$150,000 in damages in GTA Online cheating case
- briefly

A federal court has filed a default judgement against Jhonny Perez, the maker of Grand Theft Auto Online cheat program
Elusive
, in a copyright infringement suit. Southern District of New York Judge Kevin Castel has ordered Perez to pay the statutory maximum of $150,000, plus attorney's fees, after Perez declined to answer the charges in court. Elusive is one of a number of "mod menus" that let
Grand Theft Auto Online
players take practically full control of the multiplayer game environment, including granting the ability to generate infinite amounts of in-game currency. That in turn "undermines Take-Two's pricing and sales of legitimate virtual currency," as
the ruling
obtained by TorrentFreak
puts it. The ruling also says Elusive caused "Take-Two to lose control over its carefully balanced plan for how its video game is designed to be played... harm[ing] Take-Two's reputation for maintaining its gaming environment [and] discouraging users from further purchases and gameplay." Take-Two says it has no way of knowing exactly how much revenue has been lost due to the use of Elusive, but it estimated damages of at least $500,000 in the suit.

No way that dude made over 10K but sure, ruin his life, why not. You are not getting the money, he is getting prison time and someone else is going to continue making/selling cheats/mods because that's the way world works.
The main thing is you won Big Corporation, good for you.

What does that mean?
Did he keep saying go fuck yourselves?
I'm not sure how that could be classified as a win.
Winning is when you can actually prove someone is guilty of the charges.
I don't think that happened here.
They said themselves: we have no clue how much damage did he cause.
Did he actually cause any? Or did he actually stimulate the sales more? (more sales to cheaters and more in-game item sold due to higher level of competition)
Lastly, people leave the games behind even when there's no cheating involved - if your game and model sucks, there will be less people playing.
I bet they did not take that into account, either.
I am not sure what kind of a court can convict a man based on fiction/make believe but it paint a sad picture to Southern District of New York.
Maybe they bought the jury.

He has to pay the fine.
He has to pay the lawyers too.
How's that not a win?
It's the USA man, everything is totally upside down there and corrupt. They got an senile old goat for a president.
His life is over? nobody put a gun to his head to do the cheat. He did it of his own accord. Do the crime, do the time.
Bought the jury, now you are watching too many american movies.

Maybe.
But the thing is, there's just no evidence to back up the claims/damages.
So how can you protect yourself where there's no way to prove claims/damages are valid or invalid???
Hence the suspicion that the jury might have been bought.
There are many ways of buying a jury - don't think of it as someone showing up with a huge pile of cash.
For example, you can ensure they invite people who have no clue what the case is about - or people that are already disappointed with online games.
Done; jury rigged.
No. These guys wanted a precedence at whatever cost.
I sell buses.
Someone finds a way to cheat with the bus ticketing system and posts that know-how - so some people get a free ride.
How does that have any impact on the amount of people opting for public transportation using buses only?
How do you tell the number of people that actually stop using buses because others are riding for free???
You can't. It's a subjective opinion, which should have been dismissed in court.
How is it not your problem in failing to fix the bus ticketing system!?
If your system is prone to problems, there will be problem.
Anticipate and address them instead of just blatantly ignoring them and blaming it on someone else.
This is how ethical hacking works.
Make room for ethical cheating, reward it with a 100k instead of claiming millions in damages that never happened.
Oh, wait. That would mean you are intelligent rather than greedy.

Why do you assume there was a jury? Most of the time there is no need for jury.
