TechNews - Office 365 Launches for $100/Year - tech
(hx) 12:23 PM CET - Feb,02 2013 - Post a comment / read (4)
  • Intel SSD DC S3700 Tested - In the four years that passed since Intel launched its X25-E, the company appeared to either lose its way or lose interest in the enterprise segment. The only follow-up effort to emerge from its labs prior to now was the SSD 710, and that drive was simultaneously underwhelming and expensive. With the introduction of the SSD DC S3700, Intel fixed many of the reasons why its SSD 710 didn't succeed. And along the way, Intel's engineers helped redefine the way we evaluate the performance of solid-state storage. The first major fix was a complete redesign of its controller. A new 6 Gb/s ASIC represents a major step forward for Intel. Not only does this help push performance far beyond what the SSD 710 could do, but it also establishes a new benchmark for consistency never-before seen from a SATA-based SSD.
  • Build Your Own: The Customizable, Illuminated Dream Machine  - The mouse, keyboard, gamepad, enclosure, memory, fan controller, and even power supply are loaded with configurable color controls.
  • Microsofts 128GB Surface Pro will ship with just 83GB of usable - Microsoft has revealed that the 128GB Surface Pro will ship with just 83GB of usable storage space. No word yet on how much space the 64GB version will arrive with but if the same 45GB is unavailable from the get-go, Microsoft may have a tough time convincing buyers to invest in a premium tablet with just 19GB of storage
  • Cool Morphing Touchscreen Keyboard - Tactus, a California company, has developed technology that can turn a flat tablet screen into a keyboard with bumpy button, according to the BBC .The keyboard bumps rise up from the screen when you need them and disappear when typing is finished. The company debuted the new technology at CES in Las Vegas. Due for release in the near future - 2014.
  • Office 365 Launches for $100/Year - Microsoft released Office 365 as a subscription, cloud-based service that costs only a little over $8 per month. Office 365 Home Premium costs $99.99 per year and features Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and Publisher. It also comes with 20GB of cloud storage in SkyDrive and 60 minutes of worldwide calling through Skype per month. This version works with up to five desktops, tablets and laptops, and will receive automatic updates since it's cloud-based. The Office 365 subscription gets harder to resist the more PCs you have. For those with two PCs, Office 365 will cost you $50 per PC, compared to paying $280 for the traditional desktop licenses needed for two PCs. When you get to $20 per PC (per year) for five PCs, compared to $700 to install Office Home and Student on five PCs, the subscription model becomes a no-brainer. Five PC installations for $100 a year is a pretty good deal.  On top of that, you also get a few freebies including 60 minutes of international Skype calling per month and an extra 20GB of SkyDrive storage. If you purchase Office 2013, you only get a single installation for $140. You also get an extra 5GB of SkyDrive storage.
  • Come May, we may see the 1080p Nexus 7 successor - Looks like the next Nexus 7 is making rounds. The device that is touted to be a successor will come from Asus and will offer 1080p resolutions (1920x1080 pixels) on its generous 7-inch display screen, thus reaching 315 PPi. It is also expected to contain thinner side bezels, advanced graphics (hopefully Nvidia Tegra 4) and most likely, Android Key Lime Pie! The report goes on to say that we should be expecting the tablet in May.
  • Skype for Android Update Brings Portrait Calling - Skype for Android received a nice update today that will help to complement your tablet's screen. More specifically, the app is now designed to support video calling in portrait view on your Android tablet. Also in the update, Skype for Android now supports Portuguese, Norwegian and English (UK). Finally, the update brings a few bug fixes and performance boosts.
  • Apple releases iOS 6.1 with greater LTE support - Apple has released the first major update to iOS 6 since the operating system was released in September 2012. The update, aptly named iOS 6.1, includes a handful of bug fixes as well as a couple of new features - most notably 4G LTE support for more carriers. Specifically, the update provides LTE support for 36 additional iPhone carriers as well as 23 more iPad carriers around the world. iOS 6.1 also gives Siri the ability to purchase movie tickets in the US through Fandango while iTunes Match subscribers can once again download individual tracks to their iOS devices from iCloud. This feature existed early on but was recently removed in a software update. iOS 6.1 is available now through iTunes or as an over-the-air update for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, third and fourth generation iPads, iPad mini, iPad 2 and fourth and fifth generations iPod touch.
  • Kim Dotcom Puts Up $13,500 For Anyone Who Can Break Mega's Security System - Kim Dotcom is so confident in the security system at Mega, the newly launched file storage service, that the New Zealand-based German is offering a bounty of €10,000 (approx. US$13,580) to the first person who breaks it.
  • BlackBerry 10 to Reach U.S. Stores in March - The Z10 is the monoblock touch phone that has a 4.2-inch screen. Think of it as a PlayBook Mini. It has a simple design that's very reminiscent of the PlayBook with its corners and edges. It is conservative, which is what we've come to expect from RIM and its devices. It certainly doesn't look cheap, and the overall impression it leaves is a good one.
  • Will a future Nokia Lumia Windows Phone be made of graphene? - Graphene has been called the strongest material known to man, even though its structure is just one atom thick. Now a group that has Nokia as one of its members has received a huge grant to continue research into Graphene.
  • Verizon debuts $60 prepaid plan for 3G smartphones - Verizon announced today the introduction of two prepaid plans which bundle together unlimited voice and texts exclusively for 3G smartphone owners. The company's $60 option includes a rather slim 500MB of data, but its $70 plan offers a more bountiful 2GB of monthly bandwidth.
  • HBO Go coming to Apple TV in first half of 2013 - Apple TV owners might be able to access more than 600 hours worth of HBO  movies and TV shows sometime in mid-2013. According to a report by Bloomberg, the Cupertino-based firm is in talks with HBO parent company Time Warner about a potential deal, but nothing has been finalized yet. The service is already available as iPad, iPhone, and Android apps but for whatever reason -- licensing? -- HBO has disabled the option to send video streams to the TV via wireless technologies like AirPlay. Up until now the only living room devices to support HBO Go included the Roku and Xbox 360 (with an additional Xbox Live Gold subscription at around $50 per year) and now Apple is joining the ranks.
  • Netflix vs LOVEFiLM - Want to watch a movie but don't want to have to leave home to rent one? Well, this dilemma is now a thing of the past thanks to online movie streaming services.
  • Facebook Now Has a Reusable Gift Card - Starting Thursday, Facebook users can log on and purchase this Discovered-powered card, which is then physically delivered to the recipient. However, for now, it only supports four businesses: Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora, and Target. To purchase one of these cards, users must direct themselves to the Facebook Gifts page. The new cards are found under the obvious Gift Cards & Digital category, but as of this writing were not present. Facebook indicated that Target, Olive Garden and the other two will be individually listed among Starbucks, iTunes, Hulu Plus and other current offerings.

