TechNews - Most Windows 10 PCs running v1709 - tech
(hx) 06:47 PM CET - Feb,24 2018 - Post a comment / read (18)
Microsoft is likely pleased with the updates adoption rate thus far. According to AdDuplex, an impressive 85 percent of PCs running Windows 10 have installed the Fall Creators Update. LOL, it's amazing the things you can accomplish when you FORCE change onto people!! If you have seen Windows.old folders which cannot be deleted without changing ownership/access rights. It's nice if you have workstation with 120GB SSD with few gigabytes free space...FYI, this week, the firm released new updates for PCs running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) and the Creators Update (version 1703). If you're on version 1703, you'll see KB4077528, or build 15063.936. You can manually download it here, and it contains the following fixes
  • World of Tanks enCore, Tested on 10 GPUs - Wargaming says it optimized its Core graphics engine for weaker configurations, and it only requires a dual-core CPU. Our results confirm the developer's assertions. Even with two physical cores enabled, the benchmark's frame rate remains excellent. Activating SMT helps improve our observed minimum frame rate, and there are no additional gains available beyond four physical cores.
  • 20 Multiplayer VR Games That Work Across Platforms - Virtual reality games are great fun, but with several platforms on the market, the communities for these games are often fractured and suffer from small installed bases. The best way to avoid a fractured community is to offer a way to bring everyone together. Here's a look at VR games that offer cross-platform gameplay in one form or another.
  • 5-Way Mech Keyboard Roundup - Chris over at Hot Hardware took the time to do a roundup review that covers five difference mechanical keyboards from Corsair, Azio, HyperX, Aukey, and Cherry.
  • Most Windows 10 PCs are now running the Fall Creators Update - Microsoft in October launched the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, delivering a bundle of small and medium-sized improvements to customers utilizing Microsoft’s latest operating system. If data from cross-promotion network AdDuplex is at all accurate, Microsoft is likely pleased with the update’s adoption rate thus far. According to AdDuplex, an impressive 85 percent of PCs running Windows 10 have installed the Fall Creators Update. In some countries like Canada, Germany and Finland, the update has a market share of over 90 percent although others such as China and India bring the global average down with adoption rates in the 60 percent range.
  • How To Disable Wi-Fi Sense In Windows 10 - Wi-Fi Sense is a feature in Windows 10 that saves you from the hassle of manually connecting your device to an open Wi-Fi hotspot and to those managed by your Facebook, Skype, and Outlook contacts. Wi-Fi Sense does this by sharing the secret passkeys that your contacts use to connect to the wireless networks, or by sharing your passkeys with your contacts to allow them to connect to your wireless network. Although Wi-Fi Sense is enabled in Windows 10 by default in an effort to provide a hassle-free experience, using the feature could also be a security concern.
  • Google's ARCore 1.0 Released to Public, Google Lens Hits More - Google today made ARCore 1.0 available to developers and the public, bringing augmented reality to some 100 million smartphones around the world. Handsets compatible with ARCore include Google's Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL; Samsung's Galaxy S8, S8+, Note8, S7, and S7 edge; LGE's V30 and V30+; Asus's Zenfone AR; and OnePlus's OnePlus 5. More devices from Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Asus, Xiaomi, HMD/Nokia, ZTE, Sony Mobile, and Vivo will be compatible with ARCore later this year
  • Google disclosed Microsoft Edge security flaw before it's fixed - The vulnerability reportedly relates to how Edge handles code execution and was first disclosed to Microsoft by Google back in November. After giving the software giant 90 days to fix the issue, Project Zero researchers have gone public with their findings. Though the specifics of the discovery are complicated and quite technical, the gist is hackers are able to bypass Microsoft Edge's existing security measures to inject malicious code into a victim's PC memory, according to Neowin. With this in mind, it's not hard to see why Project Zero awarded the flaw a "Medium" severity rating. As of writing, Microsoft has not rolled out a fix for the vulnerability so security conscious users may wish to use an alternate browser for the time being.
  • Samsung Halts Galaxy S8 Oreo Update Due to Reboot Bug - Samsung has pulled the Android 8 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 after users reported random reboots. "Following a limited number of cases where Galaxy S8 and S8+ devices have rebooted unexpectedly with the Android 8.0 Oreo, we have temporarily stopped the rollout of the update," said Samsung in a statement provided to SamMobile. "We are investigating the issue internally to ensure that the impact to the affected devices is minimized and the rollout of the update can resume as quickly as possible." Samsung has been rolling out Android 8 slowly over the last few weeks, mostly in European markets. The update had not yet reached the S8 and S8+ in the U.S. Samsung did not say when it expects the make the update available again.
  • Samsung Max Offers Data Savings and Security for Android - Samsung has announced Samsung Max, a free app for Android devices that will provide new data conservation and security tools. The app, a reborn version of the former Opera Max app, includes Data Saving Mode to help people stretch their mobile data buckets a bit further each month. The app can monitor which apps are using data and alert users to apps that consume too much. It also helps by actively compressing images, videos, music files, and web pages within apps and the browser to keep data consumption down. People can fine-tune how Data Saving Mode polices other apps in the advanced settings tools. On the security front, Samsung Max includes Privacy Protection Mode, a VPN for securing phones when on WiFi. It encrypts WiFi traffic with a single tap, blocks trackers and cookies, and includes a Domain Name System masking service to hide the user's location. Samsung says Samsung Max will reach the Google Play Store on February 23. The company will also preinstall it on some devices later this year.
