AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Driver Update - tech
(hx) 11:49 PM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment
AMD on Tuesday announced a brand new version of its software suite for Radeon graphics cards that delivers 20 new or updated features and promises enhanced performance – on average, an increase of around 12 percent – across more than a dozen games, all in a fully revamped application sporting a fresh look. Diving right in, AMD reportedly references a baker’s dozen of games in its press deck that’ll benefit from the new Adrenaline 2020 Edition software including Borderlands 3, Forza Horizon 4 and Wolfenstein: Young Blood, just to name a few. Raw performance improvements aside, AMD’s latest affords a number of compelling new features including Radeon Boost. This feature detects mouse movements in games – like when you are moving around during an action sequence – and by dynamically reducing image resolution, is able to boost frame rates and fluidity with little to no change in discernible image quality. According to AMD, Radeon Boost can enhance performance by as much as 23 percent in applicable scenarios. In testing, our own Tim Schiesser noted that it works strictly based on mouse movements and isn’t influenced by other factors like on-screen action or even inputs from other devices such as controllers or your keyboard. Simply, the more your mouse is moving, the more aggressively the feature works.

Other noteworthy features and updates include integer display scaling which is designed to make older, resolution-limited games look better on modern, high-res displays via pixel perfect upscaling as well as expanded support for Radeon Anti-Lag and Radeon Image Sharpening.
How to Extend Your Windows 7 Security Updates Past January 2020 - tech
(hx) 11:20 PM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
Do people still use Windows 7? Absolutely. And if they cling to it past January 14 of this coming year, they’ll have to pay a fee to Microsoft to continue to receive security updates. Most people won't (and can't) do this, as Microsoft’s paid security updates are geared only toward businesses, but a clever little hack allows normal people to take advantage of this service - for free. What you should do? You have to first install three prerequisite updates to your Windows 7 system: KB4490628, KB4474419, and KB4523206. Restart your system as needed.

Then download the BypassESU tool (password: heslo). Install it, and you should then be able to install this test Extended Security Update (KB4528069). The BypassESU tool should allow you to circumvent the check Microsoft puts in place for Extended Security Updates. Once this update installs successfully, you should even be able to uninstall the BypassESU tool, as you’ll now be authenticated for future security updates. Of course, Microsoft might invalidate this little workaround and/or alter how it authenticates for Windows 7 Extended Security Updates. As the readme.txt file for the BypassESU tool notes:
However, you may consider this as prototype, based on tests with update KB4528069, things may change on February 2020.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Released - briefly
(hx) 08:08 PM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is now available on the Epic Games Store, offering the chance to pilot your own BattleTech Mech in the first single-player MechWarrior action game in nearly 20 years. There's also a set of MechWarrior 5 Origins novellas on the official website.
Almost 20 years since the last single player MechWarrior game hit pilot’s PCs, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries from Piranha Games is now available for download on the Epic Games Store ($49.99 standard, $59.99 collectors edition.)

Additionally, the full suite of short stories leading up to the events in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries have been released, and now an anthology collection of all eight is available: The new and original series is penned by Randall N. Bills, author of over half a dozen novels, and whose led the publication of hundreds of sourcebooks and rulebooks set within the BattleTech and MechWarrior universe over the past two decades. (

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries marks the return of the series’ mission-focused campaign structure, allowing pilots to call the shots while leading either AI-controlled allies or up to three friends through optional co-op into dangerous contracts. Unit leaders will decide which risky missions to accept, where their priorities lie across the Inner Sphere’s volatile conflict zones, as well as how to best utilize the resources earned from their dances with death.

Featuring expansively destructible environments, pilots can tear through structures while swatting helicopters out of the sky and reducing rival pilots’ rides to scrap. Strategize in the moments in-between battles in the Mech Bay with mission recovery and choose your pre-deployment loadouts to maximize your chances of glory on the battlefield. Whether you play solo or team up via co-op with friends, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is all about risk, reward, and consequence.

The first reviews can be found on ArsTechnica:
MW5:M includes both a linear, plot-filled campaign and an "instant action" combat option, and both of these work in single-player and online co-op flavors. The former includes progression over a series of missions, which means you'll accumulate currency, scrap, and weapons left on the battlefield, along with experience-point progress for both your general skills and specific weapons. The latter opens with a menu that lets you pick certain battling options--objectives, biome, enemy faction--and spawn a randomly generated mix of terrain and enemies; in these one-off scenarios, progress isn't saved.

I opted to test my HOTAS rig with the campaign, since it includes a control tutorial. The first issue I ran into while HOTAS testing was the need to keep a mouse and keyboard handy. You'll have to "walk" through a base between missions, which I couldn't figure out how to map to the joysticks. The second issue was that the tutorial was not built for alternative control schemes. Even with certain functions mapped to my joystick or throttle, the on-screen GUI still displayed keyboard-button commands—and worse, many tutorial steps wouldn't complete until I tapped the keyboard version of the demanded button.

