id Software Focusing on Console Gaming - briefly
(hx) 11:27 AM CEST - Aug,11 2008 - Post a comment / read (6)
Edge Online has posted a few quotes from id Software's John Carmack, talking about how PC gaming is only a junior partner in id Software's upcoming titles:
We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we're not making decision around the PC. It's probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy, although obviously, our day-to-day development is predominately on the PC."

As a developer that is primarily focused on packaged product, id may have reason be wary of the PC market. Many triple-A first-person shooters have found substantially bigger audiences on consoles than PCs in recent years. But id is venturing beyond packaged products with Quake Live, a free web client version of Quake III Arena.

In spite of the business reasons that have driven id towards consoles, Carmack still has an affinity for the PC, and still expects the biggest id titles to make it to the platform. "We certainly expect Rage and the Doom project on the PC," he said. "We’re contractually obligated to have Rage on the PC, and I would be stunned if we did not do Doom 4 for the PC. It would just be wrong. Even if it was a marginal business case, we would still do it because it’s the right thing to do."

Very constructive comment
If the PC would remain stable for 5 mins, then it would get more support. But since Gates has an OS planned for every year (sarcasm) and CPUs and GPUs last about 6months, then development cycles are worthless.
Console are going to be first practicaly always for latest titles.

Get over it.

The PC is a nightmare to keep up with and there's no point having latest hardware if it keeps changing ie DX10.1 cards, what a farce for a miniscule improvement. By the time a PC game ships it has about 6 generations of graphic cards it supports!

Genoism(06:54 PM CEST - Aug,11 2008 )
the reason all the devs are switching to consoles is because the piracy rate is far less then it is on the PC. Can't blame them either. They spend years working on something just to have it stolen...

Sabot(09:16 PM CEST - Aug,11 2008 )
Piracy is what they want you to believe!
Krytek act like Crysis was the first exploited game? If that was the case and Krytek lost millions of bucks, then why do they go on and produce "Warhead"? If you have been ripped as bad as they claim, you leave PCs for good, not continue supporting it only for Warhead to be pirated just as much
Back in the 90's, DOS games were the easiest games to copy (PKzip anyone? ) the truth was you could install umpteen installs of the one game on your machine (no registery) But back then folks would get shareware (like Doom, which was a third of the whole game before you bought it) piracy never affected games like today.
Yes piracy is rife, but that's because the PC is a cash-cow. It's a no-brainer. Also people will steal a game for selling (just like films at picture house), rather than like DOS games to enjoy personaly.
Pure greed= sell anything that they are not even remotely interested in for the sake of a few bucks.
Back on topic:

The simple truth is there is one SDK per console and every game produced on that SDK will work on the millions of consoles that are sold.
Bugs are easily patched and applied, unlike the PCs hardware nightmare.
Also lots of shops do trade-ins on console games/hardware but not PC [u:42fdf921ce]anything[/u:42fdf921ce] So you again lessen piracy with the consoles. You can also rent all console game formats before buying -or not without losing lots of money.

Consoles equal, simple, easy money [u:42fdf921ce]period[/u:42fdf921ce] for devs.
PC games cost a lot more than any console to produce (per sale) because all the money goes into getting them to work on the multiple permutations of hardware and they tend to have more staff wages =overheads.

I love my PC, but i don't like being exploited by M$ nor being forced into upgrading because i'm told that my perfectly good machine will no longer have games produced on it's 'old' OS. Because the likes of M$ say so!

Genoism(05:34 PM CEST - Aug,12 2008 )
I think your view of the gaming industry is very skewed and hardly on factual reasons but rather on merely what you suspect.

I don't need to have anyone tell me "Piracy is what they" I've worked in the game industry and that is as far from the truth as it can get. Why do they produce another game? Because they had the majority of the content done. Even if the piracy rates for the expansion would be the same at least the $$$ investment would be FAR less, so it was likely that they might even have a little profit...might...

Back in the DOS days it was a very different world, you might find it hard to believe but people had respect for the games request to not give to other people. Not everyone, but on a far greater degree then today. Most people never even had the concept of piracy in their minds yet. The amount of money you made from games was also quite insignificant compared to today so no one really cared if a small percentage of your game was pirated, you knew it'd happen but you'd NEVER have thought it'd be as bad as today.

You seem to think that "PC is a cash-cow'' for game companies when its hardly anything but. The game devs don't make money when u buy a new vid card or upgrade anything in general, the pc hardware makers do. Sometimes u might see a game packaged with a video card and in that case the devs make a small % of the money but thats uncommon.

All in all, you WOULD see games with far better quality for the PC if the devs knew every copy they sold they would actually make cash off of. But I promise you, you will not find a SINGLE game dev that thinks piracy is ok and that it doesn't hurt game devs. Sure you'll still have crap games but you know what, no one is making u buy them. Just because I think my neighbors car for sale sucks doesn't make it ok to steal it because 'its not like I'm gonna buy it'.

Stumpus> Piracy is what they want you to believe!

That's what i already said in my post previously.
Gamers had a helluva lot more respect than todays 'digital download generation'. Hell most of them would cock their heads at you when you told them you bought records from a brick and mortar shop!
I bought all these titles on shareware, then bought full copies: Rise of The Triads, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D.
Oh you are soooo wrong about PC sales back then in DOS days! In the UK the prices of games were the same price as a new PS3/XBox360 title retail today, £40-49. Even Megadrive titles -before a PC was even a games machine in most eyes, games were up to £50.
Money was made, you bet
As i said, todays 'gamers' (loosely put) will sell their own mother for a buck. The respect has gone -and so has mine for the cash-cow machine!
If this machine (which has probably a billion user data-base, worldwide) wants it back, then it has to start producing graphics cards and CPUs that are within todays budgets.
Since it's (supposedly) the biggest games platform in the world, then why does it rip owners off by artificialy inflating prices on hardware? Since it's (supposedly, again!) got the biggest gamers, then surely if it has a huge turnover it can reduce prices on Cards and CPUs, since they never last longer than 6months before being well and truly superceded.
It all makes REAL sense -oh yes i've been in this 'game' for a long time too as both builder/custom builder and owner of nigh on a dozen systems ( i still own DOS6.22/Win3.11 systems with the FIRST 3D graphics cards produced : Diamond Monster 3D and Matrox Mystique 4mb, bundled with, Mech Warrior 2
Destruction Derby 2
Scorched Planet
Patches were released for the likes of Tomb raider 3DFX & shadow warrior)
Istead of ripping the PC gamer off and killing the machine slowly off, they need to get their fingers out and reduce prices. Of course this will not happen as it's a case of "get the most out of them before the bubble bursts".
LCD TVs, Cars, MP3s, Laptops, HDDs and good ol' PCs bought in shops are as cheap and disposable as they have ever been -except graphic cards and CPUs.
Sorry, but your not on the same level as most people.
a top end graphics card/CPU does NOT hold it's value and therefore does not justify it's price. Your lucky to see 8 new games that will harness any of it's features before being replaced.
The PC is money driven -not gamer driven- obviously.
The Consoles: PS3/XBox are cheap as hell and are therefore TRUE gamer machines. Face up to it, one basic game on console sells so many copies that it's just a pipe dream for a PC.
Search ANY figures for the facts online.
Today everyone is feeling the pinch through gas/fuel/food prices, it's rather silly to think the PC is a games machine when it's priced (hardware wise) like it's a LUXURY to own one for games.
Think about it.
