TechNews - 28-Hour Laptop Battery Life - tech
(hx) 08:14 PM CEST - Jun,16 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Intel Readying 22-core LGA2066 and 8-core LGA1151 Processors - Intel is readying a refresh to its "Basin Falls" HEDT platform (LGA2066 client high-end desktop), with a new 22-core silicon. This part is neither Skylake HCC (20 tiles, up to 18 cores) nor Skylake XCC (30 tiles, up to 28 cores), but a new die with four more tiles than the Skylake HCC silicon, all of which are cores. The new silicon could let Intel design 20-core and 22-core SKUs for the X299 Express chipset, and is seen as a direct response to AMD's 24-core Ryzen Threadripper II processor, which was recently shown beating the 18-core i9-7980X in tech demos. The 32-core Threadripper II could face competition from the 28-core HEDT processor Intel is readying for Q4-2018, but that processor won't be compatible with LGA2066.
  • Intel CPUs have another bug that can leak sensitive information - Security researchers have discovered a vulnerability affecting all modern Intel Core and Xeon processors, which is an exploit of a performance optimization feature called "lazy FP state restore," which can be exploited to sniff out sensitive information, including cryptographic keys used to protect sensitive data. The flaw affects all x86 micro-architectures by Intel, "Sandy Bridge" and later. The "lazy FP state restore" feature is a set of commands used to temporarily store or restore the FPU states of applications running "lazily" (as opposed to "eagerly"). Red Hat put out an advisory stating that numbers held in FPU registers could be used to access sensitive information about the activities of other applications, including encryption keys. Intel began working with popular OS vendors to quickly roll out software patches against the vulnerability.
  • Intel Teases 28-Hour Laptop Battery Life Using One-Watt Display - At the conference, Intel said they were working on a new Low Power Display Technology that combined more efficient energy use with lower power consumption to increase the battery life of a 13-inch display. For some devices, that could lead to a battery that lasts longer than a full day. "The display consumes the most battery in a device, and one way we're working to enable all-day battery life is by co-engineering the new Intel Low Power Display Technology, featured in a one watt panel manufactured by Sharp and Innolux, which can cut LCD power consumption by half," Gregory Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group at Intel, said in a press release. "Through continued innovation with the industry, we expect to deliver an additional four to eight hours of local video playback - that means battery life could be up to 28 hours on some devices."  In a presentation at the conference, Intel played a time-lapse video showing the laptop operating for 25 hours. Bryant also added that changes in hardware and new Intel GPU software allow for the lower battery power use. According to the release, lighting up the screen is the most energy-consuming task laptops perform, and their system takes measures to address this while keeping screen brightness relatively high. With the help of Sharp and Innolux, their new screens use half of the energy they used to.
  • Acer Predator X27 4K G-Sync Display is Loud and Cheap - For a two thousand dollar monitor those are all flaws that are unacceptable. The fan was louder than my computer, and I think I have ten fans in my computer!
  • Phase-Change Cooler & Novec Cooling  - These techniques are as old as overclocking CPUs are. However, putting these things together in a commercially available system is something extremely new!
  • Microsoft releases Windows 10 Redstone 5 Build 17686 -Microsoft continues to roll out new Windows 10 RS5 builds on a weekly basis. Build 17686 is available to Fast ring Insiders and those who have opted to Skip Ahead. This build includes some privacy improvements, better localized settings, and updates for Windows Mixed Reality. It also includes a number of improvements, fixes, and known issues.
  • Windows 10 Build 17692 Improvements - This new preview is a significant release with a number of features and improvements that are expected to arrive with the Redstone 5 development later in 2018. Windows 10 build 17692, according to the company brings its SwiftKey touch-keyboard technology, delivers several improvements for Easy of Access, Game Bar, Game Mode, Search, Windows Mixed Reality, and Microsoft Edge adds new autoplay controls.
  • Synology Releases Active Backup for Office 365 and Business - Synology today released two major backup applications in Active Backup suite of packages, the official version of Active Backup for Office 365 that supports SaaS cloud backup, and the beta version of Active Backup for Business that provides data availability for workloads in physical and virtual environments.
