This week on DVD we have Robots, Family Guy Presents: Stewie Griffin the Untold Story, Lords of Dogtown and Evil Dead 2: Book of the Dead Limited Edition

Here's some stuff:
  • Is the PC Dead for Gamers? - Who has the better gaming console, Windows versus the consoles? Don't count Windows completely out yet.
  • Russian pirate DVD factories reported on government sites - Millions of pirated DVDs, CDs and CD-ROMs are being produced at factories on secret Russian facilities. "Some of the counterfeit production is being made in commercial structures installed in secret and top-secret facilities, the Russian Interior Ministry said according to a report in The Times of London Thursday.
  • Microsoft AntiSpyware vs Messenger Plus! Round 2 - KO - In the spyware definitions of August, the latest definitions for Microsoft AntiSpyware detected the actual Messenger Plus exe as Spyware. This caused a big debate over whether Microsoft should be detecting MsgPlus as spyware or the optional C2 LOP spyware bundled with the application's installer. Neowin is reporting that the latest definitions on 23rd September have addressed this issue.
  • IIS 7 Short Overview Video - In this video, Chris Adams, IIS Program Manager, talks about what you can expect for the up coming IIS 7.
  • LimeWire Works to Block Unlicensed Material - The recent court ruling puts LimeWire in an unfortunate situation. The Supreme Court ruled those who 'actively induce' copyright infringement can be held liable. LimeWire never 'actively induced' anyone - as it was always more of a research and development client than anything else. To chill a research client such as LimeWire may help expose the RIAA's seemingly unfettered access to taunt and bully P2P developers into submission. (Note: Take a look at Shareaza at sourceforge.net (and the just-released v2.2). Free, OSS, and supports Gnutella, Gnutella2, and eDonkey networks. Also supports the Bittorrent protocol)
  • Useful Sony PSP Hack: PDF Reader For Sony PSP - An anonymous programmer published a PDF file reader for the Sony PSP with source code.  PSPPDF is still pretty simplistic, but the base functionality of displaying text from a PDF file on the Sony PSP is working.
  • Switchfoot apologises for albums copy protection - Popular beat combo Switchfoot has apologised to its fans after Sony released its latest album with content protection.
  • Google uses Code Jam as job interview - Polish university student Marek Cygan has won this year's Google Code Jam ($10.000), the annual programming contest held last Friday at the California headquarters of the search firm. The programmers had 75 minutes to create a solution for three problems, followed by a 10-minute final round. Contestants were allowed to use the Java, C++, C# or VB.NET programming languages.
  • Home users to get 24MB broadband - Swedish ISP Be has launched the UK's fastest broadband service for home users. Be Home 24Meg costs £24 per month and offers an uncapped 24MB internet-only connection. It is currently available in London and will be rolled out to 20 other cities over the next year.
  • GPS modernization begins with Delta rocket launch -  Boeing Delta 2 booster pierced the night sky Sunday evening, successfully launching the first modernized Global Positioning System satellite to build a bridge from the navigation network of today to the advancements of tomorrow.
  • Oregon Scientific Weather Station - It taps into a Cable Free Weather Station, displaying a lovely weather map on a 3.8" color LCD display. Internal features include Barometric Pressure measurement, Max/Min temperature and humidity memories and a Temperature and Humidity trend indicator.
  • TokyoFlash Equalizer Watch reviewed  - Here's a review of the bizarre-looking High Frequency Equalizer wristwatch that's been bouncing around for a while.
  • FOMA SA700iS GPS by SANYO - It has a GPS Moving Map, 1.3MP camera, 2.2" QVGA screen, MiniSD slot and (a tiny) 8Mb of internal storage capacity. The phone measures 101x51x25mm for 117g. Needless to say that it can be connected to a PC and it also has the PicBridge function to be connected to a printer.
Reviews: Age of Empires III Demo / Day of Defeat Source / Myst V: End of Ages (87%) / GT Legends (8/10) / Jetfighter 2015 (76%) / Serious Sam 2 Demo / The Sims 2: Nightlife (7.3/10) / Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault (4.5/5)

