I've noticed over at PlanetHalfLife that they have posted some scans from the next PC Gamer magazine. I'm not completely sure that these are legit, but decide for yourself :P Seems that Half-Life 2 will be released this year, but who knows. Well, all these wacky rumors should be cleared up by May 14th :)

Update: It seems that magazines with Half-Life 2 cover stories have started showing up all around the globe, here is a thread in GoneGold forum (thanks jd) that contains some info:

My Half Life 2 PC Gamer came in the mail today. Some interesting quick things I've read so far:
- Girl character is not playable
- Same author of story as the first Half Life
- Interactive scripted scenes
- Barney and the G-Man both get face lifts of sorts
- There will be a Half Life 3
- Half Life 2 comes out Sept. 30
- The Plot: There is a new alien invasion and some of the Xen aliens are now your allies.
- The game takes place in a Eastern European city.
- The game supposedly will be able to run on a DX6-compatible TNT card
- Mentions a more robust mod making experience
- Cool in-game psychics

Well, looks like PlanetHL had to pull their scans. Wondering hx, if the pics you have here are all of them that WERE available at PlanetHL? Looking forward to this game and hopefully it'll be out this year. btw, my opinion of PC GAMER is that they have lame previews (got to get those ad dollars) and their reviews are pretty crap for industry professionals. Anyone try reading a European mag of any sort? Damn, they know how to give you your moneys worth in terms of articles, columns, etc. Here in North America, you get crap for the money you pay with nothing to read except tonnes of ads.

Damm those pics look good, is it gonna B another UNREAL 2 all looks but no PLAY ? looks like they have done alot of work they've seemed 2 have kept it SECRET but who will win the war BETWEEN ID & VALVE ? i'll stick with ID that JOHN CARMACK always suprises me real CREATIVE genius !

Interactive scripted scenes... I'm alittle hazy on that one? That's one of the biggest flaws in single player stories today, the if-I-step-past-this-point-this-will-be-triggered type thing, and afaik that can't be labeled "interactive" so I have high hopes HL2 takes this a step further and makes it more interactive and dynamic. Pic2 looks like any game out there, Pic3 looks kinda amazing but probably get alot of added "realism" since it's a magazine scan =)

If you think that Id is all about creative genius when it comes to gameplay, then why did the gameplay of Quake - Quake 2 seem so subpar when compared to seemless story line, action and overall playability (as well as better AI) of Half Life? Carmack is a good technology guy, but I think his games are sub par at best.

Thnx hx with the update on all those pics. Damn, like the comparison they've done with the characters from the first HL and now HL2. I guess Valve got their inspiration of those BUGS/ALIENS from STARSHIP TROOPERS. Heh. Wow! What a year this year is gonna be in terms of entertainment! Movie and game sequels galore Matrix2, Xmen2, T3, LOTR 3, Doom3, HL2, DeusEx2, and more! Better save those pennies!

OH MY GOD. Valve is kicking so much ass. I really wish I knew how Carmack felt about these shots. I mean, not to take anything away from the guy, but I wonder how he would feel seeing this stuff. Would he feel even more motivated to kick ass? One has to wonder how they are going to get a game to look this good and still be able to run on a decent amount of machines. Is the game D3D or OpenGL? If it was D3D, Microsoft could basically justify all the work and technology behind DX9 and say "look at what the right content creators can make with our technology". If these are real shots, Valve has raised the bar to a place where almost no one else can reach. One more thing, the mods for this.. imagine CS using this engine. Or DoD. Or my fave, TFC2 on this would make me quit my job and glue myself to my computer for weeks.

doom3 will have great graphics, the single player interactivity will be lacking due to the small levels they had to work with to get the graphics to that level on todays hardware, i really doubt hl2 will turn out to be another unreal2 - epic is all about licensing the engines now, u2 was basically a engine demo in my opinion. want interactivity and great gameplay? wait for this and deusex2 and dare i say it duke forever.

i like the doom & quake series due to the fact that there werent any "WOMEN" closely tied to the plot. I dont mean Big breasted Lara type but one that we've seen many times in the movies, where a women either screws the the HERO's orginal plan of thought or either needs rescuing from the jaws of death or acting like the eyes & ears for the hero to complete his tasks. I cant stand obstuctive, useless bimbos in MOVIES and now its like we'll see em in PC games watch out 4 HL2 i bet that GEEKY women will play either role ! If its a way at introducing female gamers or teasing pubescent male teens then 4get IT, ppl like me HARDCORE orginal gamers WHAT rip S**T up !

Looking superb, and in some ways, even better than Doom 3. Carmack's Doom 3 engine looks to shine in tight spaces, offering a kind of hyper-realism, but these HL shots invite some jaw-dropping with their highly detailed exteriors. Apart from engines, though, Valve has it all over id in terms of gameplay: it took Carmack's genius to produce the engine technology on which Valve got its start, but it took Valve to do something really incredible with that technology. Unless id can capture some of the feeling they last displayed in the original Quake and the Doom series, this race is going to go to Valve.
