TechNews - Google Glass: the future? - tech
(hx) 10:05 PM CET - Feb,24 2013 - Post a comment
Google's futuristic Project Glass could arrive earlier than expected and be available on store shelves by the end of this year. Google's Project Glass glasses will probably use a transparent LCD or AMOLED display to put information in front of your eyeballs. It's location-aware thanks to a camera and GPS, and you can scroll and click on information by tilting your head, something that is apparently quite easy to master. Google Glasses will also use voice input and output. Google plans to sell Glass for less than the $1,500 it now charges developers. If it launches this year, we expect it to be right at the end of it, targetting the busy Holiday shopping season. What do you think about Glass, excited about it?

I'm interested to see how much developed they will get after they finally start a beta with the public. Pretty cool piece of technology though. On the other side, I think this product has the potential to be unsafe like texting while driving or walking. People will divide their attention between two things and they will make mistakes that will cost them injury or worse. I also wonder how this will effect your eye. We already have questions about the radiation from our phones. What about this thing millimeters away fromyour eye? Also not sure I like the idea of Google seeing what I see, knowing even more about me and what I do and say than it did before. I have nothing to hide but still, too much information shared with people and companies I may not wish to share with....
  • Six Strikes Officially Begins On Monday - After several big delays the Copyright Alert System, known as Six Strikes kicks off on Monday many months after the proposed rollout date was to begin. The ISPs-industry giants AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon - will launch their versions of the CAS on different days throughout the week. Comcast is expected to be the first, on Monday. So, now we get to watch people get falsely accused, those with open WiFi suddenly have to fear bogus slow downs to their networks and other assorted collateral damage. Oh, and does anyone actually expect to see a sudden spike in "sales"?
  • Best Graphics Cards For The Money: February 2013 - If you count yourself among those lucky enough to have the money for one Titan card, consider a GeForce GTX 690 instead. Its dual GK104 graphics processors are faster, at the end of the day. The only time we'd recommend otherwise would be if you're working within the confines of a small machine unable to accommodate the 690's length: a Tiki, a Bolt, a Revolt, or something else along those lines. However, if you're willing to spend big on three Titans, well, there's nothing else out there capable of matching such a configuration's performance.
  • Benchmarking GeForce GTX Titan 6 GB: Fast, Quiet, Consistent  - Pay the same $1,000 for a GeForce GTX 690 if you only want one dual-slot card and your case accommodates the long board.  The Titan isn’t worth $600 more than a Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.  Buy a GeForce GTX Titan when you want the fastest gaming experience possible from a mini-ITX machine like Falcon Northwest’s Tiki or iBuyPower's Revolt.  Buy a GeForce GTX Titan if you have a trio of 1920x1080/2560x1440/2560x1600 screens and fully intend to use two or three cards in SLI.
  • Best Buy Offers $100 Discount on Windows 8 Touchscreen PCs - Beginning Sunday, Best Buy will be offering a $100 discount on all touchscreen Windows 8 PCs.
  • Windows 7, 8 and RT Updates Due on Tuesday - Breaking with the regular Patch Tuesday routine of the second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft has announced that Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows RT will be receiving a new platform update on Tuesday, February 26th, which may be a clue as to the launch date for the final version of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7. The Microsoft Support Page has word that there will be a platform update released on that day for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. In fact, you can download a pre-release version of that update right now. The update is supposed to offer "improved features and performance" and is a prerequisite for IE10. The same support page shows that there will also be a software update for Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Server 2012 on that day, along with an update rollup for Windows Server 2012 Essentials. At the moment, the only information on what's included in those updates is that they are supposed to "resolve issues in Windows".
  • Google Releases Chrome 25 Stable Version - Chrome 25 is adding voice-based services including support for Web Speech API and gives greater control of extension installations. The update is automatic for pre-installed browser versions or can be downloaded separately.
  • Microsoft Officially Launches Outlook.com - Last week Microsoft Corp. officially announced that its highly popular email service, Outlook.com, is ready for prime time. Since the release of Outlook.com last summer as a preview, millions of people have already actively started using it, making it the world's fastest growing email service, going from 0 to 60 million in just six months.
