Xbox 360 costs $698, says Sony 'fact sheet'
- console
(hx) 09:54 AM CEST - Oct,20 2006 -
Post a comment / read (18)
Along with announcing
the PlayStation 3's launch title lineup yesterday
, the Japanese company published
a "fact sheet"
(
*.doc format
) that compares the PS3 to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. The fact sheet says an Xbox 360 system comparable to Sony's cheapest $499 PS3 costs a staggering $698. This figure is derived from Sony's claim that the $299 Xbox 360 Core System "requires users to buy" a $100 20GB hard drive, a $199 HD DVD drive, a $50 wireless controller, and a $50 Xbox Live subscription.
Of course, none of that's actually true, because the $299 Core System doesn't "require" users to purchase any add-ons in order to play games. Furthermore, Sony apparently ignores the fact that the $399 Xbox 360 "Premium" system includes the hard drive, wireless controller, and Xbox Live subscription. Even if you add the entirely-optional HD DVD drive, the bundle's price only rises to $598 - still $100 below Sony's quoted figure.
Microsoft also confirmed
to Engadget that another Sony claim - that you need a memory unit or a hard drive to use the WiFi adapter -- is also false. You can grab a Core pack with no memory card and plug in a WiFi adapter and get on your home network. Wow, if this is really from Sony, it's fucking sad...
In related news,
Sony's Phil Harrison confirmed to1UP
that the PS1 and PS2 titles that will be available for download on the PS3. Harrison goes on to explain how the entire library of Ps1/2 games will be available but not have enhanced play on the PS3. Another bummer is how the PS1 downloads will initially be for play only on the PSP, but will later work on the PS3 when the emulation software becomes available.

No many how many times Sony thinks they can pull a Tom Cruise...I still think the PS3 will be the better value in the end. Even if it is a large nut to swallow from the start. The x360 (premium) ain't much better, but atleast that includes 3 game titles for around the same price as the PS3 (premium), without any games. But in my opinion the PS3 is more capable, plus no subscription fee. ~shrugs~

Ya I was really high on Xbox 360 but most likely I will have a PS3 the day it comes out. It seems superior to Xbox in nearly every way. Games comig look amazing. PC and video card prices are a joke and I don't care for that anymore. nVidia and ATI had a chance to get 'reasonable' prices for the vid cards but I guess their logic is, "pc gamers are so dumb, they'll pay $700 for a video card, so why should we lower prices". 20+ years later, I'm done be a foolish PC gamer. Thank you Sony, MS and Nintendo for more realistic gaming platforms.

Well i've had consoles now for nearly 3 years, apart from a handfull of titles they just have *nothing* over PC gaming, they are great for a 'fix' but far to shallow and certainly no where near as deep enough to hold my attention for long!.
I too went through the 'end of the PC' mid-life crisis at exactly that point 3years ago. Flight sims had died and i 'couldn't go on' (12years of solid PC gaming and building my own machines, man i was low..)
I bought both Sony and M$ and did some research into what are the best games to buy from the usual mags that cost a bloody fortune!
Played and went through plenty of games on both, initialy (the honeymoon period) i could play for about 4hours. Then i got over the excitement and got *seriously* sick of the lack of game save points or die and go back 1/2 hour to where the last load is... That's what kicks the arse out of consoles, Fun?! i could have thrown the bloody things MILES!! Obviously the lack of save points is because the games are
generaly
not long/good enough (i'm talking TRUE console games -not PC ports) Apart from -as i said- a few.
So i wasn't paying nearly £15 more over a PC game either -shit! 6 games on a console and i could have bought a bloody CPU upgrade or more RAM from what i saved!
No, i like my consoles, in
small
doses, but i quickly decided to upgrade every 2 years on my PC and buy second-hand console games.
Result is i save a fortune and have the best of both worlds.
Example; i bought my AMD 64 3500+ CPU, 10months ago, it cost me ( a full system build by myself) £165. The AMD 64 X2 4600+ CPU was nearly £600 back then. Now i'm getting it for £160 from Amazon! (it's last stock so i'm getting it before they discontinue; that's full retail 36month warranty with HS&F)-the result is i have a high end rig again that will play all my upcoming games, for the price of 3 XBox360 games in the UK.
The other side of them is you can't edit ZERO! Nor make levels, skin, make new models etc,etc,etc.....as you can do without so much as a thought with the PC -it's taken for granted since the days of Doom.
Consoles predominantly produce great graphics but little else, Car simulations look fantastic, BUT they don't do damage?....nope. When Carmageddon came out in 95 on the PC, it's drivers name was MAX DAMAGE -how appropriate since it invented physics and damage on a massive scale.
Consoles spend $$MILLIONS on licensing car models, or films, but that's as far as it goes. I want to see cars SMASH and have a full replay suite that you can save your films. Or have realistic flight simulations like IL-2,Falcon 4 or Massive battles that are REAL like R:TW or M:TW2.
That's never going to be a console anytime soon. How about keyboard or mouse?
The list goes on...
Internet browsing, quick FREE MP games, download FREE demos -you wont be doing that on a console without spending $$ on a magazine with them on...

