S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl Info - briefly
(hx) 06:06 PM CEST - Apr,25 2004 - Post a comment / read (13)
The German print-magazine GameStar had S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl as its cover-story just shortly before the E3 2004. Here are interesting news and facts:
- The Sovjet Union still exists in the game.
- Andrew Prokhorov: "The explosion is just one of the reasons why animals and humans are mutating, gruesome experiments by the military are also responsible for this."
- The 30 km² Zone is divided into 18 sectors (because of performance issues) each of which varying 0.7 to 2 km².
- There will be 36 main quests and virtually an unlimited number of randomly generated quests.
- A situation GameStar experienced regarding the A.I.: While being chased by two enemies in a building they ran to an upper floor. The two enemies followed them. Reaching the floor, GameStar had to jump from a wall onto the ground because there was no other way out. One of the NPC stalkers noticed this and started to shoot at the editors and distract them while the other NPC stalker ran down the stairs again to the first floor to catch the editors and shoot from that position.
- In main quests there will be a "scripted" path of actions, Andrew explains: "In one of the missions you have to infiltrate the stalker-base. To simulate a regular camp life we use scripts. However, as soon as you trigger the alarm the combat AI appears and your enemies act from now on independently."
- DirectX 9 is to be shown at E3.
- Glass of windows does not only burst, but single shards can be shot out, too. Shooting in closed rooms can be dangerous because of ricochets which can hurt the player. Different types of ammunitions have different effects.
- Currently one day in the game equals to three hours in real life.
- Besides gravitaional anomalies there will be ones with electrostatic discharges and deadly plants (just to name a few of course).
- GSC will make sure that if fuel of your vehicle should be empty, the walk to the next vehicle won't last too long.
- THQ plans a multiplayer beta test with 50,000 people a few months before release.
- Though GSC has still planned Sept. 2004, GameStar estimates the release to be Middle of 2005.

Sounds cool indeed. But 2005? Rats. Just goes to show that if you're doing something original and complex, you can't spit out a game the way, say, Epic does its UT clones.

at ut99-ut2003 (5yrs) intervals? :P

Games are getting larger and more complex, so naturally it takes longer & becomes more expensive to produce them.

Heh, Coyote, try this: Unreal (1998). UT (1999). Unreal Championship (2002). UT 2003. Unreal 2 (2003). UT 2004. Bing-bang-bam. Games that, while fun for what they are, can be rolled out on an assembly line like Yugos. ;-)

Middle of 2005.. man these developers are all turning me right off. I'm so sick of the F'ing lying!! If you don't know when your F'ing game is coming out quit giving G'dmn estimates! Turns me so completely off. I already don't give a $hit about HL2.. now I'm starting to get totally turned off STALKER. Want to advertise your games? give screens, give movies just don't lie about game release times. Gabe the dickhead of Valve hasn't learned this lesson at all, so many people want to punch that bastard right in the face! I honestly have been looking forward to STALKER, but 1 year from now? I don't even know if I'll be gaming anywhere close to how long I am now, and now, I only have a few hours a night..

Tom, settle down. When making computer games, developers run into unexpected problems that need to be fixed. Its called game polishing. Oh yeah and by the way Face Off mod was in PCgamer and youre team has won 3000 dollars in prize money for coming second.

Hi Jared.. ya but when you actually talk to the developers from the game(STALKER) and they tell you "this" year and then you read, "next" year. Arggghhh. But ya for Faceoff, it did win but unfortunately the majority of the team did not get the prize cuz Hegi is a dipstick and screwed us all out of it, thus the reason all the dev's jumped ship, including me and I also provided him with a Official Gamesite(doh). Faceoff is GameOver and was only made by Hegi to win some money(sad but true).. We are deciding ourselves, the leftover of the team to do another mod using UT2k4 and the vehicles of course, but the death of Faceoff was pretty stressful on all of us. I'm currently doing other projects right now, but if there is enough interest I might just spearhead another mod for UT2k4. The reason that these games are all being 'delayed' is likely because of the new DirectX and it's featureset and the interest in developers to further the Fx we get in our games. Along with this is the nVidia(unheard) rumors that they are paying out cash to dev's to make up for some past errors in judgement. Thus the delay of HL2(maybe). Of course if Gabe was any kind of decent person he'd fess up on everything. But he wont. He's got too much of that King feeling, when really CS is the reason HL got so big. After seeing Painkiller I really wanted a dev kit for that but unfortunately they did not forsee anyone looking for a dev kit.. So not sure where Painkiller is going, but I have lots of interest now in the Havok engine. Might just see how difficult coding for that would be since i still have modelers and mappers etc..(right now only making maps and mods for UT2k4 dm, doh)

Yes, I agree with you about Half Life 2 (Curse you Gabe!!!) and you do have a point with STALKER, but so far its good to go for September. And ive also heard from a trusty "source" that you plan on making a new mod for UT2k4. By the way do you have Hitman Contracts (the newest one) or Hitman 2?

FX5900posted - Apr, 27 2004 - 16:41
Tom, i love your long posts. You are so right about Valve's Gabe & the reason why HL was popular was CS... you are so right - yet again! So who do you think will win the next round of video card wars? :-)

Tomposted - Apr, 27 2004 - 19:16
Hahahha I wont comment about video card wars, doesn't matter who wins in the marketing reviews. It's whose going to offer a card that will work with 100% of games and give decent fps. FPS soon wont be a issue, but quality and stability of drivers will. You know my answer on that. @Jared, no, I have since found out that the game likely wont hit the shelf till 2005. I am currently in talks with some developers but still the MSU contest has swallowed up a lot of developers that are working on non-imaginative mods. So until I can get a few more coders..
