Windows 7 Review: You Can Quit Complaining Now - tech
(hx) 02:11 AM CEST - Aug,07 2009 - Post a comment / read (12)
Could Windows 7 accomplish everything that's expected of it? Probably not, but it makes a damn good run at it. The chaps over at Gizmodo have tested the gold master, the final version going out on October 22. Here's a taster:
Windows 7 is not quite a "Vista service pack." It does share a lot of the core tech, and was clearly designed to fix nearly every bad thing anyone said about Vista. Which ironically puts the demon that it was trying to exorcise at its heart. What that means is that Windows 7 is what Vista should have been in the public eye—a solid OS with plenty of modern eye candy that mostly succeeds in taking Windows usability into the 21st century—but it doesn't daringly innovate or push boundaries or smash down walls or whatever verb meets solid object metaphor you want to use, because it had a specific set of obligations to meet, courtesy of its forebear.

That said, if you're coming from Windows XP, Windows 7 will totally feel like a revelation from the glossy future. If you're coming from Vista, you'll definitely go "Hey, this is much better!" the first time you touch Aero Peek. If you're coming from a Mac, you'll—-hahahahaha. But seriously, even the Mactards will have to tone down their nasal David Spadian snide, at least a little bit.
-
Windows XP was a great OS in its day. Windows Vista, once it found its feet several months in, was a good OS. With Windows 7, the OS is great again. It's what people said they wanted out of Windows: Solid, more nimble and the easiest, prettiest Windows yet. There's always a chance this won't be a huge hit come October, given the economy and the state of the PC industry, but it's exactly what Microsoft needs right now. Something people can grab without fear.

Sure, as soon as they either give me my cash back for Vista or a free legitimate upgrade to 7 sure I'll stop bitching.

Ozieo(03:23 AM CEST - Aug,07 2009 )
There will no immediate bitching since every newly installed OS runs smooth and fast, you can only judge if you really start using it, and the software you install on it, first trusworthy reviews can be expected around newyearsday.

Same old... as regards M$, I still have XP as my primary games machine (alongside my PS3), only bought a laptop with Vista inc. It's the fact that you barely get any decent game usage out of an OS -XP prime example- before it's binned and you need a shed load of hardware again, on top of, the latest Winblows#. If they actualy got the bloody OS up and running on release instead of spending 5-6 years patching it, it wouldn't be so bad (maybe) But that's how the cash-cow lives like a parasite; stay and feed the upgrade yearly or bin it completely and go console. At least you get a *guaranteed* gaming experience without all the crap ass-ociated with M$ and it's bloat!

Penetreitor(05:55 PM CEST - Aug,07 2009 )
I've used W7, and looks preety good so far, so I think will switch off from XP soon, but there are some issues left, Windows Explorer (Vista/MAC Finder like) really sucks for people that WORK with a computer, and some cool software like VMWare still having compatibility issues (physical partition usage for example).

I hope some workarounds will appear in short time to I decide to switch definitively.

strangestsensation(06:40 PM CEST - Aug,07 2009 )
I guess this is a gaming site and not an OS site.

-VMWare and Win7? I have no problems. I use a file and I use a disk partition for it with no problems. I found no issues with Explorer either...

-Why go to Win7 if you are on Vista? I'm on Vista 64bit and plan to stay until a SP1 or 2...Having tested Win7 from the start I found it nice but I see no reason to scrap what I have. Win7 upgrade was just $50 or something on Amazon were you asleep through that. Don't moan when a) you don't really need it b) there are and was great offers. Additionally, if you bought Vista in the last few months you get a free upgrade to Win7. What more do you want? A kiss from Steve Balmer?

-Stumpus sometimes I wonder about you. Sometimes I see your logic but this time it is completely lost on me. Do you know anything about OS's? What OS isn't patched every month/week? Linux has updates literally every week. I just downloaded 13 for Redhat and CentOS. From exploits to core dumps to drive issues. I know very well about patching Linux as I use 3 flavors. Additionally I use Solaris that has patches almost every week. I also work on a Mac and it gets patches regularly too. So because MS has updates you moan? Makes no sense what so ever. You sound like a grumpy old man with nothing better to do but moan.

If you are on XP, moving to Win7 is a good choice. If you have a piece of garbage PC that hasn't been upgraded in years it should still run fine, just with less eye candy. Like honestly guys, stick to criticizing games and leave the OS out of it. Clearly you are out of touch or definitely biased. I don't love MS and I don't hate em. I use their OS everyday but to sit and criticize when you don't know what you are talking about is another thing.

better workflow and functionality on XP +working shell extensions to improve Explorer...

XP
= 8+years and still damn good
= Loads of addons, extensions, better themes
= Many utilities to add the same functionality as Vista if you want.. but done better!
= Better control panel layouts.. actual fucking tab dialogs.. none of that retarded lets just take everything out of a tab and make it into a new fucking window retardation found on vis7a etc etc
= Better fully accelerated sound and fx without extra wasted %cpu
= Less retardation added or changed by Microshite useless efforts
= Everything works, and generally better aswel

Vis7a
= Extra Shit Explorer
= Extra Shit Explorer related areas
= Shitty UI layouts.
= Shit Aero Glass theme again
= Mega SHIT customization really
= Shit Improvements on what was actually done
= Broken UAC, flawed security
= Broken Noob OS - practically the entire UI/UX screams it
= Barely anything is actually better for an OS that is 8years older than its main rival XP, infact more things are WORSE!
= Oh and Less things work.

