TechNews - Windows 8 now available for pre-order - tech
(hx) 06:46 PM CEST - Oct,14 2012 - Post a comment / read (15)
Just curious, with Windows 8 looming what are your plans, if any? I've gotten to play with Windows 8 a bit and it absolutely horrifies me. I will definitely be sticking with Windows 7 as long as possible! :-)  BTW:  You probably noticed we finally moved this website to the new server. I do have to say the site is much faster than before! Please let me know if you have some issues... so far everything seems to be fine.  I still have to setup the promised sponsor page, ordered by contribution $  + few more things. So please be patient, be surprised :-)
  • Advanced Micro Devices Said to Plan Up to 2,340 Job Cuts - AMD plans to cut as many as 2,340 jobs, or about 20 percent of its workforce, a person with knowledge of the matter said. The cuts are expected to be announced as early as next week, said the person, who asked not to be named because the plans aren't public. At least 10 percent of AMD's staff of about 11,700 will be affected.
  • GeForce GTX 650 Ti Tested - At fairly conservative settings, the GK106-equipped GTX 650 Ti nearly overtakes Nvidia's GeForce GTX 560 and Radeon HD 6870. But when MSAA is applied at higher quality levels, the board takes a disproportionately large hit, ending up a few percentage points faster than the Radeon HD 6850, on average. As we saw in the benchmarks, that disparity can be mitigated somewhat through overclocking. In addition, most newer titles support alternative anti-aliasing modes, such as FXAA, that are easier on bandwidth-starved board designs. Assuming it surfaces at the $150 target Nvidia tells us to expect, the GeForce GTX 650 Ti offers the best performance at its price point, with average frame rates that outclass the Radeon HD 6850. The Radeon HD 7770 is beaten even more soundly. Conservative power, heat, and noise measurements make the card easy to live with and build an entry-level gaming system around, too. Another interesting comparison review can be found here (Gigabyte, Zotac, EVGA)
  • Corsair Neutron 240GB Solid State Drive - For a new contender in the consumer arena, this Neutron SSD simply nails it in the performance measurements. In the Steady State testing across the board we noticed solid performance that does not discriminate based upon the type of data. The Neutron performed remarkably well with both compressible and incompressible data. The 4K write performance was very good in both fresh and steady state. These same results were also experienced in our trace-based testing.
  • Toshiba Satellite U845: Ultrabooks Go Mainstream - It's one of the new 'budget' Ultrabooks, which hit the low end of Intel's Ultrabook spec for around $800, with designs that are still very thin and light but typically not as premium as class headliners like the Samsung Series 9 and ASUS Zenbook Prime. It's a breed that includes the Samsung Series 5 Ultra, HP’s new Envy 4t and 6t Ultrabooks, the Sony VAIO T13, and Lenovo's U310/410. How does Toshiba's Ultrabook stack up against them?
  • Dell to continue offering Windows 7 after lauch of Windows 8 - Dell will continue offering Windows 7 even after the release of Windows 8 at the end of October, the company said. The Windows 7 OS, which reached PCs in October of 2009, will be offered as an option to commercial and gaming customers, said Alison Gardner, director at Dell. The company will offer Windows 7 as long as it is allowed to, Gardner said.
  • Windows 8 now available for pre-order - If you're running Windows XP, Vista, or 7, you'll be able to upgrade to Win8 for just $40 when the new OS becomes available on October 26. That's for a downloadable copy, by the way. If you want a retail-boxed DVD, you'll need to shell out $70. According to the official Windows blog, you can pre-order those retail upgrades starting today. Newegg is now accepting orders for the Windows Pro upgrade DVD. What if you're building a new system and don't have an old Windows license lying around? The full versions of Win8 are available for pre-order, as well. Windows 8 costs $100, while the Pro version runs $140. Those are OEM licenses meant for system builders. Ed.note: No thanks ;-)
  • Microsoft signs off on Release To Manufacturing build of Office 2013 - General availability is slated for the first quarter of 2013. Microsoft also points out that customers purchasing Office 2010 from local retailers or resellers starting October 19 will receive the new Office for free once it is available. If you’re in the market to pick up Office 2010, it'd be best to wait until next Friday to do so
  • This is how they multiply in Japan -  I think the standard method shows how multiplication works much better than counting intersecting lines. Different people learn different ways, but in general it will be easier to understand that 3 groups of 2 apples is 6 apples than to add in lines and intersections as an abstract means getting to the same result. What do you think?
  • High Tech License Plate Frame Beats Red-Light Cameras - The made in USA, microprocessor controlled, smart license plate frame that prevents you from getting a red light or speed camera ticket. Drive free. A little on the expensive side but a really cool idea.
  • MIT creates carbon nanotube pencil - A team of MIT chemists have created a carbon nanotube 'lead' that can be used to draw freehand electronic circuits using a standard, mechanical pencil. In a normal pencil, the lead is usually fashioned out of graphite and a clay binder.
  • How Do You Know if You Are In The Matrix? - If you were in fact in the Matrix, how would you know? According to Silas Beane of the University of Bonn, there is in fact a test you can take to see if you are stuck living in a simulation.
  • Golem Krang, The strongest humanoid robot - The U.S. Navy has already shelled out a $900,000 grant aimed at helping the project along. As you probably already guessed, the robot is far from being ready for truly 'dangerous situations' at this point. Below you can check out a video of the Golem Krang, a robot that will be the basis of the new Macgyver bot project.
  • The Science of Orgasms - Everything you wanted to know about orgasms, but were too afraid to ask. Who knew science could be so sexy?
  • Lexus brings a Magazine to Life with CinePrint - Watch a clip of the innovative new CinePrint technique Lexus has created to merge print and digital. Inspired by the stunning technology of the 2013 ES
  • Huge explosion of natural gas tanker in China - check it out
  • Tower Demolishing FAIL! - Judging by the panicked screams in this video, the folks demolishing a 275-foot smoke stack in Springfield, Ohio didn't expect it to snap power lines, destroy power equipment, or terrify children when it collapsed into the wrong direction. There were no injuries resulting from this incident, but 8,000 people did lose their electricity due to the power equipment being crushed.
  • The Ohio State University Marching Band - This is the halftime performance of The Ohio State University Marching Band on 10/6/12 against Nebraska. The theme was Video games and it included parts from Zelda, Halo, Pokemon, Tetris, and others.
  • Man gets Charged by a Gorilla - If you get charged at by a massive gorilla, just stand there and you'll be fine! What could be easier? :-D
  • Dogs in Slow Motion - 1000fps - check it out
  • Why Russia has so many dash cams - This video is basically a guide on how to avoid being sued for hitting a "pedestrian" because the law punishes you much harder than if you say hit another car.

