Gaming in 2010 and Beyond - Where do we go... - tech
(hx) 07:14 PM CET - Dec,06 2009 - Post a comment / read (4)
The chaps over at Tweaktown have pusblished an interesting article entitled 'Gaming in 2010 and Beyond - Where do we go from here?' Here's a taster:
So why was 2009 such a disappointing year for gaming? Well, one of the biggest reasons was the change of the guard with respects to Direct X. It looks like many developers held their breath while waiting on Microsoft, NVIDIA and AMD to drop the DX11 shoe. Out of those that did release games, most were stuck back on DX9 (a decision made to get the most money out of their titles). The only game of note that was DX10 (10.1) was from a company formerly known only for their benchmarking software. FutureMark released an online game called Shattered Horizon that not only uses DX10.1, but also had more than its share of firsts. In fact, the number of DX10 and 10.1 titles is still very short three years after the launch of Vista.

Sadly it seems that our investments into DX10 hardware have gone to waste. Game developers have either ignored it or only implemented halfhearted support for the feature set available there. This is a direct reflection on the poor market acceptance of Vista. After all, why spend the money on DX10 development if the majority of your potential purchasers are not using it?

But if DX10 has been overlooked by the developers, what then of DX11? Will we see a move towards this new standard? We know that Windows 7 has had a significantly better adoption rate and received far better reviews from the press (the same ones that slammed Vista), but as of today we are still only hearing about a handful of games that will be coming for DX11. Of these only Battlefield Bad Company 2 is a title really worth watching.

So how does TWIMTBP affect DX11 adoption? Well, the most important factor is the current lack of any DX11 hardware from NVIDIA. Because of this, NV is not going to dump a ton of money to develop games for their competitor. But while there are no DX11 based GPUs from NV, they are still dumping cash and resources into the development of games that use other features of NV GPUs like PhysX and 3D Vision. Once the DX11 parts are ready and in the channel then they should shift quite quickly to pushing DX11 support for games. In the end this is going to be good for gamers (as long as they do not lock out AMD GPUs), as it will help offset the cost of development and could mean less expensive (or at least the same price) games for us to abuse.

Who wrote this idiotic statements?

How about crysis warhead? (dx10)
Assassins creed? (dx10.1)
Tom clancy's HAWX? (dx10.1)
Stalker clear sky (dx10.1)
stalker call of pripajt (whatever, can't spell it lol) (dx11)
Tomb raider legend (dx10)
FarCry 2 (dx10)
...
these are just that came first to mind, I could find at least 10 more, I am sure of it!

"Where do we go from here?'"

Better games, not games where more time has been spent trying to gloss it over using the latest shitFx (like the crap Vista/7 Aero junk ui really), eyecandy appealing to noobs with piss poor taste, and less consolized crap ports.

"these are just that came first to mind, I could find at least 10 more, I am sure of it!"

yes I'm sure you could find a bunch of average/medicore games... perhaps if Win8 doesn't turn out to be the same poorly developed and designed crap shit with the shi7 explorer shell, then dx11/12 might stand a better chance, as this is always going to be about the OS platform and how the market takes to it first, the gfx hardware, and the game developers support for newer technologies helps push it(even if its just marketing). Of course if Microsoft weren't fully retarded dx10+ and pc games could have much been more successful, still I'm sure they are happy having plebs buying the xblock360.

lol :) nice comment :) I like your style.

on the other hand, I wasn't cherry picking titles, I was just naming some as a response to "most of them are dx9" and "almost non-existent dx10 and dx10.1 titles".

M$ didn't fok up directX 10/11, it's fine, it just screwed with OS-es and support. You can go blame developers for the rest ;)

One time -before consoles- the PC was always refered as the best platform for games and would always be top of the league. It was in those halcyon days, because hardware was stable and so was the OS -up to XP. Those days are well and truly vaporised! Those that haven't smelt the coffee are still stuck in the dark days and will always call the kettle black.

You would have to be an absolute idiot to miss the fact that hardware and OS's are in continual flux and totaly unstable, it's never been a flat playing ground for eons now. There is no shelf life on CPU's or GPU's which in turn means that a perfectly good mobo (under 2 years old) is binned because there is no longer a CPU to go in it, or a very limited few to be found!
Games, why are there a poor lot??
I personaly don't give a hoot about childish opinions on consoles. This is a business mans game! If consoles sell MILLION of titles because hardware is STABLE, then so be it. Your the idiot for not moving on and continuosly ploughing (or is it pissing) money up against M$'s wall.

If i was a dev/publisher, it would be ALL going to consoles because that's money in my pocket. The only reason the PC still has games made for it is because M$ BUYS dev's to make games for its windoze gaming and artificialy PROPS up the PC market. In reality it has to do this to ALWAYS so that it keeps it's OS sales flowing. ONLY on Windows gaming or EggBox... it's just juggling money form one hand to the other.

They are so THICK that all they had to do was keep the PC hardware STABLE for several years and dedicate titles to it =$$. Instead it's pure greed to make a new graphics card in less than six months, charge 3x the cost of what it in reality costs to make and cash-in on the idiots with more money that sense. Which of course forces the gamer to upgrade, whether they want to or not, or leave the cesspool.

Me i choose to SAVE money and buy many XP titles that i never played and bloody well PLAY them on my XP machine!! As for new games, well it doesn't need a genius to work out that i own a console and free MP as well as no need to upgrade every six months for what exactly.......??? Ah, yes! JUST for the latest DX10/11 badge. How friggin sad..........

Yes, M$ did fuck up DX## because it's ramming it down the throats of dev's and hardware manufacturers that it has a finite shelf life. So if you don't expect to sell enough of a game or GPU etc. Then you aint going to support it and ALWAYS going to support the tried and trusted DX9.... a no brainer again....
