  • Belkin completes Linksys purchase; Linksys brand will continue - In January, Belkin announced that it would acquire the Home Networking Business Unit of Cisco, which includes the Linksys brand. Now Belkin announced that deal has now officially concluded. Specific financial details of the acquisition were not revealed. However, Belkin now says that the addition of Linksys to their business means they now have 1,500 employees that sell products in over 100 countries. People who current own Linksys products, such as their Smart WiFi routers, will still receive support through their normal channels. The Linksys website is still live and Belkin will continue to honor the warranties for current and future Linksys products.
  • Windows 9 coming November 2014 - According to Win8China, who have provided a number of Windows leaks in the past, Microsoft are likely preparing Windows 9 for a tentative November 2014 product launch, with a beta to be available in January 2014. Now of course this is just a rumor at this stage, however a release scheduled for late 2014 does fit with what we've heard in regards to a yearly OS update cycle for Windows. Windows Blue will be an upgrade to Windows 8 that will be launched this year, while a full version upgrade will come the following year, and naturally November is the perfect time ahead of the holiday season.
  • Is Your Cloud Drive Really Private? - If you upload a copy of a legally bought DVD to your cloud drive, could your provider label it as a copyright violation? What about a honeymoon photo set that includes one too many bikini shots - could an overzealous automated porn filter delete your pictures by mistake? Some popular cloud storage providers sweep accounts looking for illegal data. Right now, the focus is on hunting for child pornography, but their terms of service allow for other kinds of files to be considered non grata as well.
  • Dropbox Buys Mailbox - Dropbox has announced that it has acquired Mailbox for an undisclosed sum. Mailbox developed a mobile email application of the same name that recently became available. Dropbox believes adding Mailbox to its cloud-based offerings can "save millions of people a lot of pain" when it comes to handling their email and files. Dropbox is a provider of online storage, and has apps that work with most smartphone platforms. Dropbox said it hopes to offer Mailbox to as many people as possible in the near future.
  • Apple releases OS X 10.8.3, adds Windows 8 Boot Camp support - Apple has shipped a new point release of Mountain Lion that brings its flagship operating system up to version 10.8.3. The update includes a number of security and bug fixes and a handful of new features too, such as the ability to redeem iTunes gift cards using your Mac's built-in camera, as well as Boot Camp support for dual-booting Windows 8 and Boot Camp support for Macs with a 3 TB hard drive.
  • Homemade GoPro Camera Array Creates Stunning Matrix-Style Visuals - Marc Donahue has created stunning 'bullet time' visuals with his homemade array of GoPro cameras. The shutter speeds aren't perfectly synced, but that only results in even more interesting visuals.

  • Pentagon weapons-maker finds method for cheap, clean water - A defense contractor better known for building jet fighters and lethal missiles says it has found a way to slash the amount of energy needed to remove salt from seawater, potentially making it vastly cheaper to produce clean water at a time when scarcity has become a global security issue. The process, officials and engineers at Lockheed Martin Corp say, would enable filter manufacturers to produce thin carbon membranes with regular holes about a nanometer in size that are large enough to allow water to pass through but small enough to block the molecules of salt in seawater. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter. Because the sheets of pure carbon known as graphene are so thin - just one atom in thickness - it takes much less energy to push the seawater through the filter with the force required to separate the salt from the water, they said. The development could spare underdeveloped countries from having to build exotic, expensive pumping stations needed in plants that use a desalination process called reverse osmosis.

Let's hope it will not be a failure as 8 was.

Stay away from cloud-enabled anything for your own sake.

Privacy no longer exists.

You can keep imagining that it does for a few more years, maybe even decades, but it's really kinda gone. Sorry.

IMHO, that depends on the country and your use of the internet.
