Windows 10 Blocking Counterfeit Games - briefly
(hx) 06:26 AM CEST - Aug,18 2015 - Post a comment / read (30)
Microsoft's new unified services agreement is freaking people out because it contains language that says Microsoft can scan Windows 10 devices for pirated software and block it. The clause can be found under section 7b, "Updates to the Services or Software, and Changes to These Terms." It reads:
We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices. You may also be required to update the software to continue using the Services
The clause would suggest that Microsoft will disable pirated first-party games. The EULA also mentions "unauthorized hardware peripheral devices," which is a much more fuzzy description. Is it controllers that have been specifically hacked to enable an unfair advantage, or something much broader?

The services agreement covers Windows 10, Windows Phone, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Published on 4 June 2015, the agreement came into force on 1 August.

Company doesn't want you doing illegal things! This is "freaking people out"?

Got news for these people - there's a whole group of people dedicated to doing this too, they're called police! Look out for them.

Ahh come on that is NOT the same , now back to your scanning OS ;)

I've noticed that it also intercept underground networks like TOR, it's a pitty I was enthusiastic to try this new version. I'll keep my Windows 7 then....

All BS, my son has illegitimate games. Plays them all the time so whatever their claims are, they aren't active or work very well. Believe what you want, make a fool of yourself. Lots of fools here. Consoles have basically the same thing in their EULA. And who's whining? just cheap bastards who want to game but not pay for legitimate licenses.

Sony:
You agree that you will not use any unauthorized hardware, including peripherals not sold, licensed or certified by a Sony company such as non-licensed game enhancement devices, controllers, adaptors and power supply devices (collectively, "Non-Licensed Peripherals") or unauthorized software to access or use PSN First Party Services or any content or service provided on or through PSN First Party Services.

Nice argument Tom. Since when you can't afford something as cheap as games?

I can understand people like me, with 300$/month salary, pirating games and shit, but people like you?! And you lashing out like that? FFS Tom...

edit: I don't [u:fe79b24efc]hate[/u:fe79b24efc] you Tom, I just can't wrap my head around this...You are in a country that enforces laws very well, and you are taking a risk like that for something small like that...It's your business, I get it, I am just publicly confused :D

Tom(09:07 PM CEST - Aug,18 2015 )
The point of the article is that MS is sniffing for your pirated software. It's a trolling news story. I call BS #1, #2 consoles and other game devices already do the same and have for a long time. Whoever wrote the article is a troll who clearly knows jack shit.

I agree with you on that, that goes without saying (I am firewalling shit since forever, nothing goes online without my permission and unless they bury it under svchoosts (Service Host) that is needed to route internet they can shove it up their asses).
I was commenting on something else in your post...Forget it... ;)

Penetreitor> I've noticed that it also intercept underground networks like TOR, it's a pitty I was enthusiastic to try this new version. I'll keep my Windows 7 then....

TOR is routing your requests through a slew of proxies and other PCs on the network that use TOR. There is nothing "underground" about it. Windows still has to use it's services to send packets out, that's how shit works.

Tom(09:53 PM CEST - Aug,18 2015 )
gx-x, exactly. I'm not going to comment on your financial status.

Csimbi(10:05 PM CEST - Aug,18 2015 )
AFAIK, it applies to Xbox junkware only. Most of which are not worth playing anyhow.

The only concern I have with this is that it encourages piracy even more.
Why?
Because now pirates will need to use a pirate OS and on that pirate OS you will play only pirated games, nothing else.

Think oh Windows Live in games? Crackers simply removed it from the games and they worked fine. Can they remove it from the OS? I'm sure there will be a way, but most likely, not without borking the legitimate games so no more legitimate games.

Nah, they replace the dll that "reports home" with another one so game doesn't even know it is not reporting. Real W. Live will see installed game and it will figure that it's not activated. Worst case, you will leave W. Live disabled until you want to play a legitimate copy.
Pirated games don't support multiplayer so in any case you have to buy original game if you want MP. So if you want to play, say, battlefield you will have no use for a pirated game.

Oh and :

It turns out it is not true :)

Tom> The point of the article is that MS is sniffing for your pirated software. .

Exactly. Finally someone who understood the point :-)

MS Sniffing Key points:

-It sends all text you type anywhere (not just into search) every 30 minutes to MS. If you type about a holiday to your blog, next day youll see holiday ads.

- every 30 minutes it sends your geolocation and network info

-if you type a telephone number into Edge it sends it to MS after 5 min

-if you type anywhere in windows a name of some movie, windows will start indexing all your media files after a while and will send it to MS after 30 minutes of your inactivity

-after installing W10, it will send about 35MB of data once

-after turning on your webcam for the first time it sends data to microsoft once. Probably your photo.