Previews: Day of Defeat: Source (impressions and comparison screenshots) / Rome: Total War - Barbarian Invasion

Media: Blood Magic GC video, F.E.A.R. game weapons movie, Revolution Controller Video

Mods/Tools: Ballistic Weapons UT2004 v1.00 / RakNet 2.4 / Sands of War 2 Beta 1 (HL2)

Other gaming news:
  • Gears of War Interview - During our visit to Tokyo Jeff from Xboxyde, Hannes from Livegamers and Rob from msxbox-world.com had the unique opportunity to talk to Cliff Bleszinski the lead designer working on Gears of War and Mark Rein the Vice President at Epic.
  • Day of Defeat: Source coming today - Day of Defeat: Source will be available later today at 3 pm PDT. For those who have not yet pre-purchased the game, the 10% pre-purchase discount offer ends when it is released. In addition to pre-loading DoD: Source, another good thing to do in preparation of its release is to update your video card driver. With HDR and other advanced features included, DoD: Source pushes the limits of the Source engine a bit harder than other Source games. Check over at NVIDIA or ATI website for driver updates, depending on your hardware.
  • The Suffering: Ties That Bind ships- Midway Games sent out a press release announcing that The Suffering: Ties That Bind has shipped to retailers nationwide. The game is available now for the PC, PS2, Xbox.

As long as PCs have Mouse+Keyboards, and as long as the consoles have "n00bsticks", PCs will never be dead for gamers :D. There's a hundred other reasons too but they're too obvious to mention ;P.

By the way, don't you just love theese gamer-formated "sensationalistic" headlines? :D :-&

Sabot(07:20 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
The trouble is the PS3 *WILL* have keyboard and mouse control in games!

http://www.sony-ps3-news.com/index.php?/archives/71-PS3-To-Feature-Keyboard-and-Mouse-Support.html

So what were you saying

lmer(08:19 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
Let's look at that from a bright side; i'm hoping all those casual gamers because of which we are offered plug'n'play no brainer games are to learn something by using a complex tool such as a keyboard. :>

PC Gamming will never die!

Nosferatu(08:47 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
Never will the PC gaming see its end (at least as long as the PC is called PC).
Just too many reasons for it to stay alive. No use to count them.

Apathy Curve(09:59 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
Whatever.

Doomsayers have been projecting the death of PC gaming for 20 years. It hasn't happened yet, and it won't happen. Console games are targeted toward a less sophisticated market; it's how they make their money.

As for the PS3 keyboard, I've heard that song and dance before. From Mattel, in the early 1980's. Never did see anything other than a promotional photo of it.

Fact is, by the time the PS3 debuts, computers will be faster, better, and stronger. You can't design, build and market a packaged gaming console fast enough to outrun Moore's Law. It's a completely separate market, despite the best efforts of greedy developers to shovel console crappiness onto the PC in the form of half-baked ports.

Consoles simply can't hold a candle to PCs in power, precision, or versatility. And they never will, because if they catch up in all three of those areas, they've become PCs!

xxxx(10:28 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
And what you all miss is COST. Not everyone is up for spending $600 all the time for a new video card on a yearly basis. I think none of you read that article or just made what you want to believe out of it. Fact is, a console costs significantly less than PC's. Learning curve is WAY shorter for a console and now the gfx in consoles almost surpasses that of PC. And don't start going, BS BS BS I can run my games at 1600x1200. GOOD for U... Too bad others aren't that retarded. Just cuz you can run a game at 1600x1200 doesn't substantiate the worth of a PC. PC is a money crazy market, gouging everywhere. ATI and nVidia are gouging us to our titties. Then look at the mobo and cpu? Intel charges nuts prices and AMD is not far off. PC's are a joke in terms of cost. As for keyboards, actually PS3 and Xbox 360 will have keyboards and mouse. Or so they claimed. At least I know from a friends who's hard-core Xbox 360 fanboy says it's an available option and you can cruise the net with an Xbox. Until video cards, new video cards, come down in purchase price. A console is going to appeal to new gamers more than a PC. Take a look at some of those games coming for Xbox, sorry but it blows PC away totally. I like that though, there are so many reasons PC's will continue but I wont count.. Pff... Ya there's a great arguement.. hahahaha!

