TechNews - Windows 7: Cure for a bad economy? - tech
(hx) 02:42 PM CET - Feb,28 2009 - Post a comment / read (1)
  • New ultra-low-voltage Intel CPUs may launch in March - The Core 2 Duo SU9600 will reportedly have a 1.6GHz clock speed with a $289 volume price tag, while the Core 2 Solo SU3500 will run at 1.4GHz and cost $262
  • 7 Intel Core i7 X58 Motherboards Tested and Compared - In terms of overclockability, we have two obvious winners: the Asus Rampage II Extreme and the Gigabyte X58-Extreme, both motherboards targeting the high-end enthusiast market.
  • ASUS M3A78-T AMD 790GX Socket AM2+ Mobo tested - ASUS' M3A78-T motherboard has a little of something for everyone. Extreme gamers can take advantage of its socket AM2+ Phenom II processor support and Crossfire capabilities. Those looking for a nice upgrade for their existing socket AM2 processor now have HDMI, HDCP and a half decent integrated videocard at their fingertips.
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 Tested - Even though GTX 295 hasn't demonstrated ultimate performance in certain tests, it's apparently a king of 3D graphics, the fastest graphics card these days.
  • Dell's Inspiron Mini 9 drops to a delicious $199 - The Mini 9 runs on Ubuntu Linux and features a crisp 1024 x 600 resolution 8.9" color LCD screen, wireless connectivity, an ample Intel Atom N270 processor (1.6GHz), 512MB of RAM, GMA950 graphics, a 4GB solid state drive (plenty for surfing the web, checking e-mail, office apps) and a 4-cell battery.
  • MacBook Air hinge defect not covered by Apple's warranty? - OMG, how can something like this not be covered under warranty?
  • AMD OverDrive 2.1.6 - This brings the handy utility up to version 2.1.6 so grab it if you need it, try it if you haven't.
  • Rivatuner v2.24 released - Rivatuner has been updated towards version 2.24 RivaTuner is a complete powerful tweaking environment, providing you everything you may need to tune NVIDIA GPU based display adapters
  • Adobe Flash Flaw Could Give Attackers Full Control -  The new exploit can allow attackers to take full control of your PC
  • MSDN, TechNet To Get Vista SP2 RC Next Week - Microsoft is broadening the pool of testers getting the near-final Release Candidate (RC) bits of Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • Windows 7 RC to natively support .mov files - While this may delight owners of cameras which output in the .mov format, it's also good news for anyone who enjoys watching movies on their PC, as movie trailers, particularly those on Apple Movie Trailers, come in .mov format, and so require QuickTime (or a freeware player such as VLC) to view.
  • Microsoft: Windows 7: Cure for a bad economy? - It's no secret that Windows 7 will ship before the end of the year. In related news, InfoWorld reports Microsoft tweaks Experience Index for Windows 7 and MSDN Blog has article called 'Engineering Windows 7'
  • Windows Mobile 7 coming next year, says Ballmer - Steve Ballmer confirmed on a conference call yesterday that Window Mobile 7 indeed won't be here until next year.
  • Can The Sonim XP1 Withstand A 9mm Bullet? (video) - The Sonim XP1 is marketed as an indestructible cell phone, but can it withstand a shot from a 9mm gun? Will it survive the bullet?
  • Want an iPhone 3G for free? Fly to Japan -  Softbank Mobile, the exclusive carrier of Apple's smartphone in Japan, will give anyone who signs a two-year contract a free 8GB iPhone 3G. If customers prefer the 16GB model, that will cost them $118 (reduced from $350). The 16B iPhone will also be discounted to $118, from $350; the 8GB used to retail for $235.
  • Five Reasons I'm Not Buying a Nintendo DSi - check it out
  • Colbert Dials Up the 1997 Internet (video) - I still deal with people who use 10-year-old versions of Internet Explorer, etc, despite newer versions being completely free. I'm thinking I'll send all of them this clip and see if they get it ;)
  • Worm Disables CPU Fan, Causes Overheating - Be on the lookout for a worm that causes your CPU fan to stop working, leading to overheating. Since the worm is an actual earthworm, the threat of it spreading is minimal ;-)
  • Awesome Tunnel Has 41,000 LEDs (video) - This project is a two hundred foot tunnel made by an artist named Leo Villareal. The lights are actually 41,000 LEDs that move in various patterns. You can see the display in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. through the end of 2009
  • Barack Obama May be the Next Antichrist, Hitler or Both - I am amazed at the amount of people that took this seriously!
  • Alien Speculation (video) - Will the real ET be little green men or little green bacteria? SETI Institute Senior Astronomer Seth Shostak theorizes what our first alien encounter might be like
  • Family Guy pokes fun at Bill Gates and the Zune - The last episode of Family Guy 'Oceans three and a half' takes on Bill Gates and the ill fated Zune. However what I liked most was the spoof of Christian Bale's outburst on the sets of Terminator 4
  • Echelon Conspiracy Trailer - Mysterious cell phone messages promise a young engineer untold wealth, then make him the target of a deadly international plot that threatens the entire world.
  • Greg Mottola's Adventureland Red Band Trailer - Miramax has debuted a crazy red band trailer for Adventureland, the 80's coming-of-age comedy from Superbad director Greg Mottola.
  • The Science of Watchmen Video - University of Minnesota physics professor James Kakalios was hired as a science consultant on Watchmen and now with the release just a few weeks away, Kakalios has put together this short video talking about various scientific aspects of the film. I was hoping this would be a lot cooler than it was, but it's still a good watch and it's interesting to hear about the actual scientific side of things in Watchmen
  • Everything is Possible (video) - Sometimes Internet videos don't go wrong. Here are some excerpts from the only 30 times that's happened.
  • Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers - While levels are fairly consistent across the US, eight of the top 10 pornography-consuming states voted Republican, says a study.
  • 12-hour Viagra-fuelled Orgy Ends in Death - The 28-year-old Russian man died after taking a bottle of Viagra pills for an apparent 12-hour sex romp
  • Maggie Grace - UHQ Photoshoot Celebrity Pictures - Margaret Grace Denig (born September 21, 1983), known professionally as Maggie Grace, is an American actress
  • Megan Fox Shows Us Some Awesome Cleavage - I know you had no doubt that her cleavage was going to be awesome, but Megan goes and proves that it's even more awesome than you had ever imagined!

I'm afraid there is a simple answer to the MacBook Air hinge, that is to NEVER buy an Apple product again!? Like it's soooo simple. Also, why buy as soon as released? Wait until folks 'beta' test it and then read feed back. It's the same old scenario with software (games etc) nothing new. Besides what do folks do to break a laptop hinge? I've had my Dell for nearly a year and can't for the life of me think i could break the hinge accidently. Bizarre
