According to this Reuters report via Yahoo News, the game publisher and developer 3DO has filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of Title 11 of the United States Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California.

"This filing gives us more time to complete transactions in the interest of our stakeholders," said Trip Hawkins, Chairman and CEO. "While we hope that this news will generate additional new opportunities, at this point we are focused on pursuing either the sale of the entire company or the sale of its assets."

I had a few friends who worked at 3do. Some of them were laid off a few weeks ago, others are in the process of being laid off this week. This sucks because all of them were avid gamers (who happened to hate their own products). What really makes this even more sad is that all of the talent of 3do is going to be unemployed like so many other tech works in the Silicon Valley. Basically, Trip Hawkins really really screwed things up with his attempt to make brands (how many Army Men games can you make??) and the only game he ever wanted people to work on was High Heat Baseball since he is a huge baseball fan. Obviously he missed the clue train. So it basically sucks that he fucked things up so badly. And it sucks that a lot of talented, hard working people have to find more jobs in this crappy market.

There are still tons of software jobs in silicon valley if you are qualified.

i agree X there is no such thing as an unemployed gaming PROGRAMMER ! They will get head hunted by other Gaming Companies !

Not everyone there is a programmer obviously. I think the bulk of them will become slaves at EA games or something. BTW, the people at 3do really really got screwed. They did not even get their last paycheck and obviously no severance for any of them either.

Poor 3Do, I wish there was a way to contact these people. I am a recruiter working with Sony, Playstation in Santa Monica CA, I hate hearing this type of news.
