Self-Identified Lesbian Banned from Xbox Live - briefly
(hx) 03:24 AM CET - Feb,26 2009 - Post a comment / read (7)
A woman known only as 'Theresa' has stated that she was harassed and then finally banned from Xbox Live because she identified herself as a lesbian in her gamer profile. When she appealed to Microsoft, she says they told her that other gamers found her sexual orientation 'offensive.' She wrote:
I just recently saw a thing on your site about someones gamer tag being banned because it had the word gay in the tag. I had a similar incident, only my account was suspended because I had said in my profile that I was a lesbian. I was harassed by several players, 'chased' to different maps/games to get away from their harassment. They followed me into the games and told all the other players to turn me in because they didn't want to see that crap or their kids to see that crap. As if xbox live is really appropriate for kids anyways! My account was suspended and xbox live did nothing to solve this, but instead said others found it offensive. Today I received a message from another gamer calling me a fag. I am a lesbian, so they aren't too smart if they cant get their anti-gay slurs right. Microsoft does nothing to stop this or prevent it, but instead sides with the homophobes. No one will help me get the word out about Microsoft's anti-gay policy. Not even the HRC who says Microsoft has a positive image with them. Not to me it doesn't!
Announcing your sexual orientation (gay, straight, or otherwise) has no purpose on a service like XBL *except* to garner attention. What does that information do to promote gameplay? Nothing. Gender is even completely superfluous. I'm not saying she should be banned for it. I don't see how it's inappropriate or offensive. But you'd think it would be common sense not to put information of a personal nature on a service like that. It's a place filled with people who want to crush opponents and talk smack. Not exactly a bunch known to be friendly in general. What's your opinion?

" What's your opinion? "

...that your opinion is ignorant- ya big GAY!

and big boo hiss to MS for being teh uber suck once again! .. banning the gamer paying to use its xbox live shite service! and getting harrased because they choose to put lesbian in there tag :? so fucking what, how pathetic and lame, just do the easy thing eh MS..... anyway looking at MS retarded terms and conditions they might aswel just assign gamers a "PLAYER <insert number>" and censor individualality it might cause offense. Afteral its just about the gaming, this whole personality and expression humans have just gets in the way of making more money from stupid and immature people.

In some more enlightened countries, what Microsoft did would be illegal due to anti-discrimination laws.

How the hell is pointing out your orientation "offensive"? If someone is flooding you with messages like "C'mon, you're gay, aren't you?" or "Oh come on, don't be shy, admit it" or some other annoying shit, then THAT's offensive and deserves a ban.

Saw that she's a lesbian, realized you're hetero -- now go along, play your game, have fun, realize that people are all different!

Wow, like M$ has opened it's doors to being sued big time! Put it this way, a tag is just that, if someone calls themselves 'death angel' for eg, then that's a blatant reference to the anti-christ or devil worshipping etc, etc. But it's not, it's a virtual world.
If someone calls themselves a lesbian, so what, it certainly keep the little creeps away from them! -maybe they want that? Whatever, there are NO sexual overtones other than gender; straight, gay, lesbian and bi. Wow and i thought M$ was soooo mature. Obviously not.
Bedtime Mr. Gates said the nanny state

Obviously, and to noone's surprise, Japan is a more mature country than the States.

She should not have been banned. that was a punk-coward move by whoever did it. On the other hand. there is nothing wrong with posting the info she did. But just because you can does not always mean you should. I think it was stupid for her to do that in this environment. she kind of asked for it. not that I think they were right for harassing her. the were dead wrong. but if you walk into a hole, expect to fall in it.....
