Diablo IV system design update - preview
(hx) 10:32 PM CET - Nov,20 2019 - Post a comment
While Blizzard has confirmed that quarterly updates for Diablo IV will start providing a behind-the-scenes look at development starting in February 2020, more blog posts are already prepping players for what to expect while also engaging fans in the conversation around systems that are yet to be determined. David Kim, Lead Systems Designer on Diablo IV, posted an update on multiple systems in Diablo IV, including endgame progression. Here's an excerpt:
We haven’t decided whether the character leveling and experience system should be finite or infinite. We’ve been discussing the pros and cons of both and would love to hear your thoughts. There seems to be some concern around infinite being worse because it will eventually overshadow all the power granted by other sources. However, we can control how much power each system gives, whether it’s infinite or finite.

For example, say we’re talking about thousands of hours of gameplay . . . within those thousands of hours, we could choose to create a finite system that grants 1,000,000 times more power than an infinite system, making it practically impossible for the infinite system to catch up in power.

Also, power increase doesn’t need to be linear throughout the ranks—it can slow down as players reach higher levels. We believe the more important question is what experience feels best for players, and we can playtest various approaches to tuning to find the power curve that makes the most sense.

We have a couple reasons for having a different experience system in addition to a level cap. A level cap gives us the ability to grant players a sense of completion. But for players who want to go deeper into the game, a second experience system allows us to capture the fun of achieving those really difficult endgame goals and ranks. We can also introduce additional depth through this system, because players will be more experienced with the game at this point. Ultimately, our goal is to create a meaningful system that provides clear choices depending on your preferred playstyle in the endgame.

CS:GO Operation Shattered Web Launches - briefly
(hx) 10:02 PM CET - Nov,19 2019 - Post a comment
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive fans will want to check out Shattered Web, the latest operation for the game. With Shattered Web, a bunch of new features have been added to the game. Among those features are new maps, new agents to unlock, an accolade system for highlighting accomplishments, and a new progression system that is very much like a battle pass. The progressions system is a pass that levels up with stars that are earned by completing weekly in-game missions. As the pass levels up, it gives players access to new cosmetics. The pass is also more expensive at $15 than past offerings. The new agents are characters that players can equip on the T or CT side. Master agents are cosmetic options that give unique voices and animations. Players are gifted one of those skins when they reach 100 stars. Other updates with the game include three new weapons collections with designs from community artists. The new accolades highlight things from the match like total assists, MVP, and enemies flashed. The new maps include the Flying Scotsman map called Lunacy and a community Danger Zone map called Jungle. The competitive side of the game gets Studio, which is available for Scrimmage or Casual Sigma. The new weapons include four new knives that players have a chance of unlocking when opening a Shattered Web Case. There are also chances to open custom weapons. Each week, players will get the chance to play one of 6 non-overlapping missions that can be completed in any order. The new Lunacy map has players fighting in low gravity on a lunar outpost. Players can enjoy new content without a pass, but they won't receive Operation rewards. Operation Shattered Web will last longer than 16 weeks, with a new set of missions unlocked each week for 16 weeks

Half-Life: Alyx VR Game Announced - briefly
(hx) 12:25 PM CET - Nov,19 2019 - Post a comment
And it's official everyone. Valve has just announced that Half-Life: Alyx is real! As the rumor suggested, Half-Life: Alyx will be a VR title which is due to be officially revealed this Thursday at 10am PT. While the rumor seemed to indicate the reveal would take place at The Game Awards 2019, it’s possible we’ll see footage of the new game rather than a reveal as that’s already happening.
There’s not much else known about the new Valve game, but it’s certainly causing a stir online. Fans are excited about the idea of a new Half-Life title after waiting for a new one to pop up since 2007 when Half-Life 2: Episode 2 landed. Other fans seem a bit miffed that the game seems to be VR exclusive. The title suggests that the story will be centered around Gordon Freeman’s pal, Alyx Vance. Whether or not we play as Gordon Freeman himself or take control of Alyx is another thing, although the rumor’s we’re seeing seem to claim the player plays as Alyx. It’s also said to be launching in 2020.

Google Stadia - Early reviews - briefly
(hx) 11:47 PM CET - Nov,18 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Google Stadia, Google's new cloud-gaming platform, has had a ton of hype and made promises. Well it's finally here, in some form at least. With only a handful of games and a handful of compatible devices, a lot of its promised features aren't available at launch. Is the service the first step towards the future of gaming, or will Stadia fall flat on its face? Here's what the early reviews say:

The Stadia controller connects to the Chromecast Ultra via WiFi, enabling untethered gameplay in the living room. To play on a phone, tablet, laptop or PC, the official gamepad has to be physically plugged in (for now). The first Stadia game I booted up was Destiny 2 on the Chromecast Ultra. The title screen loaded quickly and I created a new character; the process felt so smooth and familiar that I forgot I was playing a AAA, online game on a streaming puck the size of a Thin Mint. But then, I started shooting. The lag was immediate.
With Stadia, games sometimes look like you’re watching an ultra-high resolution gameplay video rather than actually playing the game yourself. They look drab. If you want to understand, go watch this video, make it fullscreen, set the quality to the highest your display can support. This is what it looks like to play games on Stadia. It's better quality than you'd get trying to play a game on mid-tier hardware, but not quite as crisp and crystal-clear as it would be if you played it on a really nice display. Stadia excels in that middle ground just shy of ultra-high-def.
While you've probably heard predictions that Google's Stadia will be the "Netflix of games," it turns out the analogy only goes so far. While Google intends to eventually have a back catalog of free games included for your $10 monthly fee, Stadia is not primarily a subscription service. The subscription only includes a single game as of today — Destiny 2. Primarily, Google tells us you should expect to buy, not rent cloud games for the same retail prices you'd find on other platforms like PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and Steam.
It costs $120 to get the early edition Founder's pack, which includes a Stadia controller, a Chromecast Ultra, a short USB-C-to-C cable, a Destiny 2 game download, and three months of a $10-per-month Stadia Pro subscription service needed to take advantage of all of Stadia's online features. Also, you need to buy the actual games at their regular prices... even though you can't download them. A more affordable Stadia play service is launching in 2020, though details are unclear. It all seems like a lot to pay for a "consoleless console." In the UK, you can get the Premiere Edition with the same features. Prices of Stadia games are basically full retail game prices. This could get crazy expensive fast!