If you're using 32bit you'd have to be a complete noob to choose Vis7a tbh.. but if you think power XP users are missing out on anything with Vis7a then you're seriously mistaken.. until Windows 7 starts getting worthwhile improvements that aren't going to work on XP then most XP aren't going to be bothered about it. 64bit well you can obviously put up with shit OS functionality aswel as even less support.. but yeah I guess all the RAM must really come in handy.

Well yes it's a gaming site but it's also a general site that covers all aspects of gaming inc hardware etc -a bloody good one to!
Anyway, i don't see how hard it is to see my point of grief?? M$ plugs -or tries to- its OS as for gaming (DX 9/10 etc) Well (my point that you missed completely) if so, why not release a *dedicated* OS for games ONLY! You are fine with your 'playing with OS' and testing them etc, etc. Me? i don't give a monkeys left nut. i WANT a games OS that works out the box ON release and doesn't need updating in the GIGABYTE dept over the next 5-6 years for silly holes in its security blah, blah... absolutely jack $hit to do with improving games is it....
So yes, you sit and use their OS every day, but i ONLY use their OS to play freakin' games!!! Why do you think i stressed that point? to stop silly comments put back at me like yours... gee whiz.
I have a laptop for my ordinary internet 'activity'. And why i like my PS3 for home cinema and *instant* gaming without the ar$ing about.

I hope that clears that up for you. Please understand that people are entitled to be 'different' from you and are quite constructive, even if it sounds like an angry rant, if you would only see it instead of reading what you want to see. :?

As previously stated Stumpus, stick to games and promoting Sony PS3/Bluray which you seem to do better at. Hell maybe you should go work for them?!

Your MS bashing however is all too old and just way too predictable. Go back to your Mac or Linux crap you use. Maybe one day you will find the 'update' option in your OS and realize the amount of patches you download constantly, including security patches.

Yes Stumpus I beta test, so yes, I know what I'm talking about. I have been using both Win7 and Vista for nearly a year. Yes, I think Win7 is good and I am currently on 64bit Vista and no I am not upgrading and Yes my Vista 64bit works perfectly fine with everything including all my hardware.

MS has got nothing but praise considering Win7 and all you guys do is act like n00bs.

Wow! Now who's a fanboy?(glass houses and stones come to mind....)Hey, i'm a gamer, not an M$ worshipper. Why do i have a PS3? Because it plays Blu Ray films. Does the XBox? NOPE, because HD is DEAD. -yes you can download films etc but that ISN'T my choice ok. Do you honestly think i as an adult can't make an informed choice as to what audio equipment i buy? It's actualy called making a personal decission. Cut to the chase ok, the PS3 has fully upgradeable firmware -and always had- from day dot. When me and my wife chose an entertainment home cinema system it fell into a couple of factors:

1)Blu Ray was the supported format after the death of HD. FACT
2)The PS3 HDD could be replaced with ANY standard laptop HDD -unlike the XBox. FACT
3)I like and own MANY Sony products -long before they produced consoles! They make TV's,Cameras, audio etc,etc that a helluva lot of people own around the world, but are not fanboys. FACT
4)The PS3 had dedicated hi def support for fims 'out the box' on release. FACT

Now, there is nothing fanboy about stating why you chose a particular product over another, other than facts! (in my case) I don't give a toss about HALO,GoW or MGS# -that's kiddies land. If a game is good that's all i care about.
The last thing i would boast on a forum about is you test and can't see no wrong about M$... What is it they have actualy done that has been equal the world over? Nothing is the answer
They have divided the world with their drakonian attitudes and principles. Hey you don't need me or anyone to tell you those FACTS. It's in the European courts to see that. I suppose they are fanboys to you eh?.........and with that.

strangestsensation(08:38 PM CEST - Aug,11 2009 )
I have a PS3. I do download movies. Who doesn't? I use my ps3 heavily and it streams to my entertainment system which is a 7.1 THX certified system. I stream my kids shows to my PS3. I also stream my paid music, photo's and home movies.

but anyhow, you lost the point and now your just selling again which I already stated you are good at. But don't bash something like Win 7 when it's clear you lack the knowledge of OS support and just how many people use Windows compared to the other (cough) contenders. Win 7 is good, I've used it and I work in OS's every day of my life and have been a Windows user since it first ever came out. A lot in this thread like the goof talking about how explorer and the gui sucks is out of it. Are we supposed to have a new OS that looks like XP? Like hello... things change and for Win7 its only been for the better and to take advantage of new and existing hardware.

And actually HDDVD is not entirely dead there are people promoting changes to the format and claim it could be better than Bluray... I personally love Bluray and could never imagine going back to DVD

Cross Fire's flagship feature is its "Ghost Mode", which puts one team in possession of top-secret cloaking technology, rendering them invisible to the opposing team.
