Changing the way video games are made - briefly
(hx) 11:10 PM CEST - Oct,02 2006 - Post a comment / read (2)
Today’s installment of Game Over, CNN Money's regular gaming column, is talking about episodic content, how it is perceived and its impact on traditional games sales. Here's a taster:
There are notable downsides to going episodic with video games. Players, who have been trained to expect 20 to 60 hours of gameplay per title, might reject the model, even though it's lower priced. Critics tend to penalize episodic games because of their length. And retailers don't quite know how to handle the games.

Because the average title sells for $50 or $60 these days, a new game carrying a $20 price tag can make the others seem overpriced. $20 is typically bargain bin pricing for games - and stores are still trying to figure out how to position them.

Online services like Steam and Xbox Live Marketplace, help supplement sales, but Newell said the majority of all sales still come from retailers - even on episodic content. (It's not just "Half-Life," either. Valve worked with Texas developer Ritual to distribute "SiN: Episodes - Emergence" earlier this year. A second installment is due soon.

Episodes stink. I can buy a full game in the bargain bin for $19 or less. I've actually gotten some pretty good games for $9. HL2 EP 1 as far as I was concerned was about a chick who couldn't shut up, who I'd wish died and Gordon the mute as the star player.

Sin was 'ok' nothing great, wasn't worth the money and I'm still waiting for that promised free mp addon.

i agree they do suck they take the fun out of beating a game.. 20$ for 6 or less hours of game play is a huge ripoff

ex
hl2 great game worth every penny
Half life 2 EP1 they clam 6 hours of gameplay but its less if you played halflife 2 before and know how to move.. they also rushed it and made it well.. jsut seam like a mod some kid made..

i rather have the full product that i can play and beat without having to wait 1 or 2 years for the rest of it to come out... f that