  • Google to offer free and unlimited music streaming - While not as popular as Apple, Google does currently offer their own music download service in the U.S. and parts of Europe.  Now they want to expand their music offerings by creating a real music streaming service that would be free and similar to Spotify. Reports have suggested that the new streaming service would be advertisement supported.  There has also been word that Google may offer an ad-free version for a subscription fee, but no word on how much it may run.
  • Google Glass Video Shows Off UI and Voice Commands - Google has put out another Google Glass video showing off new features like search and voice commands
  • I used Google Glass: the future, with monthly updates - Human beings have developed a new problem since the advent of the iPhone and the following mobile revolution: no one is paying attention to anything they're actually doing. Everyone seems to be looking down at something or through something. Those perfect moments watching your favorite band play or your kid's recital are either being captured via the lens of a device that sits between you and the actual experience, or being interrupted by constant notifications. Pings from the outside world, breaking into what used to be whole, personal moments.
  • Google Glass Has Another New Gadget - CONAN Highlight: It's another Google innovation, only this time going in an all-new direction!
  • Video Tracks Chinese Hacker In Action - It is pretty interesting to get a behind the scenes look at a Chinese hacker in action
  • PayPal Here Coming to the United Kingdom - PayPal Here is designed to offer small business owners the ability to accept all manner of payment forms, be it cards, check, of PayPal. The service is based around a small card reader that plugs into your smartphone and a companion app that runs the software side of things. Now PayPal Here is on its way to the UK, albeit in a slightly different form.
  • A video hands-on with the HTC One - The One will be available on carriers starting mid-March. The device isn't merely technically advanced, but is lovingly crafted from premium metals, too, leaving no doubt that the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has placed considerable blood, sweat, and tears into this handset. Rectangular, flat, and extremely thin, the HTC One is practically all screen. Its 4.7-inch (1080p) LCD display uses what the company calls SoLux technology for improved picture quality and generates 468 pixels per inch (ppi). This, says HTC, helps the One's screen to boast the most impressive viewing experience of any phone it has ever created. Since the display is slightly smaller at the same resolution, the One's screen has a denser pixel count than the Droid DNA (5-inch, 440 ppi).
  • Raining Circles On The Sun (video) - On July 19, 2012, an eruption occurred on the sun that produced a moderately powerful solar flare and a dazzling magnetic display known as coronal rain. Hot plasma in the corona cooled and condensed along strong magnetic fields in the region. Magnetic fields, are invisible, but the charged plasma is forced to move along the lines, showing up brightly in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 Angstroms, and outlining the fields as it slowly falls back to the solar surface
  • Nebulas Are Even More Amazing in 3D - Wired has a handful of cool 3D animations of nebulas posted today that are definitely worth checking out.

  • Daytona Speedway crash injures driver, 28 fans -  A fiery pile-up at the Daytona speedway on Saturday injured at least 28 fans and a driver after the 10-car crash sent car debris, including a tire, flying into the crowd in the final lap of the Nationwide NASCAR race. Race officials said 14 fans were sent to nearby hospitals and another 14 were treated at the Florida track, which will host the prestigious Daytona 500 race on Sunday.
  • Game Of Thrones - Season 3 Trailer - check it out
  • Robot and Frank Trailer - Set in the near future, aging curmudgeon and retired jewel thief Frank (Frank Langella) lives a solitary life until his son (James Marsden) installs a caretaker robot; against he and his daughter's (Liv Tyler) wishes. The robot upends Frank's lonely life - filled only with books and a visit to his favourite librarian (Susan Sarandon) - with a strict regimen of exercise, diet and gardening. Stubborn at first, Frank soon realizes Robot has the ability to pull off the most calculated of heists. An unlikely friendship, and crime duo, is born.
  • Russian Reaction To Meteorite - It's probably fake, but still CLASSIC!
  • How eight fake cops stole $50 million in diamonds in 5 minutes - It took eight heavily armed men only five minutes to drive two ersatz police vans through a hole in the perimeter fence of the Brussels Airport and onto the runway, lights flashing, where they then pried open the hold of a passenger aircraft headed to Switzerland, unloaded about 120 packages holding at least $50 million worth of polished and uncut diamonds, and sped off into diamond-heist infamy.
