TechNews - What If Windows 10 Fails? - tech
(hx) 01:44 PM CET - Jan,17 2015 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • Asus X99 Pro Motherboard Review - The first motherboard in our labs to support unofficial memory multipliers, Asus' X99 Pro quickly became the go-to product for our recent DDR4 roundup. Does the X99 Pro have enough additional features to justify its over-$300 price?
  • Leaked Maxwell GM200 Pictures - Sharp-eyed forum member Blade-Runner spotted leaked images of what appears to be a Maxwell GM200 card in production
  • Windows 7 SP1 mainstream support ends January 13 - Microsoft will officially end mainstream support for Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 on January 13, marking the beginning of the 'extended support' period, which will end on January 14, 2020. The popular OS runs on most desktop PCs, while the undead Windows XP slowly fades away from relevancy as Windows 8.x is eating its slice of the pie. The end of mainstream support won't really affect consumers as much as it will businesses, so if you're still on the Windows 7 boat, Microsoft will still be patching it to remain afloat for five more years, but developers will not be adding new features to it, such as the upcoming DirectX 12. Corporate customers dependent on custom-built features for their systems will have to pay for any patches that don't target the security or stability of the operating system.
  • What If Windows 10 Fails? - This is an interesting question. What do you think will happen if Windows 10 fails?
  • Outlook.com now allows you to save files directly to OneDrive - If you have an Outlook.com email address, Microsoft is rolling out a new feature that allows you to save attachments directly to OneDrive. I'm not quite sure if this feature is rolling out to everyone or is simply being tested across various accounts. I see it in some of my testing accounts while others are reporting that they still have the old method when viewing attachments. It makes a lot of sense for Microsoft to build this into Outlook.com as it not only promotes their OneDrive service, but adds another layer of flexibility to the platform.
  • Facebook introduces Amber Alerts to help find missing children - Facebook today said it has partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and will begin to push Amber alerts to users' Facebook news feeds. Facebook said it was inspired to create the service after an Amber alert posted to Facebook by a user resulted in the recovery of an abducted child. According to Facebook, the alerts will appear on both the desktop and mobile devices, though it won't push notifications or trigger alarms on lock screens. (Wireless network operators already send notifications to mobile devices.) Users will be able to share Amber alerts, as well as access the details on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's web site. The Amber alerts will be location-specific. The number of people alerted will depend on the size of the potential search area determined by the law enforcement agency involved. Facebook said some people may see a few Amber alerts per year, while others won't see any at all.
  • Apple Ends Free 'Single of the Week' Promotion - Apple has seemingly ended its weekly iTunes "Single of the Week" promotion that gave out a free music single download each week on the iTunes storefront. As noted by Business Insider, a member of the Apple discussion forums claims an Apple support employee informed him the company decided to drop the weekly promotion.
  • Google Translate Intros Instant Text Translations - Google has announced updates to its Android and iOS Translate apps that make having real-time conversations between two different languages much easier. First, Google Translate now lets users instantly translate text using the camera. When the camera is pointed at signs or text in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish, it will instantly overlay the words in English (and vice versa).
  • Google's Secret Study To Find Out Our Needs - Eight times a day Google asks test subjects about their information needs. Their replies can be sobering.
  • Macs Vulnerable To Virus That Can't Be Removed - A security researcher has discovered a way to infect Macs with malware virtually undetectable and that 'can't be removed.' The attack, which has been called Thunderstrike, installs the malicious code into the Boot ROM of the system via the Thunderbolt port.
  • The White House Is Now Taking Steps To Fight DDoS - DoS attacks are easy to pull off and extremely difficult to stop, which is why it's kinda nice to see the White House coming out with an Official Stance against them. In fact, President Obama just released a statement saying he's working on legislation to expand federal authority when it comes to fighting this sort of malicious internet behavior.
  • People Give Jimmy Kimmel Their Internet Passwords -  President Obama just unveiled a number of proposals to crack down on hackers. It's great that the government is working on this but we need to do a better job of protecting ourselves. So we sent a camera out onto Hollywood Boulevard to help people by asking them to tell us their password.