Oh yeh Winshite8

I believe sometime during my WinXP days I said stuff about Win8... if there was anything good I might have predicted Microsuck would get right with Win8, I take it all back.

Pile of fking shit , Win7 will be the new XP...

well actually, at 150$ 650Ti should be avoided. @170$ you have 7850 1gb which literally demolishes 650Ti, @ 130$ you can buy gtx 560 which is also better (especially with higher res and AA) then 650Ti. Also, radeon 7770 is priced below 130$ in most cases.
Add the fact that AMD announced price cuts for 7xxx series and we can clearly see 650Ti ending up in the dumpster or in 120~130$ price range.

And before you draw the line add that AMD drivers suX big time, then a Nvidia is the obvious choice!

Tom(08:35 PM CEST - Oct,15 2012 )
wouldn't touch an AMD/ATI card with a 10 foot pole. Even as a HTPC video card (marketed to be capable) I got rid of the card because I was just sick of the bloated and crap drivers. Just wasn't worth saving $30 bucks over. A big regret to even had thought ATI could drive a HTPC. So I replaced it with an nvidia card and you know what? I've yet to have 1 single problem with it at all and it's still running with the original driver I put on. ATI/AMD is nothing but a piece of junk.

gx-x(09:05 PM CEST - Oct,15 2012 )
I prefer nVidia but you guys are exaggerating. While I had my share of problems with AMD and would never save 20$ in 200$ segment and buy AMD, I would rather pay 150$ for a faster card then 170$ for a slower one just because of drivers. I also haven't been using AMD's CCC for over 4 years because yes, it sucks it's useless and it's crap. I just used radeonPro all the time and almost everything was fine on most of the cards.

tride(09:30 PM CEST - Oct,15 2012 )
You know what man ? I never understood those comparisons with the PC components, or whatever else... cars for example.
You got a price range where you get the same thing, either way.
You say AMD is faster ? How much ? 1-2fps ? some MHz ? or whatever.
Who really gives a shit today about a couple of frames ?
When you got all the games that run on consoles perfectly, they run ever better on PC.
So what really matters ? 10 bucks of problem free card or 5fps more on performance ?
Since, you know, people use VGA's not only for gaming, this argument is not valid at all.

