BioShock 2 Details - briefly
(hx) 11:21 AM CET - Mar,14 2009 - Post a comment / read (7)
GameSpot forums have what appear to be actual BioShock 2 details from the new issue of GameInformer.  The sequel has players assuming control of "the first ever" Big Daddy, according to creative director Jordan Thomas. Players will be armed with a drill, and will also be able to upgrade their weapons and various plasmids. As you liberate Little Sisters from other Big Daddies, you'll be able to either Harvest or Adopt them. Adoption apparently lets players escort a Little Sister around levels, fighting off splicers as the Little Sister harvests the all-powerful Adam from corpses. (thanks ShackNews)
It's 10 years since the first game. The Big Sister returns to rapture, bringing back the Little Sisters with her. You play as the original Big Daddy. You can use the drill, the rivet gun, and you can still use plasmids. Little Sisters have been given a new look to be less creepy, as you're seeing them from the eyes of their protectors. You don't get your own Little Sister from the start, as you're a renegade Big Daddy. So you fight other Big Daddies to get your own sister. You can still harvest them, but the other option has been changed to "adopt" instead of rescue. If you adopt the sister, she'll ride on your shoulders, and you can go around Rapture looking for corpses for her to collect ADAM from. When your sister goes to harvest ADAM, a wave of Splicers will come and start attacking to try and harvest her. You have to hold them off until she finishes harvesting. You gain some ADAM from this, but not enough to tide you through the game. You can permanently rescue them, but the article doesn't say how. The Big Sister is one of the surviving little sisters from the last game. She's the new ruler of Rapture, and is the main antagonist of the game. With each Big Daddy you kill, the game lets you know how close you are to incurring the wrath of the Big Sister. When you do, the little sister you're with will sing a song about how the Big Sister doesn't want you playing with her, then you get jumped.
Doesn't seem terribly inspired.. same setting, same enemies (with a few new ones), same plasmids with small upgrades. The novelty has kind of worn off, I wonder how well this will sell? I'm a strong believer that some stories should be left as they are, but this is the gaming industry and money talks.

I tried on three separate occasions to play through the first one. Couldn't get into it.

I perked up when i heard of the premise of this one, but reading this "story" they're trying to use just ends my curiosity.

If they wanted to do a cool game based on this idea of rapture, they should've started the series off from the beginning where every one in rapture hasn't turned into some mutant yet... It would be much cooler to see rapture tear itself apart if there were still some humans around to emote about how terrible their lives have become and why they are going to choose to modify themselves to match the ones who harvest them and their friends. Why couldn't you have gotten to Rapture before it was a practical ghost town?

I've always wanted to play post-apocalyptic games, but ONLY if I get to experience the apocalypse from the beginning. That's the best part of the game. For example, I liked the demo for prey more than the game itself, because it started off like a normal night, and everything turned to shit. The "game" part after that ceased to interest me on the same level.

When some city/village/etc in a game is occupied by only enemy AIs and no citizen AIs, it feels too much like a run and gun* action game and less of a story to experience. I never want to be the only source of attention for the bad guys in the game. That is probably why in GTA4 i like to pick gun fights with thugs and call the cops on them to watch the shootout that ensues, haha. Those cops are ruthless, and it's terribly entertaining!!!

*Not saying I don't like run and gun, but I like to be given the proper motivation to do said running and gunning. Otherwise, what's the point? might as well play something else that does have that quality.

Oh, and if all the former humans did just turn into splicers and stuff, did they all have to look the same as a result? Shouldn't we be at a point where there's more than 3 or 4 character models in a game? can't they randomly generate faces and outfits now to just lay overtop a mesh? (yes i know hardly any game has a large variety of models, but assassins creed did a pretty good job of it.)

Any one else have a similar feel about this game or games in general?

So you didnt like fallout3(and 1 and 2 for that matter) because you didnt experience the apocalypse?

Not much financing on this one. Bioshock was fun a new one would be cool but the same setting and same enemy? Ecckk.. I'd get it if I was bored and I'm far from bored these days :)

I do agree with midlaugh on most of what he said. Many valid points and reasonable opinions. Still, I really like Bioshock, it's a great game.

exactly what I feel. A face-to-face display of emotions would have been more powerful.

don't agree, I think it CAN be very fun either way

That was the "wow!holyshit!" factor. The beginning was outstanding, it did feel grand and I was gasping for air when all this was happening on the screen. One of the most special moments in games history. But you can't have EPIC! events all the time. And it wasn't the gameplay, which grabbed you by the balls, it was the CHANGE, reminds me of War Of The Worlds in a way. "Everything turned to shit" was a preamble, like a CGI movie in Warcraft3 or WoW or Warhammer. But I too like to think, what if you would be able to experience the same strong feelings and drop your jaw on your knees during the whole game.

again, completely agree
That's why Half-Life felt real, why HL2 feels like a world, like there are people living in it.

Off topic but was “Prey” that Native American shape shifting spirit dude, alien invasion game?

Never bothered before but it should be bargain bin by now so I might grab it.

Nosferatu(12:26 AM CET - Mar,16 2009 )
Yep, it's the one. You forgot portals and wall/ceiling walking. All in all it is (in my case was) a very fun game. Enjoyed it a lot.

Cheers for the confirmation, looked it up and it’s too cheap now for the sold out range re-release, only £2.99 / $4.20 approx.

Need to wait till I need/want to order something else so I get free postage. ;)