  • New Samsung S9 Video Ad Reveals More Details - Between the three video advertisements, Samsung teases the abilities of the upcoming phone, without ever showing the actual phone. It's obvious that Samsung is trying to hint at the abilities of the camera on the Galaxy S9, as seen with the motif of the round hole in the '9' at the end of each video resembling the view through a round lens. What do you think?
  • Apple Puts Its Foot Down, Will Require Apps Support iPhone X - Apple today told developers that soon all new apps submitted to the iTunes App Store must support the screen of the latest iPhone. "Starting April 2018, all new iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 11 SDK, included in Xcode 9 or later," said Apple in an email to developers. "All new apps for iPhone, including universal apps, must support the Super Retina display of iPhone X." The iPhone X display swaps the 16:9 aspect ratio found on the iPhone 6, 7, and 8 for a 2:1 aspect ratio with a notch at the top. It also boosts the resolution beyond full HD. Apps that haven't yet been updated for the iPhone X often have black bars at the top and bottom, which look unsightly. Developers can find the iOS 11 SDK on Apple's developer web site.
  • Apple Prepping Fix for Message Bug that Crashes iPhones  - Apple says it has a patch in the works that will counter a bug causing iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and even Macs to crash. The bug occurs when people receive a message with certain Indian language characters in apps including iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. According to The Verge, Apple will push the patch "soon." This means the bug will be fixed through a minor update (iOS 11.2.x) rather than the larger iOS 11.3 update expected later this spring. Apple also plans to issue patches for macOS and watchOS to resolve the issue on those devices
  • How iFixit Became the World's Best iPhone Teardown Team - The most important thing that happens when a new iPhone comes out is not the release of the phone, but the disassembly of it!
  • Phones At Apple Repair Center Are Calling 911 Multiple Times a Day - CBS Sacramento is reporting that phones located at an Apple repair center in Elk Grove California have been calling 911. The Elk Grove police states that they receive on average, 20 accidental 911 calls a day from the repair center, and roughly 1,600 calls since October. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Communication Center is also getting these calls, 47 since January.
  • Qualcomm Drops 802.11ax WiFi Modem with WPA3 Security for Phones - Qualcomm today announced the WCN3998, a pre-standard 802.11ax WiFi radio for smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. Qualcomm says the WCN3998 is faster, more power efficient, and more secure than previous designs. To start, the 802.11ax spec allows for more throughput for each user, thanks to 8x8 MU-MIMO, even on congested access points. This ensures that end users see an increase of speeds by a factor of two. Moreover, the WCN3998 puts strict power management algorithms to work in order to reduce power consumption by up to 67%. The WiFi radio is among the first to adopt WPA3 encryption from the WiFi Alliance. WPA3 provides a much greater degree of security on home, public, and enterprise networks, and can even protect those who fail to pick strong passwords. Last, the WCN3998 adopts Bluetooth 5.1 with extended data rate and low energy mode. This makes for more robust wireless audio connections and battery life improvements of up to 75%. Qualcomm says the WCN3998 supports pre-draft access points that it expects to reach the market later this year and early next year. The WiFi radio will find its way into flagship smartphones by the end of 2018.
  • Blu Vivo X Boasts 4 Cameras, 6-Inch 18:9 Display - Blu Products today announced the Vivo X, a flagship handset that costs less than $200. The phone is among the first from Blu to jump to the 18:9 aspect ratio for its 6-inch 1440 by 720p display. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. A MediaTek Helio P25 processor powers the phone with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The Vivo X features two sets of dual cameras. A 13-megapixel main camera adorns the rear of the phone with LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, and full HD video capture. The secondary camera has a 5-megapixel sensor. Together, they can produce bokeh-style images. On the front, the Vivo X features a 20-megapixel standard-angle camera with user-facing LED flash, f/2.0 aperture, and face unlock, and an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera. Other features include a 4,010mAh battery with rapid charging, fingerprint reader, MaxxAudio speakers, dual SIM card support, Bluetooth 4.1, WiFi, GPS, and support for GSM networks in the U.S. It runs Android 7 Nougat. Blu is selling the Vivo X unlocked from its own web site as well as Amazon for $199
  • New Crypto Payment System Available - Even though many vendors (Microsoft, Steam, others) have stopped taking crypto as payment for goods and services this isn't stopping Coinbase from offering a new service that lets vendors take crypto as payment. They call it Coinbase Commerce and they are offering it up to merchants all around the world. Whether or not this brings more merchants back into the fold is anyone's guess, but if it works as easily as Coinbase says it does then I bet some merchants take another look at this. In my opinion, it's just as important to get crypto out there as a purchasing device as it is to be an investment vehicle. Until crypto is used more often it's only going to be a novelty.