Sabot(11:09 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
xxxx has hit the nail on the head.
When you've been in this 'song and 'dance' called PC upgrading for 12years like i have and others, you quickly tire of throwing yearly Thousands of $$££ at it.
Your a MUG to say otherwise!
A keyboard and mouse *doesn't* make a PC any different from a console, those that think it does are being totaly annal
The XBox360 and PS3 will look superb on 42" HDTV -especialy with a load of mates and lots of beer -try that with a PC!

I'm quite happy to have ALL consoles in my life -apart from the GC, but's that's because of my age.

I'll tell you guys something though, PC games *HAVE* died. There's buggerall any decent flight sims made anymore -oh apart from MSFS and Oleg, but there was over a DOZEN 10years ago.
Quality of PC games are crap also now. Monkey Island,Sam & Max,Simon the Sorceror,Myst and Day of the Tentacle are classics that have never been superceded.
What about FULL sized PC boxes that **ACTUALY** contained a manual??? Not something that contained enough sheets to blow your nose in....
"consoles aimed at a less sophisticated market" what sort of pathetic darkened room did you find that statement? The last i looked (today) was that most folk at my work inc my manager had a console that they played. yep even guys into their 40s play consoles. You need to get your head out your egotisical black hole and open your eyes!

Yep some of you guys don't know nothing.

lmer(11:58 PM CEST - Sep,26 2005 )
Ditto Apathy Curve. I just don't see it happening.

Rasded(12:36 AM CEST - Sep,27 2005 )
The only reason to get rid of PC gaming is to try to cut down on Game Piracy..Also..kill PC gaming what the hell would you want a PC for? I think Allot of companies are interested in this idea..Lets just hope it never happens. Not that I pirate games or anything (cough cough) I just cant see a world withought PC gaming..Who wants to sit in front of there TV with a mouse and keyboard..OKAY I will if its good.

nb411(02:34 AM CEST - Sep,27 2005 )
@Stumpus

I hate it when oldskool gamers bitch about having a manual and the full sized box and how wonderful it was. The fact of the matter is that most games still come with a paper manual included or if not it's in the from of a .pdf. Somewhere along the line you forgot to consider the environmental impact of having full size cardboard boxes of emptiness and big thick manuals that could just as easily be read onscreen (because lets face it, no one reads a chunky manual cover to cover). I am glad they have essentially reduced waste in packaging and while I understand it's not going to change the world, every bit counts.

I think you have also misunderstood the "consoles aimed at a less sophisticated market" comment. This means that console gamers are generally looking for simplicity in both gameplay and setup. This may not be true for you but it most definately is for the majority of console gamers. And the majority of console gamers are casual gamers. As a console gamer you don't need to know how to install the game, or set the optimal resolution or make decisions about which video card best suits your gaming needs. You just turn it on, and you play.

Just because your manager plays halo once a week and some other guy you know likes burnout 3 and they happen to be older, absolutely and in no way proves that they are sophisticated gamers. What a dumb thing to say. Their worth as human beings are not in question so there's no need to get defensive.

xxxx(06:05 AM CEST - Sep,27 2005 )
I see less fags that hack games on consoles. That alone is reason to go. Pfff, look at HL1 and HL2.. hacked and always hacked. Who needs it. Hey and you know what, an xbox 360 would be great with my 7.1 THX/DTS certified Pioneer System and 42" WD HDTV. Anyone see NHL 2006 for PC? Looks like complete shit compared to console. PC just don't matter much anymore.

lucas(12:13 PM CEST - Sep,27 2005 )
Rasded> kill PC gaming what the hell would you want a PC for?
lets play "spot the 12 year old"

djdidge(12:49 PM CEST - Sep,27 2005 )
I feel I have to comment....

Having seen my lan party crew dwindle to practically zero I have questioned my alleigance to the PC (for .68 seconds, which is an eternity for an android!)

Sure PCs cost more to stay top line, but in a few years when the XBOX360 and PS3 are still young in console terms, a new budget PC will easily compete, and ofcourse those paying a premium for a top of the line beast in two years will have the most powerful gaming machines available to the consumer market.