  • UK police arrest man connected to Lizard Squad - Police apparently arrested a London-based man affiliated with the group before the turn of the year (although it was over claims of PayPal hacking), but UK authorities have today claimed that they've tracked down at least one member who was involved in the attacks. Officers from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU) Cyber Crime Unit say that they have arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with a "the denial of service attack of Sony Playstation and Xbox systems in 2014 and swatting offences."
  • PlayBox - The PS4 / XBOX ONE Combo Laptop - Console modder, Ed Zarick, had previously squeezed both the PS4 and the Xbox One into separate monstrous, gigantic laptop form factors, with the console innards stuffed into the base, paired to a large 22-inch display. The two consoles are separated internally, but both feed the same display, and there is also a HDMI port to connect to an external display. The Xbox One side of the device does not offer access to the console's USB ports, however.
  • Saitek X52 Flight Control System - Knob Feel Review Special - Drew Scanlon from GiantBomb.com does a special Knob Feel Review of the Saitek X52 Flight Control System.
  • Motion controllers make great VR lightsabers - Testing a lightsaber with the Sixense STEM motion controller.
  • 20 Seconds Of The Weirdest Piece Of Wearable Tech  - Aptly called the 'Spider Dress', this piece of wearable tech features animatronic mechanical limbs that respond to external stimuli and defend the personal space of the wearer. It uses proximity sensors as well as a respiration sensor to both define and protecting the personal space of the wearer. We think it looks like Kerrigan from "Star Craft."
  • Drive a Lamborghini Huracan - POV video - This is what happens when you give an average joe a brand new Lamborghini Huracan and expect him to know how to drive it.
  • Ford Mustang GT350, GT350R order guide leaks online - A draft of the complete guide for both track weapons popped up in the forums of Mustang6G, offering the car's biggest fans the most detailed look yet at how the new models can be outfitted. Arguably the most notable news is that Ford lists both cars not as 2016 models, but as 2015s.
  • Boy Gets 3D Printed Clone Trooper Prosthetic Arm - Liam Porter got his new arm as part of an international effort to harness new technology to help those who need prosthetics they otherwise couldn't get.
  • The Beauty Of Traditional Japanese Wood Joinery - You know the old saying - measure twice, cut once. We don't want to think about how many times these traditional craftsmen had to measure in order to get this multi-part joint exactly right.
  • Guy Rides Snowmobile Across Water And Fireballs - Who needs a jet ski when you've got a snowmobile?!
  • House of Cards - Season 3 - Official Trailer - Netflix - Fresh off of Kevin Spacey's Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a TV Drama, Netflix released the first trailer for the third season of its hit show "House of Cards." Start getting your binge-watching survival pack ready.
  • Run All Night - Official Trailer  - RUN ALL NIGHT with Liam Neeson and Ed Harris - in theaters April 17th
  • Anarchy - Official Trailer #1 (2015) Ethan Hawke, Dakota Johnson - Academy Award nominees Ethan Hawke (Best Supporting Actor, Training Day, 2001) and Ed Harris (Best Actor, Pollock, 2000) lead a powerhouse cast including Milla Jovovich, John Leguizamo, Penn Badgley, Dakota Johnson, Anton Yelchin, with Bill Pullman, and Delroy Lindo in a gritty story of a take-no-prisoners war between dirty cops and an outlaw biker gang. Now, a drug kingpin (Harris) is driven to desperate measures in this explosive film based on Shakespeare's Cymbeline.
  • Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailer 2 - Ultron returns to cause even more trouble for our heroes in another trailer for Marvel's "Avengers: Age of Ultron," in theaters May 1!
  • iZombie First Look - From Rob Thomas and DC Comics, iZombie is coming to The CW Tuesday, March 17!
  • De Niro And DiCaprio Face Off In The Trailer For 'The Audition' - A movie directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Leo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, about Leo DiCaprio and Robert De Nero both trying to get the same part in a Martin Scorsese movie. Sure, ok.
  • Metallica's St. Anger (2003) Album Re-Recorded - Two things are incontrovertibly true: Metallica are one of the biggest metal bands of all time, and "St. Anger" sounded like hot garbage. Some members of Grace the Skies and Adust got together to rerecord the record the way it probably should have sounded. Sorry Lars, but the trashcan snare sound wasn't working.
  • Shooting Off Fireworks Under A Frozen Lake Shouldn't Work. But it does. - Who needs a fishing pole when you have explosives?
  • Lava Drip Into The Ocean Video - And that's how an island grows up big and strong.
  • Jon Snow Meets Legolas - :-D
  • Elsa Hosk for Victoria's Secret  - Elsa doesn't look frozen at all in these pics :)
  • Hottest Babes on the Internet #55 - Which one is hottest? ;-)
  • Irina Shayk, Adriana Lima, Kate Upton & more @ Manic Magazine 2015 - Manic Magazine 2015 Lingerie Special!

