing apps with a touch screen. The court issued a ban against Apple, blocking it from importing a range of phones into China. Though Apple is appealing that decision, it claims it can mitigate the issue via software. "Based on the iPhone models we offer today in China, we believe we are in compliance," said Apple in a statement provided to Reuters. Even so, the company went on to say, "Early next week we will deliver a software update for iPhone users in China addressing the minor functionality of the two patents at issue in the case." Apple didn't provide details concerning how the update will resolve the issue. As part of its appeal to the Chinese court, Apple said any ban would impact Chinese suppliers, Chinese consumers, and tax revenue it pays to Chinese authorities. Though the ruling called for an immediate ban, Apple's devices still remain available for sale in China. The patent spat between Apple and Qualcomm is part of a global battle over patent licensing practices and royalty payments.
  • Apple to Invest $1B In Austin and Hire Thousands Around the US - Apple today announced plans to build a new campus in Austin and expand its presence in a wide range of other markets with new hires. The company will invest $1 billion in the Austin campus, which entails a 133-acre site capable of handling up to 15,000 employees. Apple claims that once the Austin site is fully staffed, it will make Apple the largest private employer in Texas. The Austin campus will include engineering, R&D, operations, finance, sales, and customer support jobs. Apple already has 6,200 employees at its existing Austin facility
  • The Apple Watch ECG App & Other Health Monitoring Assistants Are - Apple has been granted De Novo classification by the FDA for the Apple Watch Series 4. This certification as a unique device allows Apple Watch customers running watchOS 5.1.2 access to features that enable the detection of irregular heart rhythms. Consumers will be notified when the PPG-enabled algorithm detects an irregular heartbeat. The electrical heart sensor, in conjunction with the companion ECG app, generates an ECG similar to a single-lead (Lead I) ECG to look for the presence of atrial fibrillation (AF) with a greater than 98% sensitivity and 99% specificity when compared to reference ECG devices. The device can distinguish between a normal heartbeat, or sinus rhythm, and atrial fibrillation. Other features of the Apple Watch Series 4 include access to Medical ID and fall detection.
  • Facebook Says Bug May Have Exposed Photos of 6.8M Users - Facebook today revealed that an issue might have given third-party apps access to users' unshared photos. The bug involved the photo API (something developers use) and Facebook login for third-party apps. Typically, Facebook only allows developers to see apps that are posted publicly. This issue made unshared photos, such as those left dangling in unpublished posts, exposed. Facebook fixed the issue, but says some 1,500 apps built by 876 developers could have viewed the photos of up to 6.8 million users between September 13 and September 25, 2018. Facebook apologized for the breach and said it will be giving developers tools next week to help them determine which people might be impacted. Facebook said it will alert those whose photos may have been improperly exposed. Facebook recommends users log into the apps they've granted photo access to see what photos might be involved.
  • Opera Browser for Android Adds Crypto Wallet and Web 3 - Opera Software today launched a new version of its Opera browser for Android devices that takes a step toward the internet's future. The latest build of Opera, based on blockchain, now includes an integrated crypto wallet and Web 3 support. By adding blockchain to the browser, Opera works with Ethereum, a blockchain-based coin for Web 3 transactions. Android device owners can get started by downloading Opera, then purchasing some Ethereum cryptocurrency and storing it in Opera's crypto wallet. This will allow people to make Web 3 purchases directly from Opera. This is important because Web 3 is based on the idea of decentralization. Distributed apps (Dapps) are what's used in Web 3 and the only way to manage transactions in Dapps is via cryptocurrency. The benefit is that people have far greater control over their privacy and identity. Opera knows that consumer understanding of blockchain and cryptocurrency needs a boost. "Until now, using cryptocurrencies online and accessing Web 3 required special apps or extensions, making it difficult for people to even try it out," said Charles Hamel, Product Manager of Opera Crypto. By adding a crypto wallet and Web 3 to its browser, Opera's goal is to "accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users' daily lives." Opera is free to download from the Google Play Store.

  • Astronauts are Inspecting the ISS's Air Leak Right Now - Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Sergey Prokopyev headed outside the International Space Station on Tuesday to cut away thermal and orbital debris shielding from a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and inspect the ship's hull, where the station crew repaired a minor air leak in August... The inspection planned on Tuesday's spacewalk will include photo documentation of the site, and the collection of samples from any epoxy sealant that may be seeped through the hole to the outside of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft, before the capsule undocks Dec. 19 with Prokopyev, outgoing station commander Alexander Gerst, and NASA astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor.
  • Samsung's Galaxy A8s is the first phone with a hole - The Samsung Galaxy A8s debuted in China this morning, even though almost everything about the phone had already been revealed, largely by Samsung's own doing. The phone features a Snapdragon 710 processor, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage expandable via microSD, and is expected to land at about $450. Choosing an IPS display over one of Samsung's own brilliant OLEDs would be disappointing - if not for that intriguing camera cut-out. Pinhole. Black hole. Polka dot. Pimple. Mole
  • Nvidia Hardware Powers an Underwater Drone - Using a 7.5W Nvidia Jetson TX2, the startup has created an underwater drone that can operate autonomously. "iBubble" can follow divers around, film them or their surroundings, and be remotely ordered around via a remote control. On their site, Nvidia claims the drone uses data from camera feeds to avoid obstacles, follow routes, and more.

  • SpaceX Breaks Records With Falcon 9 Launch - The fairing catch attempt Monday was the first in more than four months by SpaceX, but Mr. Steven missed the fairing halves, despite the installation of a bigger net earlier this year, and several apparent practice runs in recent weeks using test hardware dropped from a helicopter. Musk tweeted after Monday's launch that the fairing halves will be retrieved from the sea, dried and used again. But it's not clear how easy it will be to refurbish fairings after dropping into salt water. The method of catching the fairings using a net was intended to keep the shrouds away from the corrosive effects of sea water, a problem that lengthens the time needed for SpaceX to refurbish Dragon cargo capsules for reuse after splashing down in the ocean.
  • JPL Uploads The Sound of Wind on Mars -NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory just uploaded processed sensor recordings of "wind" on Mars. The vibrations from InSight's seismometer are very low frequency, but are still audible without having to be sped up, which makes them a great bass test for your PC. NASA also uploaded the raw sounds to SoundCloud, and claims uncompressed .wav files will be available on their site soon.
  • Scientists Develop 10-Minute Universal Cancer Test - Researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia have figured out a way to detect traces of cancer in a patient's bloodstream with a 'cheap and simple' test that utilizes "a colour-changing fluid to reveal the presence of malignant cells anywhere in the body and provides results in less than 10 minutes." The caveat is that it "does not reveal where or how serious it is."

What I don't get is why MS is so intent on having its own browser. With all of the other quality issues at MS, Windows 10 should be job 1, 2, and 3 at this point. Just install Chrome, let the devil keep spying on us, and move along. It's almost like MS wants desperately to get out of making real software and just switch to the easy world of apps (applets) vs applications.

We are on the verge of converting the world to limited task computing, to match attention spans...a "proper" browser fits that plug and play model much better. Look how Apple is deprecating Mac OS in favor of iOS; Chromebook ascendancy; even Android expanding to the desktop (DEX). Soon Windows and classic Office will be buried in the bowels of the enterprise just like COBOL suffered a slow inexorable death.

Maybe Apple is right on target with its "What is a computer?" campaign.

gx-x(03:05 AM CET - Dec,17 2018 )
if you look at the chart carefully, AMD is outselling intel in class of pentium and i3 CPUs. The next level is a class that would compete with i5 2500. Massive advance for AMD, but pathetic in general really. Waiting for Ryzen 2.