Consoles have their use and appeal, sociabilty is important as someone said, they are good when you have a load of mates round. Particuarly good for driving and fighting games, but as seasoned PC gamers will agree- poor for FPS. Hands up who has visited a friend and they have tried to get you to play unreal tournament on the XBOX (or something similar)...its like "erm, narr ill just watch you jostle with that controller!"

We could chat on this subject for ages but in answer to the question "Is the PC dead for gamers", I doubt it, and hope as much.

Anyone downloading games, remember to buy if you like, thats how you can keep this market afloat.

It also works both ways  Ever tried getting a console friend to get their fingers around a keyboard and mouse in a FPS! ROFL.
More and more devs are doing 'cross platforms', purely and simply it's to make money!
The PC is a loss making machine, why do you think devs are trying to impliment 'STEAM' type downloads? Piracy has/is killed the PC. Compare the price of a console game in the high street to a PC game. it's way,way more expensive *yet* the console game sells THOUSANDS more per title than the PC ever will.
Get over it guys, the PC is no longer a niche market.
Every game on PC will eventualy (as already is) be released simultaneously on the big consoles.
The PC is only ahead because of graphics power. but the cost of a 'top of the range' graphics card will be nearly twice the cost of the latest consoles released...
If i had a dime for everyone here and over the past 12years that said that the PC is NOT dying, i would be a millionare!!
Me and only 2 other mates have stayed the course in over a decade upgrading our PCs. The rest have gone on to consoles, marriage, have kids, longer jobs etc, etc.
Me i AM married and my wife has a PC also, so it's not such a big deal.
Wait and see the amount of you lot that eat your words in a few years time....'PC isn't dead'

Nosferatu(07:19 PM CEST - Sep,27 2005 )
Xxxx, what you were laughing about wasn't an argument and until I read your comment I thought that was obvious even to a child. If I wanted to give arguments, I'd give them. You don't write ONLY arguments in the comments section, right? :)
And heh, most of you guys become so agressive about trifles, I even wonder.

What I mean is that FPS require keyb&mouse for perfection, nobody that knows FPS can deny that. The best console FPS gamer vs the best PC FPS gamer with their traditional controller... the PC gamer will always wipe the floor no contest. But not to dwell too much on controllers, console controllers are indeed better suited to other things.

On the main topic, PCs will always be gaming platforms those that are convinced otherwise will indeed see in a few years!

If you havent already, read the TomsHardware link provided by HX... They are on the money with that...

You can't count, so why try and pull the wool over everyone eyes? You can't contribute cuz u know shit about the PC. That's why your post is so retarded. Why you even bother to post is beyond me?!

I think I'm gonna put that in my sig. Nosferatu> Never will the PC gaming see its end (at least as long as the PC is called PC).

That's just total genius at work.. Duh! watch your step people.

And the 'a child could understand' line u use is so f'ing old it's totally stupid to see anyone still uses that as their basis to put someone down. Get a life dude, get some new quotes!

Here's a pic of Nosferatu @ his Birthday party!

You know xxxx, I see you like insulting people, even though there is no reason to do so. I'd classify you as a kid or a person with inferiority complex, because you try to show your knowledge is superior to someone's even though you don't know a person. About the 'child' phrase, I can't know how old is the expression, because I made a cliche from my language.
Heh, you just make me laugh xxxx. If the PC gaming doesn't suit those who you know, it doesn't mean there aren't people who don't like console games for a good amount of reasons.
Why wouldn't I count the reasons? Simple: it's a comment section, not for writing pages of text.
Oh, and don't forget to inform me and put to shame when PC gaming will at last die. I'd be very thankful.

I'll give ya a few tips.
A) first know what you are talking about. Put it in english not baby talk.
B) Comments are attached to a FORUM, what is a FORUM's purpose?
C) Where in 'your' world is a 'comment' restricted to so many words? Huh? I didn't know comments had a restriction on words.

