TechNews - Bug in SSD 320 Drives - tech
(hx) 02:11 AM CEST - Jul,18 2011 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • Intel Investigates Possible Bug in SSD 320 Drives - Intel's 320 Series solid-state drives reportedly ship with a glitch that could drastically reduce the drive's capacity. Flocking to Intel's official discussion board, many users have complained about their spanking new flash drives suddenly dropping from their full capacity to only 8MB, effectively blocking all stored data and making the drive useless.
  • Banned from Google+, Anonymous creates Anonplus - Google has reportedly banned a handful of Anonymous members from Google+ (it's not exactly clear how many accounts were shut down). The hacktivist group likened Google's actions to the stories of activists being banned from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, as well as governments blocking various websites using Internet censorship tools. As a result, Anonymous has decided to create its own social network: Anonplus, located at anonplus.com.
  • Shocker: Most people using Google+ are male - Earlier this week Google,as part of its latest financial results, confirmed that Google+ already has over 10 million registered users. But who exactly are all of these people who are jumping in to check out Google+? Two separate web sites, SocialStatistics.com and FindPeopleFirst.com, both claim that a large majority of Google+ users, at least so far, are male. FindPeopleFirst.com says the numbers of males on the service come out to 73.7 percent. SocialStatistics.com claims the number of male users are even higher at 86.8 percent. In hindsight the overwhelming number of males is not that surprising as tech services such as Google+ tend to be adopted first by males before the general populace begins to use it.

  • How Hackers Stole 24,000 Files From The Pentagon - We're all human, you know? That's roughly the trick that the hackers most likely relied on when, earlier this year, they managed to steal over 24,000 files from a defense contractor.
  • A guy hooks up to the internet using a 1964 modem - Circa 1964 Livermore Data Systems 'Model A' Acoustic Coupler Modem, live demonstration!
  • Watch the Handcrafted and Meticulous Making of a Leica Lens  - Leica released a video that details the meticulous manufacturing process behind their lenses. The standard Leica lens is made in Germany, and consists of 100 different parts. The beautiful thing about the video is how much of the process is done by hand. While robots are in charge of things like engraving serial numbers, the etchings are then hand-lacquered. In the video you can see humans painting, cementing and testing the lenses among other things. We're not so useless after all ;-)
  • SpaceX Sets Sights on Launches, Dreams of Mars - The millionaire brainiac behind the Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) program has high ambitions of future private space exploration. Founder Elon Musk seeks a trip to the Red Planet of Mars before NASA's mid-2030s current projected timeframe.
  • Boring Old Lab Coat Gets Transformed into Wearable TV (video) - The Video Coat is a 60inch LED video display built onto a lab coat.
  • The Thing Prequel Trailer - The Thing is directed by Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. It's set at another Antarctica research site that's invaded by an "alien life form" (the same one from John Carpenter's 1978 film, as this is a direct prequel). The discovery of an alien craft brings in graduate student Kate Lloyd (Winstead) who partners with Sam Carter (Edgerton), a helicopter pilot, to hunt down this alien. "[They've made a film] that takes place in the same reality as Carpenter's: a place where the people on screen are real and the way they react to an alien entity is the same way you'd react if you were there in their situation." In theaters Oct. 14
  • First Thrilling Trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Contagion - An upcoming action-thriller that centers on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak and prevent it from destroying the world. • Melvin: The Super Rube Goldberg Machine (video) - As far as Rube Goldberg machines go, this one is pretty damn neat!
  • Los Angeles With No Cars (video) - With 'Carmageddon' looming in Los Angeles, I decided to take my 'LA with no cars' video and re-edit it with new music, coloring and opening shots. Editing was done in Final Cut, coloring done with After Effects and shot on a Canon 60D.

Google+ is a lot more to the point whereas Facebook is spam games and crap. Can't stand Facebook myself. Google+ does more all I need.

The problem isn't "Big Pharma". I'm not saying they're not scum - they are. I'm saying the problem lies in the underlying fabric of society where money and the profit motive are used to run society, distribute resources etc instead of something sensible, like a resource-based economy.

Big Pharma and all the other scum like health insurers and the like are only doing what the system implicitly encourages - making money at all costs.

"...a resource-based economy."

For those of you who don't keep up with the kiddo lingo, this is one of the new code phrases for communism. Evaluate appropriately.

Well, since that particular misconception reared its ugly head, let me supply some resources to explore to evaluate whether or not a resource-based economy is communism.
