Blizzard on Real ID - briefly
(hx) 10:57 AM CEST - Jul,08 2010 - Post a comment / read (9)
Blizzard has responded to the huge amounts of discussion surrounding for the idea, telling Gamasutra that the company is "definitely listening to player feedback."
The Real ID system remains optional within Blizzard's current games like World of Warcraft and StarCraft II. Players can take advantage of it by adding friends by their Battle.net-associated email account, rather than their public user name.

The system is only planned as a requirement on the Battle.net community forums. StarCraft II's forum will begin using Real ID later this month, and World of Warcraft's will begin as the Cataclysm expansion pack's release approaches.

"It's important to note that both enabling Real ID in game and posting on the official Blizzard forums are completely optional," the Blizzard rep said. "Players can continue to read the forums anonymously regardless of whether they choose to post in them, and their gameplay experiences will not change if they choose not to use the Real ID communication features in game."

He also says players can enable parental controls to keep their children from using the Real ID system, or to disable their forum posting capabilities.

Players can actually register any name they wish when signing up for their Real ID -- but an account for a given game must be tied to a unique CD key for that game, and Blizzard says it plans to attempt to enforce the use of legitimate names.

Asinine. So what they're saying is you can either STFU or show the entire world your actual real name, the one that can be tracked down and identity stolen or get you harassed by any online psycho who feels like it.

Good thing I'm already avoiding Blizzards games, this won't make me any more prone to join in.

Sounds like a fair move, no more likely to suffer identity theft than currently but may well cut down on all the internet tough guy twats you run across online.

Koogle(10:47 PM CEST - Jul,08 2010 )
The only people who find internet tough guys online are the fragile minded twats who can't take an opinion without resorting to petty rhetoric because it shatters their ignorant and arrogant beliefs.

Anyway fuck blizztard I ain't buying any of their shit. Imposing real id's online its insidious and only benefits the corporation and its noob fanboys (only it won't help them at all). It also benefits sick psychopathic assholes and scumbags.

Its just asking for trouble.

The way it sounds is that if you want customer support, use RealID, if you don't use RealID, tough luck on getting tech support.

I hate going overboard on the drama. Reality unfortunately is employers check facebook your credit everything they can these days to find any nugget they might not agree with. We don't need people having an easier time of generalizing about our personal lives and how we spend our spare time. Top this off with high narcissistic culture in the USA where with your name and information people will go to various lengths to be assholes.

I never had a facebook or myspace account. My friends will get a call from me if I have something important to say or I will drive over there. Phone calls regarding work are another thing. Why would I want my employer to get in touch with me anywhere? No thanks! Leave a message if I'm not home.

This RealID thing really has the chance to kill WoW way before its time.

JamieKirby> This RealID thing really has the chance to kill WoW way before its time.

I doubt that this will have that large of an effect.

you can be surprised.

besides, they changed their minds about making it a requirement on the forums because of how many people hated the idea.

Now it's just another xbox live or steam account.
