Xbox has slashed 136 positions at legendary *Doom* developer id Software, hitting programmers and QA teams particularly hard as part of broader restructuring under new CEO Asha Sharma.

The cuts, confirmed via a Texas WARN notice, represent roughly half the studio’s workforce and come amid Microsoft’s plan to eliminate around 3,200 Xbox roles overall.

In my view, this is a brutal decision and Sharma's first major misstep at the company. While I can understand some of the other staffing reductions and studio restructuring, cutting the talent behind id Tech feels like a major mistake. The expertise behind id Tech has powered some of the industry's best game engines for decades, and losing that knowledge is a significant blow.

The decision appears tied to Sharma’s relative lack of deep gaming background, with observers arguing the studio’s expertise could have strengthened Xbox’s entire portfolio rather than being decimated.

id Software’s recent Doom: The Dark Ages faced mixed reception, but many believe the core team’s technical prowess remained a valuable asset worth preserving.

Given how hell-bent Satya is to kill Windows, I think Asha is a very good fit to kill gaming at Microsoft.
