Wondering how much Windows 10 will set you back? In most cases, nothing. Microsoft has announced that its new Windows 10 operating system will be made available as a free upgrade during its first year of availability. All devices running Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, and all Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 handsets, will be able to upgrade to the new OS without charge. Microsoft's Terry Myerson said today that "once a device is upgraded to Windows 10, we'll be keeping it current for the supported lifetime of the device." The company had previously committed to updating all of its Lumia Windows Phone 8 handsets to Windows 10, but it wasn't clear what its plans were for offering the update to its desktop OS, until today.

Whatever this term means, I calc the life time of a device as 2 years, max three.

Why this? When I look around what's going on with Android and their "lifetime" no device older than 2 or 3 years will get upgrades to new versions.

But... here we have the answer to the question: Will W10 fail?
No it won't. Given out for free, resolving major issues of W8... a vast majority including me will upgrade for free. ;)

And, as the bard would say, therein lies the rub:

'free' will only work if it's free for everyone.
But it's the North America, so we know what 'free' really means: free with this and that limitation, terms and rubbish support.
If you want the real deal, you'll have to pay.
However, it would be an ideal spying platform for the government spies to peek into the homes all over the world.

Yeah, it is a free upgrade for the first year. After that people still using 7 or 8 will have to pay to upgrade. There is no time limit on it though, if you upgrade for free during the first year it is yours to keep. It's like how Windows 8 was only $14 for a limited time.

One of the MS people said near the end of the presentation that they haven't yet decided what they will do after the free year is up. So, subscription is possible, especially since they twice referred to Windows As A Service for the upgrade. If they go this way, I hope they keep the yearly cost very low....yes, there's still a hope :wink: :wink:

Microsoft is pushing hard to get to a subscription model for everything. With Office 2013, it was actually difficult to find one that didn't need the one-year Office 365 subscription, and it cost more. Making Windows itself a subscription product is going to be right up their greedy alley, this is not going to be a "get 10 free, use it forever with full functionality" deal. They've just lowered the barrier to entry a lot, the stinger comes later.

However, it is in their best interest to keep people on Windows if possible. Mac is already a solid alternative, and if you look at Linux Mint with Cinnamon it's incredibly good. Add to that that Steam now support Linux and that all Microsoft really has that's unique is stuff like Exchange and unified communications with Lync, they have to get people to stay on Windows. That might conceivably let them leave Windows 10 free, just to have it as an enabler of their online subscription offerings.

Will I be able to do a clean install, or am I going to have to install Windows 7 first, and then upgrade to Windows 10? Is this "free upgrade" version of Windows 10 going to be locked to my hardware? So if I buy/build a new computer, am I going to have to buy Windows 10 again?

Yeah, these concerns are base on truth... subscription isn't an option and so on... but nobody is forced to upgrade and a clean reinstallation of win7 should also be possible, except M$ expires your Key after upgrading (which could absolutly happen). So (at least I as a tech guy)... am I scared of Win10? No. M$ "can" try a lot of things, but in the end the choice is ours if we upgrade.