-everything you say is transferred to MS, it works even if you disable and remove and uninstall Cortana. Parts of Cortana are needed for the core of the OS to run. Confirmed by MS helpdesk. You can be identified by your voice anywhere near a microphone after they get enough data from you.

-Voice to text is transferred instantly

-voice is transferred every 15 min, 80MB of data

-after 15 minutes of your inactivity or when screensaver is on, network activity ramps up and everything else is being sent to MS

-blocking in hosts doesnt work, some IPs are hardcoded into their code and DLLs

Wow
I wonder what the EU will have to say about this privacy-wise. They should ban this junk.

gx-x(03:14 PM CEST - Aug,19 2015 )
Since you can disable all that (it's part of the of "getting to know you" ) M$ will say it is optional and EU won't say anything, maybe they will force them to ship a version that has all of those disabled by default.

Here, a quick guide to those options:

to me it doesn't matter that it's non-identifying data, what matters is that it is taking I/O and CPU time in background to do something that I have no use for.

What about blocking in the router?

These DLLs can try all they want after that. :D

gx-x(08:07 PM CEST - Aug,19 2015 )
yea, if you know the IP they are trying to reach you can do it in router and in 3rd party firewall as well.

I guess it will be just a matter of editing the hosts file.

Then you better stop using a mobile phone buddy. They track you and everything you do on your phone. Better stop using Google, Bing or whatever. Better stop watching TV too, they keep track of you. Your I/O and CPU complaint are empty arguments because this shit goes on whatever you do that uses the internet. You just want to strike at M$ and be ignorant like Koogle. You are being ignorant just like the people writing these articles who try and act knowledgeable. Like psolord said, block it via your router. I'm sure someone somewhere will come out with an app to help you block or disable it.

you don't udnerstand. I said that I don't mind them taking data when I am giving them data, I mind them taking data and working in background because they can cause my game (for instance) to microstutter.
I don't care about the phone, I use wifi only and yes, I do use google, but unlike microsoft, google says it will not use my personal data (yea I know, they can and do but at least they say they wont), they don't collect my keystrokes etc. and they have very little interest in me anyway, I have an old phone, which tells them I am not a spender, I don't have a single payed app in my phone, Google Now is not available in my country, we got google street (very limited) like 7 months ago...What can they collect? Phone numbers and few emails that I keep in my phone? Sure, let them. I doubt they speak Serbian anyway lol :)

So again, even if google did shit in background of my phone (and they do but very little, I track wakelocks and stuff) they are not interfering with the performance of my phone.

As for other stuff, I don't care. I have addons that hide me and prevent most tracking on my PC, it is sufficient. I don't get adds in my mail (I do but, by some google miracle, they all go straight to spam on my google mail), I don't get spam sms messages on my phone, I get no calls from advertising companies etc.
Tracking my TV?! Jeez, what a waste of resources, I don't even watch TV. If they were really tracking me, I would be in jail by now, everything I watch is taken from the internet, every movie, every series, everything really. Why would I watch fucking TV lol 30mbit flat internet with no limits or fair usage policies for 30$ a month is all I really need (and have).

I don't personally care what MS takes, I take whatever steps necessary to limit it. I always check my OS, apps and network data. What they take anyway my government takes 10x more. @TV, same here dude. ;) This is nothing but a article designed to put MS down or troll MS release. Probably a disgruntled Linux user who's still pissed his AMD card sucks for games on Linux.

If you want to use Win10, use it. It's nice actually and stable I've been on it for 4+ months. No faster or slower than Win7. It plays all the games. If you are bored of Win7 interface, switch. Or don't it's your choice, just don't let some dumb article like this sway you. You can always go back to your old OS anyway. Always a hater around.. watch Koogle will swing by soon.

gx-x(02:21 AM CEST - Aug,20 2015 )
I am not affected by this article at all, I also posted a link debunking it, remember? :)

I am on 8.1 for now. Metro killed, classic start menu shell installed. Pretty much an uglier win 7 but a bit lighter.

There will be an SP1 for win 10 in the next month or so, and I am not in a rush. I am not rushing to fix something that works, and much like google live, cortana doesn't work in my country either so I have like zero incentive to switch to win10 until some dx10 games that I am interested in come out.

cheers ;)

No I just feel sorry for the uninformed malignant tumors aka sheeples that believe any and all bad press the OS gets. The tech sites that tell you what you want to hear rather than the real facts. I've personally tested the OS, I'm accredited and certified, I wonder about these douches writing articles slamming privacy etc. Do they even know a lot can be turned off, it just takes a wee bit of effort. Of course not. It's so easy to do that people have already released n00b program to do it for you. It's just the same BS as there was with Win7. I am on Win10 and I find it works well enough to encourage others on it. No plan to move back to Win7. No further plans to participate in any further troll articles.
