BF 2142 Dev Diary - Playtesting the Titan - briefly
(hx) 10:54 AM CEST - Jul,08 2006 - Post a comment
PC.IGN now offers BF 2142 Developer Diary penned by James Salt, the Lead Designer on the game, who discusses the game's new Titan Mode. Here's an excerpt:
Testing a game can be a lot of fun. You often find that small ideas can often grow into something much bigger. In Battlefield 2142, Launch Pods started out as a fun solution to a problem. In the end, they have introduced a whole new strategy to assault the Missile Silos on the map. The Silos are Stationary Anti-Titan missile systems. Much like how conventional Stationary AA evolved to provide air cover against enemy jets, these missiles evolved to fight off the new Titan threat. In current playtests we commonly use launch pods to launch an airborne assault on a Silo. As the soldier making the assault, it's quite a rush to get launched 50 meters into the air, steer yourself down to your target area and leap out of your pod to take on any defenders. From the defenders' point of view, there is this feeling of anticipation as you see these vapour trails stream down and you find yourself trying to predict where they will land so you can get off the first shot.

Play-testing the Titan interior fights have been one of the most intense experiences for me so far. As a defender, you have a real "This is it!, it's make or break" feel. It's not just some flag you can lose. If the enemy gets through to your core, your Titan goes down in flames. You lose. For the assaulting team, the kit customisation system has introduced some new gameplay as well. Equipping the best possible squads to make the assault is critical.

Currently, our best strategy is for the Squad Leader to place down their Squad Leader Beacon on the Titan so you can quickly re-spawn to that location. You move through the corridors watching each others' backs for enemy defenders, while heading for the first consoles. You'll need a Support player with you to place down Stationary Defence Guns that will watch the corners, and a Recon player using Optical Camouflage to surprise the defenders. Don't forget, you'll also need a fully medic equipped Assault player to revive anyone that gets on the wrong side of some bullets.