My points are factual, my post does bring up relevant data. You have no clue, that's obvious since the first days I've seen ur posts. Either your posts are stupid or totally unfounded. It's only common sense that someone who wants to get into games is more likely "these days" to go for a console. It's WAY cheaper and it WAY easier to use. Not to mention the COST is WAY lower. Are you too stupid to understand that? I guess so, cuz you keep on posting back with even more stupid and pointless comments. You say not to attack me yet your an idiot trying to use "age" to put someone down. Pfff.

You show me where I am wrong in ANY of my post. You keep playing your way to old "age" insult game, if that's all you got. Stumpus and I are about the only one who post on this site that have a clue, outside of HX.

lmer(07:02 PM CEST - Sep,28 2005 )
xxxx, one day when you grow up this behaviour of yours will bounce back at you. I only wish i can be there when it happens to laugh in your face. Take a chill pill kid. Theres more in life than being right about console facts.

Nosferatu(08:37 PM CEST - Sep,28 2005 )
xxxx: "my post does bring up relevant data"
Wow, your insults are right on the "will computer games die?" topic, they are absolutely relevant, your insults give exact arguments on the reasons of consoles being "better in every aspect"... your logic is undeniable :)
Notice I never even allowed myself to insult you, while you certainly did.
Life will sure punish you for being who you are. Imer's right.
You'd better rearrange a few things in the way you react to other people, it'll be too hard to be like that, trust me. I've seen people of your kind change. They have more friends, others approve of their actions, they get more satisfaction from their life. The choise is yours of course, whether to follow the advice or...
Well, could have spent more time arguing with you, but I guess there are better ways to spend it.

The Outlaw(08:51 PM CEST - Sep,28 2005 )
First of all anyone who says "PC gaming is dead" is stupid..... it is never gonna die. Consoles are no where better than PC's and far as the controls go it depends on the individual as to what he prefers, some ppl like the console's control and some like PC. Well I hate the Console controls, but that does not make them bad or good, it just comes down to what you are comfortable with.

Secondly when u say cost, that is another stupid thing to argue on. U can always upgrade ur PC but u can never upgrade ur console. If u want to run ur latest console games u got to dump the stupid old console and buy a new one. So u can't argue about cost either.

And when we talk about sophistication consoles are for ppl who are not into hardcore gaming, its more for KIDS. Everybody knows and will agree that consoles have been mostly used for fighting games. PC is certainly for the sophisticated gamer.

And managers playing games does not make consoles sophisticated it PROVES that noobies play on consoles.

lucas(07:45 AM CEST - Sep,29 2005 )
The Outlaw> Secondly when u say cost, that is another stupid thing to argue on. U can always upgrade ur PC but u can never upgrade ur console. If u want to run ur latest console games u got to dump the stupid old console and buy a new one. So u can't argue about cost either.
thats the most retarded thing i've read here yet. sure, you can upgrade you pc, thats all good and true. but look at the price of a gfx card or a cpu, then compare that price to the total cost of a console. notice the numbers are in the same range? so to upgrade one part of your precious pc costs at much an a whole new console, wonderful. but then, futhermore when you buy a console you get 3-5 years where the console will play any game released, that gfx card you just blew all that money on will start to struggle in <2 years, so in the time i buy one console, you're gonna need to do 2-3 upgrades to stay current.
consoles:1 pcs:0

The Outlaw> And when we talk about sophistication consoles are for ppl who are not into hardcore gaming, its more for KIDS. Everybody knows and will agree that consoles have been mostly used for fighting games. PC is certainly for the sophisticated gamer.
i love this arguement since its so ironic. the people who make these claims are always teens trying to prove they're "adults", 'look at me! i use a pc, consoles are for kids!' I bet you hated on gamecube zelda cause it was to kiddie too, while adults rejoiced in having such a pretty game to play. one day you'll reach a point where you realise the time (those upgrades and software installations dont perform themselves) and money involved in pc gaming isnt worth it, its not about being kid-like or adult-like; its about "my time is too valuable to fuck around with this shit". right now i can assure you yours is not, have fun while that lasts.

The Outlaw(05:04 PM CEST - Sep,29 2005 )
You can comment as much as you want or argue till the end of time. Still that will not change the fact that PC gaming will never die.

Rest u Kids and argue as much as you want.