Based on feedback from MW5:M developers Piranha Games, this issue will likely linger for a while after launch, if not indefinitely. If you want to play the game with preferred HOTAS hardware, even if it is supported by a "plug-and-play patch," you'll want to go into the options menu and map your every control function before starting the game (and write down your chosen functions on an index card, since in-game menus won't remind you of your button choices).
If the story doesn't interest you, then hop into Instant Action. In this mode, you can choose any mission type and any of the mechs available in the game. Feel like trying the Atlas, Warhammer, or King Crab? Go for it, strike out on your own, and have some fun. Honestly, this was the part I enjoyed most.

There's also co-op, allowing you to team up with your friends and take on missions together. It's available in both the story and Instant Action modes.

Overall, MechWarrior 5's gameplay is well thought out. Fighting other mechs feels gritty, forcing you to strategize to figure out the best way to take them down. Going into battle under the tonnage limit means you'll be at a disadvantage, so be sure to have a good spread of mechs to meet the challenge. You need to juggle what to bring with you, too, whether that's more ammo for your AutoCannon, additional bullets for your machine gun so that you can pelt enemies and buildings, or heat sinks to lower the risk of overheating when using energy weapons.

When on a mission, you have to pay attention to your mech's status, your weapon range, and the enemies' spread. There's a lot to worry about, not to mention your evasive movement patterns and keeping on course. To be sure, it's not for everyone, but players who like the complexity of piloting and maintaining a mech will find a lot to love.

And that leads me to my biggest gripe with MechWarrior 5: the encroaching boredom. The gameplay, as I said, is pretty good, but it can grow dry and tiring before too long. To handle the sharp difficulty spikes, you'll need to grind missions in lower-tier areas to gain enough skill points and funds to take on upper-level tasks and quests. You'll go through a staggering amount of money just traveling to new star systems and repairing your mechs after a battle. Not to mention the real-world time it takes to sit through loading screens, which come complete with frame drops and, once again, repetition.
Finally having reached the conclusion the question becomes, do I recommend MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries? No, I cannot say I do, but I also am not recommending against it. Based on my perspective and preferences, it definitely has flaws, enough so I cannot recommend it. I am also not recommending against it because I do not consider it a bad game. I feel there is just enough misalignment in what I enjoy in a game and what this offers to fail to recommend, but I recognize much of this is a misalignment in preference that I cannot and will not call it bad. There are definitely people out there this will better, even perfectly align with, but I am not among them.

The graphics are pretty good, and while there are imperfections like repeated textures for the ground, given the somewhat open design to the game with myriad worlds to visit, such imperfections are hardly unacceptable. The story is not that strong and while much of my criticisms can be dismissed by remembering the game is about mech battles, the one I do not want to dismiss is I feel no investment into the MechWarrior/BattleTech Universe. The gameplay has various flaws, with some being issues I would hope can be addressed as though they are bugs (the "radar" for example) while others stem from the misalignment I described above, and so might never change. Nothing wrong with that, but it does help to know going in.

I also want to remind everyone that I have only played this solo. Co-operative play is also possible and could produce a very different experience, both because the AI co-pilots can be somewhat incompetent but also because playing with friends can always change an experience, compared to playing alone.

Resident Evil 3 Remake Announced - briefly
(hx) 06:42 PM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment
Capcom has announced a remake of Resident Evil 3 for Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch. It will launch worldwide on April 3, 2020 and include the NeoBards Entertainment-developed Project Resistance, now titled Resident Evil: Resistance, as its multiplayer component.
Today on PlayStation’s State of Play broadcast, Capcom celebrated the 20th anniversary of the survival horror classic Resident Evil™ 3: Nemesis by unveiling a completely reimagined Resident Evil™ 3. On the heels of the award-winning Resident Evil™ 2, this highly demanded follow-up in the 94 million unit selling franchise once again utilizes Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to complete the Raccoon City story arc. Resident Evil 3 stars Jill Valentine – one of video games’ most iconic heroines – as she escapes from a crumbling Raccoon City while being pursued by the unrelenting bioweapon Nemesis. Players can also participate in previously untold Umbrella experiments on the outskirts of Raccoon City in the included online asymmetrical multiplayer game Resident Evil™ Resistance, previously known as the working title Project Resistance. Resident Evil 3 will be available on PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X and Steam on April 3, 2020.

Resident Evil 3 is set amidst the nightmarish outbreak of the T-virus, a biological weapon developed by the pharmaceutical company Umbrella Corporation. The game marks the debut of Nemesis – a towering humanoid bioweapon designed for both brutality and high-functioning intelligence – whose dogged hunt of S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine made him an icon of the Resident Evil™ series. Armed with an arsenal of high-powered weaponry and wrapped in a black suit to hide his mutilated features, Nemesis will maim, pulverize or destroy any obstacle on the path to his target.