Are you seriously trying to tell me you dont know how to get rid of windows.old? Wow LMAO

Ownership rights? Holy fuck theres a built in function in disk cleanup you morons.

There is zero wrong with creators update. Still original install here with windows and not a fucking problem. Its just fucking idiot n00bs who bitch and whine because they're so brain dead.

Kept a screenshot for posterity. LoL

All you n00bs should consider this...

Fuck MS and Windows 10.
If it ain't my choice, it ain't happening.
Besides, I have no need for it, like most of the world.
You know, there are activists that achieved banning force-feeding ducks.
How come nobody can stop MS from force-feeding human beings?

Tom> Are you seriously trying to tell me you dont know how to get rid of windows.old? Wow LMAO

Tom, you have 1 PC with Windows home at your home right?

I administrate over 1500 PC (various Windows Domains and evironments). May surprise you that disk clean up doesnt work in most cases.

I have seen many completely crashed Windows 10 computers as Windows Update simply destroyed them. Even Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2016 versions. And it's not just me.

Besides these new Windows 10 builds corrupt 3rd party software. That's fun which cost lost of money and time. Upgrade cycle 6 months is just crazy.

You probably live in different reality than me. In my case Windows 10 for dumbs books are just not enough to solve serious problems.

Sure, for gaming at home, Windows 10 are quite OK, if you have a new hardware. I have no problem with that.

Here's is very nice link just for Tom :D

Well said heretic. My Company does have about 25.000 employees, all over the place and with win, mac, linux. Win 8.1 on my Dell E7250 was ugly, but never just shut down like Win10. Funny enough it must have to do with our internal network, since it does not do that when I'm working from home. So I guess this is 50% MS and 50% Client Engineerings fault. Glad I have my linux, which other than win or mac, just works for me. Ok I'm a programmer / admin, not a sales guy or designer, but both win and mac suck in their own type of field. Win10 is a fail from my perspective, although it does do a lot of things right for the end-user, it is a pain in the ass for business users.

Whos this Hx, your brother? Comng to help you? Whats a matter csimbi and koogle not around?

I have 6 networked pcs in my house using a light linux ubuntu serving as the DC. I have 5 pc's in mymhouse on win 10. 2 home edition and 3 pro edition. The other PC is my main HTPC which is not full fledged gaming PC running Vista. I have No problems here on Creators pack. Gen 6, 7 and 8 cpus.

My company has over 3000 employees. Im sure 98% are on Win10. I've not heard of any problems. I help support at least in my office with anything Windows Mac Android Linux and Solaris. I also manage wifi access for my whole office.

