The PS3 Launches In Japan - briefly
(hx) 06:14 PM CET - Nov,11 2006 - Post a comment
The PS3 debuts to long lines in Japan today, and many who were waiting for the system were happy when they received one:
Throngs of people lined up for hours around Bic Camera, an electronics retailer in downtown Tokyo, to get their hands on one of the consoles. The enthusiasm was so great, clerks with megaphones asked the crowd to stop pushing, warning that all sales would end if there were any injuries.

But would-be buyers were turned away even before the store opened at 7 a.m. The retailer refused to say how many machines it had, but said it knew it would sell out based on the length of the line around the building. Short supplies were reported elsewhere, too. Sanae Saito, a clerk at Yodobashi Camera Co. chain, said her store's stock had already sold out, although she declined to say how many machines were available. "It's all sold out with the people in line now," she said. "So many people waited in line."

Plagued with production problems, Sony Corp. has managed to ready only 100,000 PlayStation 3 machines in time for its debut in Japan. When it goes on sale in the United States on Nov. 17, some 400,000 PS3 consoles will be available there. The console's European launch has been pushed back until March.
The Japanese are also enjoying a price cut on the system compared to US prices with the 60gig HD version going for around $510 and the 20gig HD version at $420. For those of you who like to read every bit of info on a system, we have a treat for you this early morning Friday. The Playstation 3 online manual has been discovered over at the official Sony website.

In related news, Sony's Phil Harrison, the director of Sony Wolrdwide Studios, has declined to offer his guarantee that the PS3 will launch in Europe in March. Speaking to the Official Playstation Magazine, Harrison said: "Given that all of our previous statements about launching in Europe simultaneously with the US and Japan turned out not to be the case, I would not like to make any definitive statements on that."  In other news, it looks like Sony was not lying when they said users could upgrade their HDD in the PS3. A user with the 20GB PS3 has successfully upgraded to an 100GB HDD.