  • Microsoft HoloLens 2 Tipped For Q1 2019 Launch - The rumor claims that the new HoloLens is going to arrive in Q1 2019. This is interesting in part because Microsoft reportedly stopped developing the V2 of the HoloLens and was instead moving directly to a more groundbreaking "V3" device. It was said at the time that the new HoloLens would by an augmented reality device. Thurrott reports that it has seen documents that claim the new headset will be lighter, more comfortable, and have improved holographic displays. The big win for Microsoft and anyone who has been on the fence about getting the current HoloLens is that the new version is tipped to cost significantly less than the current version.
  • Google Brings Offline Neural Machine Translations to Mobile - Google today made its neural machine translation (NMT) technology available to Google Translate even when mobile devices are offline. Google says NMT will run on Android and iOS phones in Google Translate, powering accurate translations when there's no internet connection. NMT translates text entire sentences at once, rather than word by word or phrase by phrase. This means translations sound more like they would if spoken by a real person. This is particularly helpful with longer sections of text, such as paragraphs or articles. Users will need to download the specific language pack they want/need to their device in order to access offline NMT. Most languages are between 35 MB and 45 MB, so they don't take up too much space. Google Translate is adding offline NMT support for 59 languages around the world over the next few days, with more in the works.
  • This AI Can Clone Any Voice, Including Yours - Bloomberg sends journalist Ashlee Vance to Canada to visit with the founders of Lyrebird, who have created an AI that can "clone human voices with frightening precision."
  • Google Releases Android P Beta 2 with Final APIs -Google today made Android P Beta 2 available to developers. Importantly, Google says this beta includes the final Android P APIs (level 28) and the official SDK, which means developers have what they need to customize their apps for the new features in Android P. Google says those who've already enrolled in the beta program will automatically get Android P Beta 2 over the next day or so. Android P includes features such as Adaptive Battery for smarter power consumption; App Actions, which rely on machine learning so apps are more engaging with users; Slices, which surface rich content in places like Google Search and Assistant; and new controls for notch-style displays. The beta so packs 157 new emoji. In addition to Google's own Pixel and Nexus phones, several other devices from OnePlus, Sony, and others will have access to the Android P Beta 2. Google expects to roll out the final version of Android P later this summer.
  • "Glitch" Allows A Google Search Request to Show Your Text Messages - In a report from PhoneArena, a Reddit user noticed that when he accidentally typed an extra period into a google search for "the1975..com" instead of a search result, he received a page showing his text messages. The same page that appears if you asked Google to "show me my text messages." Another user noted that searching for "zela viagens" will trigger the same result. Interesting find. Of course what this also means is Google is likely spying on your text messages as well. Fortunately PhoneArena notes in the article, that if you remove SMS permissions from the Google app, the Google can no longer spy on your texts.
  • VPNFilter Router Malware is a Lot Worse Than Everyone Thought - A couple of weeks ago I reported about a Russian malware (VPNFilter) that was infecting a large number or routers from different vendors. This week I have bad news to report because this malware is far more widespread than originally thought. More vendors have been added to the vulnerable list and additional models from already named vendors have been added as well. Take a look at the source and you'll be able to see if your router is vulnerable. The researchers believe the criminals controlling VPNFilter are profiling endpoints to pick out the best targets, and will swipe confidential information in transit where possible. The code snoops on the destination IP address, to help it identify valuable traffic such as a connection to a bank, as well as visited domain names. It also attempts to downgrade secure HTTPS connections to unencrypted forms, so that login passwords and the like can be obtained.
  • Apple Will Lock iPhone Lightning Port to Protect Users from Law - Apple today said it will change the behavior of iPhones in order to protect its users. The company plans to alter its software to lock the Lightning port of iOS devices that are not used for an hour. The function, called USB Restricted Mode, prevents data transfer via USB, though the phone can still charge through a Lightning cable. The idea is to thwart law enforcement use of GrayShift and Cellebrite boxes, which are able to crack iOS security using a direct USB connection through the Lightning port. The devices work by disabling the number of times passwords/PINs can be guessed by the machine before the iPhone is locked or erased. "We're constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data," said Apple in a statement to Reuters. "We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don't design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs." The Lightning port will be re-enabled for data transfer once the owner enters their password, PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID. Apple primarily expects the feature to protect consumers "in countries where police seize phones at will." Researchers discovered USB Restricted Mode in beta builds of iOS 10.4 last month. Apple told Reuters that it will be added permanently to iOS in a future release.