  • Ziff Davis Set to Buy IGN - According to sources close to the situation, News Corp. has almost completed the sale of its IGN gaming unit to Ziff Davis, which is now owned by J2 Global. The price the business cloud provider - with online services such as eFax, Onebox and eVoice - paid for the gaming unit is unclear, but News Corp. bought IGN for $650 million in cash in late 2005. This transaction is considerably lower, sources said.

Tom> I love my Nexus 7. Its the perfect size and it so handy. watching movies, remotely controlling things, opp laying stuff to the big screen. Gaming on it is excellent too. Asus did a great job with the N7 so I look forward to this news. Android rocks! Apple sucks.
We've had the Nexus 7 16gb since day of release, it's no dpubt the best android tab out there -and i own a beast in the Asus Transformer TF300T 32gb with 32gb sd card plus of course keyboard and dock. I'm using it now like a netbook. For instant 'pocket' use, the nexus 7 is a beaut!
Then of course Google released the 32Gb Nexus 7 for the same price as the 16gb and that seriously pissed us off.... We didn't qualify for rebate because we bought early. As regards the Apple debate v's Android, yeah apple are attrocious in their prices, but their app quality is second to none, and that is truthful. Seeing as we've owned an Ipad 2 16gb for about a year now.
I can compare the same apps on both android devices and then on my Ipad and the Ipad just runs like glass soooo smooth, pure and simple. Googles store is an absolute mess! Try reinstalling an app and it's in amongst a complete mish, mash of dross. There is NO A-Z on install.
also most reputable companies wont put anything decent on Google. I have all my bloody new papers on Ipad but none on Android, cause there aint none. Games run a halluva lot better and jerk free on Ipad too.

This isn't about a cock-size debate, this is facts as i use them both. If you can't buy an app on Google that is on Ipad, who's fault is it? Googles obviously.
In saying that, i wouldn't buy another Ipad as the screen is shit, without forking out shit loads for retina-which i wont.
The battery life is fucking annoyingly good on the ipad too.
If google got the QC sorted on apps, then -like the build of the Nexus 7, it would be pure heaven. But i think google will never do that as it would cost them money and they would blow their brains out trying to sort out a Google store that worked alphabetically.......

Tom(02:42 PM CET - Feb,03 2013 )
Stumpus I run custom ROM and kernels on all my android devices. I have no lags of any kind. I have iPod crap here, never touched them. Wife and kids use it.