So you upgraded your cpu and not your mobo? u put a 4600 939 in running with slow ram? Or did you upgrade to am2, put in 2gb of ddr2 and a new mobo? That's not the cost of 3 games. Considering AM2 costs the same as 939 counterparts, seems like a foolish waste of money to me..or you aren't telling the whole story.
Last I looked £160 = $310US. (crazy too if it's 939) oh and again, that's not the cost of 3 games.
That's a bad price too, I got a 4600 'AM2' for $269 CDN.
If you have a 939 processor, hate to tell ya, you're not high end at all. It's just a waste of money.
Crysis is going to run like the dumps on your 7600 and you will lose because of memory bandwidth and bottlenecks of your rig.

Gaming is expensive.
Computers are expensive.
Either way you look at it you are going to spend a lot of money. Hardware doesn't go obsolete tomorrow. Well in some cases, but it doesn't stop getting supported just because something better comes out. If you want top of the line, get a PS3 or X360...And be disappointed in a year or two when your current hardware is tired and can't turn out nearly as nice textures etc as a pc with (not 2 year old technolgy) can. Upgrading every 2 years is a fine, I'm going on 3 without any issue. My 6800 GT is still turning out things fairly nicely.

How can you possibly use my currency and say that it costs more in dollars?? If i buy in my country it's naturaly cheaper than buying abroad and paying tax on it  but then that's bloody obvious!
Oh and *again* to enlighten you:
quote:
Last I looked £160 = $310US. (crazy too if it's 939) oh and again, that's not the cost of 3 games.
erm in the UK XBox360 (rippoff) games can and do cost £50+ each retail -oh of course you know that since you can predict everything that users on the internet spend cash on.....now your putting words in peoples mouths xxxx to twist it around to suit you -as usual..
Since i have an ASUS A8N-E nForce 4 Ultra (fully overclockable) that supports DDR400 (PC3200) that's what i have in it. Crucial Ballistix CAS3.
You don't go dumping memory into a rig that it doesn't support, otherwise it defaults to the slower system speed or your a complete numpty and buy the wrong stuff -like you are implying i do!
quote:
Crysis is going to run like the dumps on your 7600 and you will lose because of memory bandwidth and bottlenecks of your rig
Now you are suffering from miopia OR your confused with your poor machine or putting words into peoples mouths again? Since i do not have a 7600 :cyclopsani: It's a Factory Overclocked BFG 7800GT PCI-E <sigh> which is a balls hair off of a 7800GTX erm and the only bottleneck with such a graphics card is your CPU which is why it's let loose with a dual core 4600+ The other thing is how can you be so amazing and tell me how Crysis will run on my machine since there is no demo out??????? You know that your talking shit again don't you?
Next you will be telling me that AGP cards are so slow they don't do them anymore.
Since i build my machines xxxx, i kind of now what i own and upgrade it to. Thanks for the...help and all that, but you would be better keeping your nose into your own machine and getting that up to scratch rather than telling other people what to do -especialy when your thousands of miles away and can't exactly 'pop round for a visit' so that I can enlighten you.
You do know that the XBo360 can't and WONT do DX10 games -now there's an upgrade laugh. (like a whole NEW XBox36
1
in the making)
The idea of owning a PC is to build, mod and cutomise it to YOUR specs NOT anyone elses.
You can put two **IDENTICAL** machines together BUT get two **VERY** different output figures from both of them. That is FACT.
One thing i know is my machine will play ALL the games i put at it with no problems at all, does that concern you? NO.

And of course, XXXX, the fact that one may play games on either platform, own either platform or do the ultimate heresey - own them all and play them all.
Hmmm... I was not my intent to pull that one of with... that... context. Eitherway, if you enjoy games - AT ALL - you should probably look past simplistic notions of platform fanboism and think: "Oh boy! Crysis! Maybe it's better then Farcry which blew! OH OH! Final Fantasy vs. XIII and Halo freakin three! JOY and overstimilus!" at which point one should take out all the vacation days saved since the announcement of the FFXIII series. (This could also cover the release of Supreme Commander which probably effectivly would kill my real life social life once and for all.)
The counter react to this is: "Fuck Crysis, I have me arcade games on teh Live marketplace! w00t!" (or change it to fit your choice of company and platform dedication!)
I personaly will feel like a freakin god of entertainment when I get to stuff all of the next-gen consoles under my soon to be, Sony 46XBRV2000 HD LCD tv, which is only a few meters from my desk which houses my gaming PC, my developing PC and my work laptop.
But, first things first - a bigger appartment to have my TV in.
Playing games should not be a choice of alligence of heart, soul and mind to a company. Or console "hugging" for that matter as we refer to it here in sweden.

