Friday Reading - Why PC Gaming's Gaining Steam - briefly
(hx) 10:42 AM CET - Mar,07 2008 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Q&A: Valve Explains Why PC Gaming's Gaining Steam - According to Lombardi, Steam has seen year-over-year growth of 150 percent, with an install base now in excess of 15 million accounts
  • Alien Arena 2008 Released (free-game) - COR Entertainment announces the release of Alien Arena 2008, their freeware OpenSource first-person shooter follow-up. The Windows and Linux editions are available now, while the Mac OS X version is due in about a week.
  • Arctic Stud Poker Run Updated Demo - Got Game Entertainment has released an updated demo of Arctic Stud Poker Run, the combat-racing poker dealie, which is now available for online purchase.
  • InstantAction Instant Beta - The InstantAction Blog has word that open beta testing of InstantAction. That means anyone who signs up to beta test the new venture will now instantly be able to play the selection of four games available in the beta test. The Tribes-like first/third person shooter Fallen Empire: Legions is slated to join the InstantAction.com beta in the near future. Well. I'm interested to see how these web-based games turn out.
  • New ETQW Linux Beta v1.5 - This is an incremental update that requires version 1.4 to already be installed. The 1.5 BETA Issues forum is where to discuss the beta.
  • Crysis Issues & Workarounds - Crymod Modding Portal has a list of known issues and workarounds with the just-released version 1.2 patch for Crysis.
  • Frontlines for Call of Duty 4 v1.0 - Frontlines will bring 3 brand new gametypes to Call of Duty 4, plus a smart spawn protection to avoid the spawn killing that is happening in all COD4 servers around the world. Also will come with a revolutionary feature called War Server, which will transform a single server in a full War, with many different battles and a final objective to complete. This War can be completely configured and depending of the size setted [sic] could finish in one day or take years to reach the end
  • Europa Universalis III: In Nomine Announced - EU III - In Nomine (requires Napoleon's Ambition) is scheduled for a release before summer
  • Red Baron Returns - Stainless Games announces the release of Red Baron, a World War I aerial combat game developed by Stainless Games. Word is: "Red Baron is an engaging arcade flight-shooter set in World War I where the player battles numerous enemies in a vast array of levels. Dogfight against intense computer AI in single player or wage war against 7 other aspiring 'Aces' online. Take to the skies and rise through the ranks to ultimately become the 'Ace' in Red Baron's squadron."
  • More Sims 3 Info - The biggest change to The Sims 3 is that it takes place in a wide-open, constantly changing neighborhood -- a much bigger sandbox, if you will, and a much more complex simulation. The town and park you see on the cover image exist in the same seamless space as your Sims' household, and what you do outside your home now matters as much as what you do within. (Yes, previous expansion packs added out-and-about activities, but they were always separate sub-games. Here, everything's completely integrated.) The game also sees a major shift in how Sims' motives are handled: Individual meters indicating bladder and sleep-deprivation levels are replaced by a new system of discrete moods, the aim being to get players off the treadmill of fulfilling primal eat-sleep-pee-repeat requirements so they can focus more on, well, going out on the brand new town.

Anyone played that Red Baron game? That's back when dogfighting was more than blowing up some blip on the radar from 2 miles away...

I really want that to be good...but I'm also really sure it will be crap.

Someone uh, you know, borrow it, and tell us how it is. Please?

To be honest i doubt it will be very good, or even good.
The clue is the 'Red Baron 'Arcade part
Look what happened to EF2000 predecessor Eurofighter Typhoon? They stuck DID/ BAE logos on it and it was 'Incoming' by RAGE (who incidently bought DID) with space ships and a utterly rubbish scripted linear campaign  Fans of EF2000 were enraged, to put it mildly.

Want to read about the real simulation Red Baron game?

Q&A: Valve Explains Why PC Gaming's Gaining Steam

An install base is nothing, quoting 15,000,000 means jack! How many of those people are *actualy* playing on Steam still?? I played Half Life 2 on Steam then waited 4 years before i bought The Ship and then had to activate my account again.
Also, the consoles have a LARGER user base, compairing ONE game, WoW, and trying to justify PC gaming isn't dead is laughable. Sales of one PC title is probaly one tenth of a similar console title. (WoW aside as it's user base is totaly unique)
The PC has been stale for years, it doesn't do *zero* new that it hasn't done for a decade and a half -beside get more expensive for it's hardware for little return.

What has the PC done new in 20 years other than introduce 3D?
Consoles, like the DS & Wii have reinvented gaming and stimulated a HUGE social audience.

Also Valve , like MS, never look outside the US and then declare 'all's wonderfull in PC land'. The world is bleeding poor sales of PC software, but blinkered Valve and MS refuse to see it..

On the otherhand: Mario and Sonic at the Olympics
quote:
Combining the undeniable popularity of both Mario and Sonic, Sega has announced that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has sold five million copies worldwide in just over three months. The Wii and DS Game.

“With adored icons and fun game play, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has shot to the top of the sales charts and is clearly resonating with the growing audience of casual gamers that want an engaging and accessible gaming experience,” said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America.

Additionally, according to the NPD Group, the game was one of the top-ten best-selling titles in the United States - across all platforms - in the holiday sales month of December.

An incredible fun and sociable game sells MILLIONS, without hundreds and hundreds of bucks of hardware needed to play it -apart from a TV that everyone has got