"What If Windows 10 Fails"

There will be idiots ready to buy it, hard to fail really. That and they have the classic, directx game engine card to pull, it will only work on this OS so you have to upgrade because our programmers couldn't possibly backport it.. trollololol

There are no DX10 or DX11 games worth having yet (how many years has it been?). So who cares about DX12, really?

What If Windows 10 Fails?

Same as what happened to Vista, Windows 8, Windows 8.1: we skip it and stay on Windows 7. If there's no worthy successor to Windows 7 by then, we move onto Linux for good - unless Google releases their Android OS which kills both Apple and MS. At that point, Apple dies (they are close to it already) and Windows becomes a server-only platform (which is also pretty close to that).

Outlook.com now allows you to save files directly to OneDrive

I had an Outlook.com mailbox, but MS won't let me log in anymore without entering another email address or a phone number, so I said fuck the Microsoft bully regime.

quote:
Apple Ends Free 'Single of the Week' Promotion

Yeah, well, dying companies have to cut expenses. I don't feel sorry for them. They ripped off a lot of people.

quote:
Macs Vulnerable To Virus That Can't Be Removed

Again, and Apple product, so it was expected. No quality just price and make-believe.

The White House Is Now Taking Steps To Fight DDoS

The White House has been taking a lot of steps lately, quite a few of them in the wrong direction or failing. I predict a sorry-ass future for internet users in the US. But, they choose their own governments so what do I care; this is what they wanted.

People Give Jimmy Kimmel Their Internet Passwords

I like Jimmy Kimmel. But it's funny how stupid people are. I guess that explains why their privacy is going down the toilet.

UK police arrest man connected to Lizard Squad

How come they never arrest Sony officials/employees when their service dies due to their own stupidity.

I was amused reading your post csimbi. ^^

From financial POV you cannot say Apple is dying. Although I feel the quality and security (haha ;) decreasing too, I see that as normal collateral damages of becoming mainstream. Apple will survive still quite a lot of time, I'm sure.

What if Win 10 fails? I don't think it will.

Due to different developments with the mobile market MS needed to adapt and still is trying.

Win 10 will improve things technicalwise at least for devs and admins.

Yes I still can have my Win7 Box with VS 2010, which is for now the best dev-combo I had, but as long as new tech isn't backported to Win7 I'll always consider to upgrade, if SP1 of the new OS is out AND the new OS has no real big flaws. What I do not expect from this version, besides normal MS fails.

But here matters the gamer perspective, are there games coming out not supporting W7 anymore? This would be interesting to foretell a fail of W10.

X99 motherboard is as interesting as 3-way gtx 980 SLi is to most of the people. There is ONE type of cpu that you can use in it and that's i7 Haswell-E, i5s will go on different socket and will use ddr3.

So when you are paying 1000$ for a cpu, does it really matter if motherboard is +-100$? Especially when ddr4 gives no real performance improvements over ddr3 but it's sole purpose is to prevent memory bottlenecks and to rip you off lol

as for win 10, if it fails, just like with Vista, will keep to the older OS that works better for us. For some it's win 7, for some win 8.1, doesn't really matter