Why on earth would you spend that kind of money on a DX9 card when DX10 is a few short months away?
If I'm going to spend a lot of money on something I usually do it when it won't become obsolete in one quarter. I know it will happen eventually, but still.
If the hype is to be believed about DX10, it will be a much more profound shift in technology than DX7 to DX8 was, or DX8 to DX9 was. There will have to be a special subsystem installed on winXP for the DX10 games to even execute, let alone perform and look thier best. Unified shaders is going to shake things up a bit.

Lovely TV Safer, my next purchase is the Sony 42" Bravia LCD HD. It's just been reviewed and it's the first LCD to blow away a plasma in performance and right across the scale.
I would love to put my consoles + PC *anywhere* near my current 32" Sony TV! The trouble is it's already got the Sony DVD player, 5.1 Yamaha Surround sound amp, Pioneer Hi-Fi,Pioneer HDD+DVD recorder, old VHS player/recorder for transfering tapes to the Pioneer for editing and a PVR/Hi Def recorder come digital receiver ALL under it!
The bedroom has PS2,XBox and 3 working games PCs from DOS6.22 dual boot Win95, to Win98 and my current rig with WinXP. And nearly 400 PC games plus all my PS2 and XBox games -yeah it's crowded

Not to be rude though Mig, but ever heard of eBay? :P
I normally sell off my previous gear privately or on eBay if and when I'm able to upgrade to a newer model, regardless of it being an individual component or an entire system; so when a DX10 card comes out, I can safely buy it knowing that there is still a market for previous generation cards, which still pack a punch money-wise.

I was acctualy at a shop that had the 42" Sony bravia screen - and the modell I mentioned, is the bigger bad brother of the series :D Full 1080p High Definition display - the mother of all... bravias... hmm
My boss, which has a preference for projectors instead is trying to convert me to the lines, but a projector has no room in my room - so to speak - not to mention that all of the m- every single one has crappy constrast and gamma compared to a screen.
Got to mention that I have old 486DX2 standing in a storage comparment (as I don't have enough room for all my stuff unpacked) with the lovely Windows 3.11 installed ;) I got the original floppies to boot lying around here, somewhere...

[to finish]
I bought a 7600 which is lower cost than yours and provided sufficient fps.
-I upgrade to AM2 because 939 is discontinued and a waste of money
-A8N while at it's time was decent, it's a mid-low range mobo.limited sata and only 1 PCI-E card.. not dual.
-DDR2-800 is nearly double the preformance of your overpriced DDR1(Ballistix, gimme a break, hello marketing for suckers). My DDR that cost less than yours performed at the same rates. Certainly not noticable.
-firewire and 8usb port, 8 sata drives(5 of which I am using)
I paid 37% more than the cost of your CPU and got a complete system that smokes my old A8NE, 3D Marks and Sisoft to prove it too. I'm never limited to just buying around town, I find the cheapest prices worldwide to buy my parts.
But lets wait for your, god of games, Crysis to come out. Cuz I look forward to hearing you gripe about your performance.
You'll be upgrading again, you're just too stupid to realize it.

What is the Difference Between Xbox 360 Models?
- So, you've finally decided to start looking at buying an Xbox 360. Good for you, there are some great games on there. Halo 3, Grant Theft Auto 4, Bioshock, Madden, the list goes on. What you might not know is that there's more than one version of the same console floating around out there, and some of them have some very significant differences. Playing DivX and Xvid content on Xbox 360
- Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gaming console is one of the most popular ever. It’s great for sitting around and playing games with friends and you can even play DVD’s and music CD’s on the console. While this isn’t terribly exciting, if you have a system that is running Windows Media Center (MCE) or Vista Ultimate Edition, you can stream Windows Media Video (WMV) movies to your 360 console over the network.

Singularity - PC, PS3, Xbox 360
- Raven have stated that Singularity's main gameplay mechanism is a device, known in the game as the TMD (Time Manipulation Device). The TMD has the ability to move a single object through time, both into the future, and into the past. It can also freeze an object in time, and has an 'Impulse' function, which can be used as a weapon once upgraded. The TMD is multifunctional, as it can be used as a powerful weapon, but also as a tool in puzzle solving scenarios. The device's use as a weapon is unconventional when compared to the weapons in other games. For instance, using the TMD's "rewind" function on a human opponent will send them into a "placental" state where they revert to an almost amoebic state, before slowly dying. The device is essential for solving puzzles, such as sending a lock forward in time, causing it to rust it in real time, or sending a broken bridge backwards in time until it returns to a usable state. Sending a tree trunk forwards in time while standing on it will cause it grow very quickly, allowing the player to reach higher areas.
