Microsoft is developing Project Natal plus new software and content services to prolong the life of the Xbox 360 games console, rather than introduce a new machine.

At a CES keynote, Xbox boss Robbie Bach said Natal will be released for the 2010 holiday season, ie in the run-up to Christmas. Hufford said the team ha

That's one fine clever conclusion from the MS folks.
They pretty well know that the majority of users will not be willing to open their wallets once more for the next next-gen RROD production box.

Anyway when it's there, I won't buy the plastic guitar, nor the plastic microphone nor the plastic skateboard nor the plastic shotgun nor the plastic tennis racket nor the plastic balance board, nor the plastic light sabre, nor the plastic ping-pong palette, I'll wait for how much the plastic Ballmer doll will be priced, but I think I'll pass on that one too...

The reason why they say that is that trying to bring out a new console anytime soon will tank them. Or at least the division responsible for it. Same goes or Sony. And Nintendo.

As far as 3D games on consoles goes, that must be a joke. 80% of the games I played aren't able to keep up a fluid framerate even in their reduced resolution in 2D, I can't play some games on a console because it seems like a slideshow to me! And now they want to do that with essentially half the framerate? That's what I call hubris.

That's right, no new consoles because of the financial crisis. Couldn't be more clear.

Also, the numbers don't lie, even during the good times the PS2 continued to do very well long after the latest round of machines were released. The same would be even more true if next-next-gen systems were to come along now.

I would rather developers concentrate on coming up with new and interesting gameplay ideas to keep us interested, than wrestling with the latest and greatest new tech. You know, just so that we can have giga-res DX15 [insert long running cash-cow franchise] games with the same tired old gameplay.

Maybe you should scrap your Atari 2600 or your 50 year old black and white tv because I have no problems with any game I've bought on the PS3. Laughing

2D!!!?? You don't even know what you're talking about! most decent phones today can handle 3D, let alone a console! Your console is bricked if it can't chuck out stable fps -online lag, as per the PC, but not through CPU/GPU performance alone.

Myself and the article aren't talking about "normal" 3D graphics, but the kind you need a special 3D Monitor for. As far as normal human depth perception goes, all games currently are really 2D.

What I meant is, that for depth perception the view needs to be rendered twice, ergo, half the FPS you have normally, and a LOT of games hardly manage to get 30 FPS at times, which would end up as 15 FPS in 3D depth mode.

That is why I was amused at the prospect of current consoles using 3D in any sort of graphically elaborate game.