Just saying, that those reviews, comparisons etc. are just marketing strategies for big companies to sell more and more every year.
No one need a new VGA every year, but yet they sell them with milions...

gx-x(09:55 PM CEST - Oct,15 2012 )
nVidia is far far away from problem free. :S They recently had WHQL drivers that caused PC freezes on youtube. Go figure.

Anyway, I am not going to argue over this. I've tried lots of cards, some had zero problems, some had plenty. From both companies. I don't change lot's of graphics cards for my own PC, but I get in contact with lot's of them. Every now and then I get to play with a card from either nV or AMD that is brilliant and sometimes I get to toy with card that sucks balls. Last card I tested was some gainward gtx670 that I couldn't even bare to test fully due to the card being so fucking loud it hurt my bloody ears after two tests. I wasn't even interested in seeing what it can actually do. It also had driver problems which are not exclusive to gainward cards only. This is just an example of a sucky nV card for 320 euros that I would throw out of the window if I were allowed to.

edit: while I do tend to favor nV over AMD, some generalizations I just can't stand.

ggn(10:09 PM CEST - Oct,15 2012 )
Been using ATI cards for over a decade now with no more issues that nvidia cards have. Which either makes me super lucky or the people extra whiny :).

And about win8 - meh I'm fine with win7. I won't upgrade just for the sake of it.

Finally, congrats for the new server - hope you update the site for years to come! (frequent viewer of this site since 1999 or so!)

I'm disappointed that GameGuru has that above comment right on the front page. "Absolutely Horrifies" me?? wow, what the hell did you do with Windows 8 that could possibly absolutely horrify a person? Let alone someone responsible for a great gaming news site??

You know, I held high regard for many of the articles posted here, but after that, I will definitely think twice when it comes to application talk, maybe you should just stick with the gaming chat.

Let me tell you, Mr GameGuru, I game every day, and since using Windows 8 to test for work, on my gaming rig, I have not even booted back in to Windows 7.... Gaming performance is at LEAST on par, if not better, on Windows 8 than it is with Windows 7, go figure!!

The thing is, you would have noticed this, surely? did you test any game on it?? given that your site is, umm, about gaming? or did you simply install it, play for a day and your opinion is now made?

Cheers,
GM

Windows 8 is a kludge. Why would I want a phone interface on a PC? Oh well, maybe I'm really getting old...

I don't have my own numbers, but take a look:

Windows 8 boots up quite a bit faster than Windows 7, that's all.

BTW: every second OS of Microsoft will be failed or at least will not be a success. Here is the list. Windows 3.1 was definitely successful, Windows 3.11 was not. Windows 95 was successful, Windows 98 was not. Windows 98 Second Edition was definitely successful (actually the most successful edition of the Win9x line). The Windows ME (Millennium Edition) was not accidentally called for Mistake Edition! There were many good reasons for that! That is end of the Win9x product line turning toward the New Technology solutions. Windows NT 4 was a pretty successful story. Windows 2000 was good but did not worth to mention. Windows XP was the ever successful product in the NT product line. Windows Vista was the ever greatest fail of Microsoft. Despite the SP2, the Vista was unable hit the top. Windows 7 is a very successful OS, restoring the fallen honor of Microsoft. Now comes the Windows 8. Guess it, what happens?

If I ever get to use Windows 8 in the future, turning off Metro would be the first thing I'd do after install. I don't get why MS insists on using this UI in their desktop OS. In fact, this is one of the reasons why I skip Windows Phone altogether after using Windows Mobile for years.

you can't turn off metro completely. You will still have to go to metro interface to configure apps, shut down, manage internet and connection etc. It's a tablet/mobile OS pretending to be something else in PC iteration. There is no real benefit in going to win8 from win7. Only drawbacks imo. In many IT circles win8 isn't even discussed anylonger since it's viewed as joke on anything other then smartphone/tablet devices.

Yep, to be honest, this the version of Windows I'm least interested in. Normally I'm itching to try the latest and greatest, but this one is just meh to me

I said it since the beginning that Windows 8 would suck. As soon as I saw the interface and touch screen bs I knew it would fail bad.
