Mark Rein on Gear of War PC - interview
(hx) 05:36 PM CET - Feb,14 2007 - Post a comment / read (9)
The chaps over at TeamXbox have conducted an interview with Epic's Mark Rein. He provided a few comments, once again confirming a future PC Gears of War, the versatility of the Unreal Engine, and just how damn fun Unreal Tournament 3 happens to be :-D
Mark Rein: 'Til there's something else. (chuckles) People ask me, 'Are you going to do it on PC?' Yeah, eventually...I don't think that's any great secret that we would like to do it on PC, but for now it's a 360 game. Eventually we'll get around to a PC version. I just don't know when.

That's worked successfully for Halo. Halo was a big seller on PC long after it kind of peaked on the original Xbox, and they're doing the same thing now with Halo 2. We work at the pleasure of a publisher who thinks both of those are their platforms, so I think it's ultimately inevitable, and obviously we're a PC company.

The big challenge is to make a game that was designed solely for the console...to take advantage of every last little corner of that console, to fill every little crack and run as many threads as we could and do as much to exploit the power of that machine, and make it run well on enough PCs to be worth releasing. That's a challenge. UT will help us there, because Unreal Tournament 3 will be kind of our vanguard PC product, and it's helping us get optimization on the PC. So it's just a matter of, now, can we make Gears run on enough PCs that it's worth selling...or do we have to wait in five years until everyone has a PC that can run it?  It's inevitable, but it's just not there today.

Sounds like BS to me.

The more companies wait for the PC install base to catch up, the less people will have to catch up to. The raising of the bar is their responsibility alone. One of those chicken/egg scenarios and the devs will always have to spend their money first.

You'd think a PC company would better understand their market.

Stumpus(10:40 PM CET - Feb,14 2007 )
Bollocks! The PC can run *anything* out there today -provided you have money naturaly. (And plenty people do!)
Mark is just bullshitting because he's more than likely hedging his bets.. The truth is that the majority of PC owners couldn't give a toss about GoW and he wouldn't make anything on a PC version.
Besides, how many PC owners own an XBox anyway?? It is after all a PC Lol and would have bought GoW *if* they wanted it?
Now how many console games that got released on PC were major sellers?
Er Halo1 and mmm... Halo1 is about it.

It's the other way around if anything; PC to console that are the big sellers.

It's sad and it's greedy :protest:

Stumpus> It's the other way around if anything; PC to console that are the big sellers.

Yeah that would work like a charm. But theres that piracy thing.

heretic(02:37 PM CET - Feb,15 2007 )
Well, Mark's company got paid lots of money to make it an Xbox 360 exclusive and he needs to keep his mouth shut about that. Furthermore when it comes out on PC it will be a Vista Direct x 10 only I bet.

Obviously, neither Epic nor MS care about PC gamers.

Just another pointless 'who cares?' interview... but...

Here you go again claiming things you can't possibly backup and actually as you state, Bullocks! I for one wouldn't mind to see and perhaps would be interested in GOW IF it was available for PC as would lots of others who don't own an Xbox 360. Next you go off with how many PC owners have a Xbox anyhow.. Actually probably lots if not most would have an Xbox. A true gamer would have literally all solutions, not just one.

I'm not gonna argue with the console to PC crap, we all know they usually 'now' make for console and port to PC in 'most' all cases. There also is/was good ports but I'm not going to waste my time listing them...

Stumpus(05:32 PM CET - Feb,15 2007 )
Oops a bit hasty on the 'trigger' there xxxx.
This is what i said;

Sarcastic statement if you read it properly.
Here's the breakdown for you:
'The XBox is after all a PC' Soooo what i said was thus. A PC owner will generaly have an Xbox for eg Soooo will have bought GoW anyway Sooo wouldn't be realy wanting GoW for the PC unless it had complete new content and not a port :)

You said:

And i just said all of that in my original post and have idioticaly respelt it out for you!
Pay attention xxxx [-X

For a 43 year old you type like a kid with literally no education.

(sic) usually means Sarcasm Included. Get with the program!

Your clarification doesn't even come close to what you originally wrote.

Pay attention yourself.

Stumpus(09:09 PM CET - Feb,15 2007 )
What the hell was that all about?!?!?
Look xxxx take a chill-pill or something eh?
I expected to check here and you to have posted 'Lol' or something like that? You know, actualy seen the 'funny side' for once in your life? Obviously been on the defensive far too much in your life mate....

Why should i post that it's meant to be 'sarcastic' ?????? You can't actualy see what i wrote!? Do people always have to use emoticons for **EVERYTHING** on the net, or people 'jump on you' and assume the worst without any benefit of doubt and jump to conclusions?
No, only here do i have problems with people who can't read posts correctly.
There's enough grammar, AND humour, in that post i wrote for a decent enough educated kid to have understood what i implied?...gee whiz xxxx realy..

Who's problem is that? Certainly isn't mine
You seriously need to lighten up.

Oh and i don't know where you get (sic) meaning sarcasm included......because...it doesn't.
It is usualy used for quote:
to indicate that an incorrect or unusual spelling, phrase, punctuation, and/or other preceding quoted material is a verbatim reproduction of the quoted original and is not a transcription error.

Or :
quote:
adverb (after a copied or quoted word that appears odd or wrong) written exactly as it stands in the original.

What were you saying about?
quote:
For a 43 year old you type like a kid with literally no education.

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" certainly applies to what you just said.
I would Use the internet before trying to be smart next time ;)
Oh and even i knew what (sic) was for.
Me that had 'literally no education'

Come on laugh it's funny!!

So you going to lighten up for 2007 and laugh and joke with us here or is it going to be 'same old grumpy xxxx'?
8)
