- DDR3 Round-Up: Memory Performance With The Core i7 -
Higher clock speed memory modules perform better than lower clocked
modules with a Core i7, and likewise, lower-latency modules perform better
than higher-latency modules. Triple-channel memory configurations will give
you more memory bandwidth compared to single-channel or dual-channel
configurations. But anyone who knows a smidge about memory knows that these
are basic rules that typically remain true with any platform
- F.E.A.R. 2 Gameplay Performance and IQ - As you just saw in the
benchmarks,
Monolith's F.E.A.R. 2 performs quite well with today's and even
yesterday's latest hardware. Even with max settings and 8xAA, the GeForce
8800 and Radeon 3870 all ran with very fluid frame rates at 1600x1200, and
some may feel quite comfortable with the frame rates we saw from these cards
at 1920x1200 as well with those settings.
- Site claims to unlock fourth core in Phenom II X3 - Korean
techsite
Playwares claim to have successfully unlocked the missing core on a new
Phenom II X3 710. Using a Biostar TA790GX motherboard with an SB750 south
bridge, the site claims enabling the fourth core was as easy as changing an
Advanced Clock Calibration setting in the BIOS.
- Intel's response to PC Perspective's alleged SSD 'slowness' - A
laptop user placing light workloads on their X25-M may never see the worst
of these issues, but many users are going solid state for their desktop OS
partitions, and a typical
power user
workload can fragment these drives in short order. It is likely that
other manufacturers will employ similar write combining techniques in the
future, and with those new devices may come similar real world slowdowns
- ASUS VW266H 25.5inch LCD Monitor -
The image quality is really only adequate, which means professionals
should obviously look elsewhere, but the display does well with fast motion.
Being able to have a huge display along with the ability to turn graphics
settings up makes the display a great choice for gamers.
- Kingston demos 24GB RAM desktop -
Using six
engineering sample 4GB DDR3 memory modules, a Core i7-920 CPU and
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard, Kingston demo'ed a 24GB PC
- Asus Eee PC T91 preview - The first and most important feature on
this Eee PC is
its touch-sensitive display (with the typical 1,024 x 600 native
resolution) which is attached to the rest of the machine via a 180-degree
hinge. This hinge also rotates by 180 degrees and enables the T91 to
transform itself from a traditional netbook into what Asus claims is the
smallest and slimmest tablet PC to date when the display is folded back over
the keyboard
- 9-inch, SSD-based netbooks going down in price - Looks like
netbook makers
are applying 'sharp' price cuts to 9-inch SSD-based netbooks-supposedly
a strategy to clear inventory in the face of reduced demand
- Mysterious Mac Mini Movie -
The clip shows a
case which is fundamentally identical to the current compact desktop,
including its wrap-around aluminum skin, white plastic top, and slot-load
optical drive, but continues to show the exact same change in ports as
before. A fifth USB port has been added, while Mini DisplayPort and mini DVI
replace the earlier, full-size DVI video connector. FireWire 800 also
replaces the earlier FIreWire 400 port
- Share Your Internet Over USB, No Drivers Needed -
Plug the device
into the computer with the internet connection and then run a USB cable
from said device to the other computer. Boom - instant internet connection
sharing; no need to install special drivers or extra software.
- ATI Catalyst 9.2 Analysis - XP & Vista -
For the most part performance seems to be up, which is always a good
thing. The particularly good news is that there are performance improvements
seen in the more important minimum department. This is where we want to see
the increases which hopefully help in going above that golden 30 FPS minimum
we always like to see.
- Windows 7 Beta Review - Right now,
Windows 7 may
not be the fastest operating system, but it feels better than Vista ever
did and is extremely fun to use
- Windows 7 could hit release candidate stage on April 10 -
The first
Release Candidate will officially come out on April 10. This purported
deadline might slip, of course, but Neowin claims the Windows team "is right
on schedule with development" so far. If things keep chugging along at this
rate, it sounds like Windows 7 might be ready in time for the summer
- Google users hit by mail blackout - Google's web mail service is
restored for many users after
a blackout lasting more than four hours.
- Beware "Error Check System" Facebook Application - All you
Facebook users should be aware of
this bogus "Error Check System" application currently making the rounds.
While you guys probably won't fall for that, you have friends and family on
Facebook that would
- Microsoft makes fired employees mail back over paid cheques -
Microsoft has
now issued letters to many of its laid off staff claiming that they
goofed up on the accounting front , overpaid them and are now asking to mail
the over paid amount back to Microsoft or get a tax surcharge
- Video Tour of American Nintendo DSi -
The latest
portable gaming and multimedia device from Nintendo has been on sale in
Japan for several months, but the American version is just around the
corner. Look for the American version of the Nintendo DSi to hit retailers
on April 5th. The MSRP has been set at US$169.99, so the Canadian price will
probably get pretty close to C$200.
- Judd Apatow's Funny People Trailer - Universal has debuted a very
long, very funny, and very touching trailer for Judd Apatow's Funny People.
This is Judd Apatow's third feature film and it looks pretty incredible, I'd
say, and I'm already going to say that it's one of my most anticipated
summer releases based off of
this trailer.
- New Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Featurette -
This
two-and-a-half-minute featurette plays like an extended trailer for the
upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but with some interviews
and behind-the-scenes footage in addition to all of the actual finished
scenes.
- Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embraces Early Teaser Trailer -
The film is
described as a "four-way tale of amour-fou, shot in the style of '50s
American film noir at its most hard-boiled, with signature Almodovar themes
such as fate, the mystery of creation, guilt, unscrupulous power, the
eternal search of fathers for sons, and sons for fathers." Sony Pictures
Classics will bring Broken Embraces to limited theaters starting on November
6th.
