Doom 3 in March of 2004? - briefly

GameDAILY is reporting (thanks NewDoom.com) that RBC Capital Markets has issued a research brief in advance of Activision's releasing financial details from its first quarter next Tuesday. One area RBC expresses some concern with is the release of Doom III, in development by id Software. The investment firm, citing the release schedules of various retail website (not the most reliable sources, but semi-useful for informative purposes), as now showing a Doom III release date in March of 2004, as opposed to a previously expected street date of this November:

RBC wonders how a later release of Doom III would affect Activision in the current fiscal year, as it has projected the anticipated PC game to contribute $68.0 million in revenues and $0.10 per share in Activision's third-quarter and $26.0 million and $0.04 per share in the company's fourth quarter. While RBC notes that a delay in the game's release from the third to fourth quarter could result in a fiscal year drop of approximately $27.0 million in revenue, it adds that any loss would be merely tacked on to the next fiscal year's results.

In addition, German Doom 3 fansite Doom3vision.de has posted four new screenshots of Doom 3 (grabbed probably from the leaked alpha version).

Update: It seems to be confirmed, during Activisions's financial quarterly conference call, company execs updated their 2003 release calendar and the long anticipated id Software first person shooter Doom III was not among the games planned for release this year.

LOL, i knew this was going to happen. They're scared of VALVE. Because HL2 is so powerful, if DOOM3 was released at the same time it might look outdated a bit :( I understand ID's decision. They obviously want to impress the games market and have everyone focused on DOOM3 come 2004.

It's already been many many monthes since the 'beta' was released ... then it was going to be released in August .. then November .. then March. is this looking like the next Duke Nukem fiasco?

Well, that sucks. Doom 3 seems to be running into two problems: content creation and economics. First, the art isn't done. It's much harder to create content for D3 than it is for HL 2, and now we can see how hard. Secondly, there just isn't enough high end hardware on the market yet to reach the kind of sales they're fantasizing about. $68 million?! That's 1.3 million copies (assuming $50 apiece). Pretty wishful thinking considering the average PC CPU is under 1 ghz.

Well, EVERY game should run great with a 1 Ghz CPU, if it doesn't, it means it has been thrashy programmed. If they optimise the game, it will run great on every machine.

Actually i think that ID's reason for the delay in release can only mean they are SCARED of what HL2 will do to the sales of D3. Also i reckon they want 2 see what HL2 have 2 offer when its released and will try and go one better ! Thats the only two reasons i can think of the mighty ID boys would do, and i thought they werent scared of anyone, i was WRONG !

March eh? Just in time for the HL2 counterstrike port, Halo, battlefield Vietnam. Noone will care about doom 3. I gave up caring when i saw that 500mb E3 trailer for HL2. Thats was the death rattle for D3.

all your happy commentings will be wasted better just to keep in mind "better upgrade your pc to ATI RADEON 9800 PRO" video card. Because DOOM 3, will take a s**t loads off your pc believe that. Just because you have a 1.0GHZ pc it NOT mean it will run correctly the most important is the video cards. Lucky me I got a brand a** spanking new in your face Alienware that will handle ANY NEW pc games out there. Haha enjoy your games peoples.

I dont think id is afraid of valve at all. Almost every single game is pushed back and never released on its due date. Doom will sell tons of copies on its past merits and name alone. The "beta" was not "released" many months ago. I wouldnt even call that an alpha but possibly a work in progress or technical demo. ID has always pushed the limits on the current hardware. You shouldnt expect your 3 year old 1ghz cpu to run the latest and greatest. I expect both games to be good and not to be some kind of joke like DNF. :)