In the past week I've shown people how to clean this shit up. However it is there for a reason. It's backup/fallback.It takes GB not TB.There is no obvious option for a user to clear it because it really doesnt need to be messed with. Most users in an office should also have no reason to delete windows.old. The problems people have after this patch is likely related to problems they left without fixing to begin with.

you come off poorly man. Spouting all this crap when your website is seriously lacking, running a free ancient PHPBB portal which has seen hackers and constant timeouts.

At least this answers my previous thoughts of what is going on herenin regards to bashing Windows. You are a standup guy thanks for being a man and finally standing up.

can confirm, disk cleanup, even going through it's advanced features failed to delete restore points created by creators update and some others. I wouldn't have even noticed those if I weren't on a 120GB ssd that suddenly lost ~40GB of space for no reason (until I discovered the reason and naturally tried the disk cleanup first and did "remove restore points" and all that jazz). Had to manually take ownership and delete the restore points. However, in my case, there was no "windows.old", just some hidden restore folder with those restore points.

OMG. Then you already cleaned it up post-creators pack dumb ass. The folder is created for everyone that goes to Creators pack, it allows you for ~10days if you change your mind and want to fallback. System Restore points can be cleaned in the same manner in Disk Cleanup or through System Protection. Hint. Type it in Start button. If it doesn't get rid of them, then your system is likely a hunk of shit. And I'd advise against just removing any directory. That is just stupid right there.

Who the fuck buys a system drive with only 120GB. 250GB is a minimum.

Ah, so you're that guy who bothered to write down the wifi password.

gx-x(08:15 PM CET - Feb,26 2018 )
I took it out of broken laptop, SSD was well and good (and free). Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten one at all. Past the boot time, there is no real benefit, none that I can see. But sure, go ahead, you are a rich fucker, buy 10 SSDs, I don't give a shit. You might have said something like "who the hell lives in a country that has average salary of 400$/month, you should only live in a country like mine, where you get at least 3000$/month and can throw money around on stupid shit like ssds, projectors, big size TVs)

Also, like I said, restore points were in a separate hidden folder, cleanup didn't even see it. And it was waaaay past 10 days. I got creators update in the first batch, last year, cleaned that mess up a month ago.

now please, continue to defend your stupid argument and add more insults.

Its not my fault you live in a shit country pal. You can get a 250GB SSD in Canada for < $100. I'm supposed to be a fucking mind reader and know you live in some poverty stricken country. LOL!

The number of employees does only have an impact on the own statistic feeling, nothing more. No reason to get upset Tom.

I bash Microsoft for bad decisions not Windows.

To wrap it up: my choice, your choice, nobody cares, as long as you are happy with your setup. Only thing I hope is that your social skills, hopefully do not represent your IT skills. :P

Well thanks for your quarterly visit. My social skills adapt to the person posting.

Just because you are not good/like something doesn't entitle you to bash it especially with stupid comments like yours. It's clearly obvious you are just a support for Hx, a friend.

And you have no idea what you are talking about. So how do you want me to address you? maybe this approach?

amra> but never just shut down like Win10.

In all the forums I post too/read I have never seen anyone fighting a problem of windows 10 just shutting down. Maybe you should check at work to make sure your cord is really plugged into your dock.

amra> it must have to do with our internal network

Uh huh.. Is that like a reverse-wake-on-lan kinda bug? instead of waking your pc it's turning it off? Hmm.

amra> So I guess this is 50% MS and 50% Client Engineerings fault

Amazing logic there. I'd say 80% client engineering.

amra> win and mac suck in their own type of field.

yes the statistics clearly show that, but how many run completely on linux? Hmmmm. I mean how many even game totally on linux? I like Linux, but there are too many shortcomings to have it as a daily driver.

amra(01:00 PM CET - Feb,28 2018 )
It is a pleasure sir to comment here once a quarter.

"Just because you are not good/like something doesn't entitle you to bash it especially with stupid comments like yours."

Ok, no problem. Good you absolutly do the same every time you post something here. Funny you now want me to stop the same behavior you show every time yourself.

"It's clearly obvious you are just a support for Hx, a friend. "

Oh sure, Sherlock! Great deduction!
