Far Cry AMD64 / WinXP Pro x64 patch - patch
(hx) 04:38 PM EDT - May,10 2005 - Post a comment / read (2)
Ubi Soft has released an AMD64 / WinXP Pro x64 upgrade (local US mirror ~ 486MB) for Far Cry along with an "exclusive content" add-on (local US mirror ~ 422MB) for the tropical island first-person shooter by Crytek Studios. Word is: "The AMD64 upgrades of Far Cry are meant to run on the final released version of the new Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. If you are running a Beta version of this software, we cannot insure compatibility. Please note that the goal of the AMD64 upgrades is to transform the 32-bit version of the game into a 64-bit version of the game to be played on the Windows XP Pro x64 Edition OS."  The content pack features improved textures, increases view distance and detail, and adds two new multiplayer maps. The chaps over at Anand Tech take a look at the performance, as well as the visual difference:
For the most part, 32-bit games run at the same speed or slightly slower under x64 Edition compared to 32-bit Windows XP Professional. And from what we've seen with titles that have native 64-bit binaries (e.g. Chronicles of Riddick), there aren't any real performance gains to be had there either. In order to find out if Far Cry was any different, we looked at two separate platforms: an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ and an Intel Pentium D 3.2GHz. All benchmarks were conducted with an ATI Radeon X850 XT and at 1024x768 with Very High quality settings enabled.

We compared performance under 32-bit Windows XP, as well as x64 Edition, while running both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Far Cry under the latter. We used our standard Far Cry demo that we've used in all other reviews, and in order to isolate the performance differences from the extra content, we only looked at performance changes with the first 64-bit patch installed - not the Exclusive Content Update.

I'm sorry but who gives a $hit. This game is the biggest overrated POS out there. Nobody plays it, mp is an embarassment to say the least. Sure single player was 'ok'. But the game itself sucks. I've tried to get into this game(yes, i was dumb and bought it like a sucker long ago) for a long time and I just can't. It's so bad in MP it's laughable. And holy crap, I got an Audigy 2 and the sound in Farcry is just the pits!! It's got to win an award for the worst sound in any game. I digital 6.1 speakers. There's no shortage of quality in my sound system so there is no reason this games sound isn't any better.

I'll say one thing, in my store now. They are selling Farcry for $19. That's a fair and honest price for it now. Wish I paid that.

I didnt think it was *quite* that bad. The patches make it a bit more playable, and its quite fun on LAN. Looks pretty aswell :)
