TechNews - The PC Has No Future? - tech
(hx) 11:22 PM CEST - Apr,06 2013 - Post a comment / read (8)
  • The PC Has No Future? - I don't think so :-) But Gartner offers grim prognostications for the PC's future, which is not surprising. That the analyst firm took so long disturbs and reveals much about how all these consultants seek to preserve client contracts before anything else.
  • NVIDIA's GeForce 700M Family: Full Details and Specs - Finally, NVIDIA has added GPU Boost 2.0 to the 700M family. This is basically the same as what’s found in GeForce Titan, though with some tuning specific to mobile platforms as opposed to desktops.
  • The Internet in the U.S. isn't built for an "always on" game console - The personal comments made by Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth on his Twitter page (thanks Baal) earlier this week (which were later called "inappropriate" by Microsoft) seem to center on the fact that other electronic devices have to require an power outlet in order to operate. That's 100 percent true. What is also true is that, at least where I live, the power is on nearly all of the time. A few times a year, we get brief power outages that typically last a few seconds. The only time that power goes out for longer than than is if we are having a bad weather event. In any case, power outages are rare. However, without a shadow of a doubt, my local connection to the Internet (via an ISP which I will not name here) has been anything but trouble free for the many years I have subscribed to the service. Just in 2013, I have had issues with staying online that required me to unplug my modem  more than once and, in a couple of cases, calling my ISP to send a signal to reestablish my Internet connection. That doesn't even count the couple of times when my Internet service was down due to outside forces beyond my control that lasted for a couple of hours each.
  • Japanese company creates the absolute pc-gamer desk - The Japanese manufacturing company Grapht, devised this clever desk to lure any gamer who respects his title. With ample space to fit every peripheral within easy reach, it still has room to accommodate a small fridge and a microwave. Add a very comfy armchair and you are set ($599.99).
  • Bitcoin Mining Malware Spreading on Skype - Bitcoin owners: Keep a sharp eye out for spam that could contain Bitcoin miners on Skype. Kaspersky Lab has issued a warning of malware spread by spam that contains code to download additional malware capable of Bitcoin mining.
  • Facebook Announces Facebook Home for Android - Facebook today announced a new push into the mobile space with new Android-based software that exists as its own user interface overlay. The UI overlay is called Facebook Home, and can be used to replace the home screen of select Android smartphones.
  • Facebook's first advertisement for 'Home' - Honestly, why would you want to see Facebook updates when you unlock your phone? Apparently Facebook thinks so and that is what 'Home' is about along with Chat Heads which is Facebook Home's new IM interface.
  • Apple, Android & Windows Tablet GPUs Compared using GL/DXBenchmark 2.7 - Intel's HD 4000 manages to deliver 3x the performance of the PowerVR SGX 554MP4, obviously at a much higher power consumption level as well. The Ivy Bridge CPU used in Surface Pro carries a 17W TDP, and it's likely that the A6X used in the iPad 4 is somewhere south of 5W. The big question here is how quickly Intel can scale its power down vs. how quickly can the ARM guys scale their performance up. Claiming ARM (and its partners) can't build high performance hardware is just as inaccurate as saying that Intel can't build low power hardware. Both camps simply chose different optimization points on the power/performance curve, and both are presently working towards building what they don't have. The real debate isn't whether or not each side is capable of being faster or lower power, but which side will get there first, reliably and with a good business model.
  • HTC One reviewed - If you're just looking for a great Android phone there are quite a few other options at lower price points.  But if you're in the market for the best Android handset this might be the one for you. The battle will be fought out between the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 and you should wait until both phones are on the market so you properly shop for the best price.  If you care a lot about build quality, design and consuming media on your device than the HTC One is probably the best one you can get. Unfortunately it comes with two important caveats: a mediocre camera and the not so great battery life. If those two are important to you then you might look somewhere else.
  • New Camera Stabilizing Systems Is Amazing - A new piece of filmmaking gear was just announced that could completely re-invent the complex process of camera stabilization. It's currently being tested and endorsed by Vincent LaForet, who's given us a little taste of what it's capable of. . LaForet is presenting a short film and behind-the-scenes video to illustrate its abilities, which consists of a completely custom-made gimbal and 3-axis gyroscope that digitally stabilizes the camera (a Canon 1DC in this case). It looks to be very light and portable, a far cry from giant metal arms, vests, and weights that almost the entire camera support world is based on.
  • So Russia Has an Upgraded Flamethrower Tank Now - In late March, a battalion of Moscow's Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops stormed a simulated enemy position in eastern Russia - armed with upgraded shoulder-fired and vehicle-launched thermobaric weapons. In a video from news agency RIA Novosti, shown above, the launchers are seen hurling 24 220-millimeter unguided thermobaric rockets at a time.
  • Petman Tests Camo - The PETMAN robot was developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from the DoD CBD program. It is used to test the performance of protective clothing designed for hazardous environments
  • Apple's proposed spaceship campus goes way over budget - Apple's proposed solar-powered "spaceship" campus is expected to cost an additional $2 billion more to construct than originally estimated. The total projected cost of $5 billion would make the structure more expensive to build than the new World Trade Center complex in New York City ($3.9 billion) according to five people close to the project as reported by Bloomberg. If you recall, the late Steve Jobs personally announced plans to build the facility during a Cupertino City Council meeting in June 2011. In fact, it was his last public appearance on behalf of Apple before his death.
  • Only God Forgives - Red Band Trailer - From director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, 2011) comes Only God Forgives starring Ryan Gosling as a kickboxer out to get revenge on his brother's killer.
  • Defiance - Great Place Trailer (TV) - Secrets. Lies. Romance. Just another day in Defiance. Defiance premieres April 15, 9/8c only on Syfy.
  • Finally! First clip of Iron Man 3 - check it out!
  • Pendulum Waves with Philip Glass - This is actually amazing!
  • A Hidden Camera Captures A Package's Hidden Journey - Ever wonder what happens to a package between the time you drop it off at the post office and it arrives, safely, at its final destination?
  • Why you dont drive that VolksWagen on the beach - How the hell did she do that? Car on the beach, keys inside and doors locked ;-)
  • Japanese SEXY Girl in Bathroom - Damn hot! :P
  • The best pics on the Internet #12 - check it out