  • Apple Says Apps Can't Be Used to Mine Cryptocurrency - Apple doesn't want iPhones and iPads to be used by developers to mine Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. The company recently updated its App Store guidelines with specific bans on mining. "Apps may not mine for cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device" such as in the cloud, said Apple. Some apps have hidden cryptocurrency mining in their background processes, using mobile and other devices to mine the currencies unbeknownst to device owners. This is now forbidden. Apple is still allowing apps to facilitate transactions or transmissions of cryptocurrency on an approved exchange, as well as facilitate Initial Coin Offerings as long as they come from established banks. Google has put a similar cryptocurrency mining ban in place in its Chrome Web Store.
  • Snapchat's 'Clear Chats' Tool Lets You Unsend Messages - Snapchat is rolling out a new feature over the next few weeks that will allow people to unsend messages. The tool, called Clear Chats, lets users retract messages. Users wishing to delete a note will need to do so directly from the thread by pressing and holding the message they want to get rid of. The operation is not perfect. Snapchat says it will do what it can to retract messages, but it may not be able to if the recipient isn't connected to the internet or doesn't have the most recent version of the app installed. The recipient will be notified that they received a message and that it was retracted. The tool still doesn't protect against screen shots. Snapchat says it should reach all users globally soon.
  • Samsung Rounds Out Entry-Level Roster with Galaxy J7 and Galaxy J3 - Samsung has announced the Galaxy J7 and Galaxy J3, simple phones that offer basic functionality at affordable price points. Shared features include Android 8 Oreo, 2 GB of memory, 16 GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.2, and WiFi. The international configuration of these phones ship with Samsung Exynos processors on board, but U.S. versions will likely swap for Qualcomm processors.
  • Xiaomi Mi 8 in-depth Review - Xiaomi's Mi 8 is the Chinese phone company's flagship for 2018 and like every other handset's flagship it too will feature an edge-to-edge display broken only by a "notch" on its upper edge. But that's not the only similarity the Mi 8 bears to the iPhone X. It has a pair of cameras on its rear that are arranged vertically (both are 12 megapixel), and the front of the Explorer Edition of the phone features a 20MP camera equipped with infrared face unlocking technology (which sounds a lot like Apple's Face ID to us). Elsewhere, the phone is every bit the flagship Android device we'd expect in 2018. It's got Qualcomm's top of the line Snapdragon 845 chip, and a 6.21-inch AMOLED display. In terms of software, the phone will run Xiaomi's MIUI 10 skin on top of Android (which we've got our fingers crossed is version Oreo, but Xiaomi wasn't able to officially confirm this) and Xiaomi is also packing in its own Xiao Ai voice assistant.
  • Tesla Updates Autopilot Nag - Whiners Start Whining - Given all the bad press that Tesla has gotten lately from people using its not-so-aptly-named "Autopilot," and running into things, it is making some changes to the "Nag" system, as its users call it. Previously, the nag would only nag you every 5 minutes if under 45mph on a straight road, and 1 to 3 minutes over 45mph. With new updates being pushed out, you will be alerted every 15 to 20 seconds to keep you hands on the steering wheel, since of course "Autopilot" does not automatically pilot your car. Oh the horror of having the drive your car. Maybe if you don't want to drive, you should take an Uber? That said, all you have to do is actually touch the steering wheel, so don't worry, you still don't have to actually drive.

  • First Man - Official Trailer (HD) - On the heels of their six-time Academy Award-winning smash, La La Land, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling reteam for Universal Pictures' First Man, the riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost-on Armstrong and on the nation-of one of the most dangerous missions in history.

While the ultimate goal appears to be glasses-free 3D, this advancement will, at least, allow 3D films to look their best. The director also called Hollywood out for relying on post-conversion rather than shooting natively.

"Intel Teases 28-Hour Laptop Battery Life Using One-Watt Display"

That's actually news about 1W display, not battery life. Consider that most TVs in stand-by mode use over 2W...

Csimbi(08:33 PM CEST - Jun,18 2018 )
Meh. Use solar panel on case (keys, frame, display back, etc) and it'll last longer. Plus, you will be green(er).