Jill’s harrowing escape takes place in the panic-stricken hours leading up to and following the events of the acclaimed best-selling Resident Evil 2. Intense combat and puzzle solving combine to deliver the heart-pounding final chapter of Raccoon City’s collapse. The horrific settings from the original game and new content come to life as never before with RE Engine, previously utilized to create the acclaimed Resident Evil™ 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry™ 5 with high-definition graphics and modernized gameplay mechanics.

Complementing the action-packed single player campaign is Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical 4 vs. 1 multiplayer game originally unveiled as a working title at Tokyo Game Show earlier this year. As the Mastermind behind the scenes, players can assume the role of key Resident Evil characters like Annette Birkin in a series of deadly experiments. Manipulate the environment and wield a deck of cards to place vicious creatures, set traps and weaponized security cameras to snare hapless Survivors. A first for the franchise, Masterminds can even directly control elite bioweapons like G-Birkin and Tyrant. In turn, four Survivors must effectively work together, making the most of a variety of weapons and each player’s unique special abilities, to stand a chance of escaping the experiment before time runs out.

Resident Evil 3 will be available on PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X and Steam on April 3, 2020. Those who pre-order will also receive the exclusive Classic Costume Pack that features the original design for Jill Valentine and hairstyle for Carlos Oliveira (Please check with your retailer to confirm they’ll have this pre-order bonus available).
The special version of the game is a GameStop exclusive, limited to the console releases, and will cost you $179.99. That being said, it’s a pretty good package for that cost. Getting the obvious inclusions out of the way first, Resident Evil 3: Collector’s Edition comes with the standard version of the game as well as a digital soundtrack. As for the physical goodies, it will also include a double-sided map of Racoon City, a physical Collector’s art book, and a nice looking 11? figure of Jill Valentine. As the cherry on top of an already solid release, the packaging for this Collector’s Edition will be themed after a S.T.A.R.S item box. Those who choose to pick up this Collector’s Editon will be getting it the day of release. For those of you who don’t already know, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil Resistance are coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on April 3, 2020. As a pre-order bonus, players can get a Classic Costume Pack that includes Jill’s original outfit and a modified hairstyle for Carlos Oliveira.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a Timed PS4 Exclusive - briefly
(hx) 09:53 AM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment
Square Enix has revealed the game’s official PlayStation 4 box art, and to the delight of many, it appears that the remake will only be exclusive to Sony’s console for 1 year. “Play first on PS4”, the box art reads. “timed exclusive until 3/3/21”. From the looks of it, PC and Xbox One owners will also be able to enjoy the remake as of March 4, 2021. Since the game’s official announcement back in 2015, rumors have claimed that the title could also release on the Xbox One and PC. Earlier this year, Xbox Germany posted a video on its Facebook page, claiming that the Remake would also hit the Xbox One in 2020, but Square Enix refuted this by stating that there are no plans to release the game on other platforms. "As previously announced, FINAL FANTASY VII Remake will be released for the PlayStation 4 on March 3rd 2020", Square Enix stated. "We have no plans for other platforms." Interestingly, an official press release from June still mentions that Final Fantasy VII Remake will “debut first” on the PS4 in 2020, suggesting that it's coming to other platforms later on.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is slated for a global release on PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
GOG GALAXY 2.0 Open Beta - briefly
(hx) 09:49 AM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment now offers GOG GALAXY 2.0, is now available to all as an open beta. This is the new version of the game launcher for their DRM-free store that is also designed to organize your entire game library, including those hosted on other services.
Let’s put an end to resource-heavy clients running all the time and us juggling between multiple apps to access our games and see what our friends are playing. GOG GALAXY 2.0 conveniently shows you all your games as one library and makes it easier than ever to stay in touch with your friends across PC and console platforms.

“For the past few years, we’ve seen continuous fragmentation of our game collections and gaming friends lists, further proving the need for an application that unites them all,” says Piotr Karwowski, Managing Director at GOG. “And I’m sure there are even more clients and launchers on the way,” Karwowski adds. “We’re amazed and thankful for the reaction from the community to the app and taking it even further by creating integrations with 20 gaming platforms – allowing everyone to see all their games and friends in GOG GALAXY 2.0.”

The closed beta brought numerous big updates like seeing friends’ online status from different platforms in GOG GALAXY 2.0 or adding Global Search. The latter allows multiple options – finding games and friends, launching games with a single press of a key and giving the ability to manually add any game to the library.
Total Tank Simulator Announced - briefly
(hx) 12:21 AM CET - Dec,10 2019 - Post a comment
Total Tank Simulator is a low-poly physics-based battle simulator set during 2020, and it is only slated for PC right now. Obviously, it’s a more lighthearted take on the conflict when compared to something gritty and realistic like Battlefield V, but Total Tank Simulator seems much more focused on gameplay and the variety of tools players have at their disposal. The reveal trailer shows tanks, soldiers, and planes in action as well as some destruction that will make up the core of Noobz from Poland’s first title. So far, three game modes have been confirmed. A sandbox mode will allow players to tinker with and create whatever they want, fulfilling the simulator portion of the title. That being said, Total Tank Simulator will also feature Shadow Mode, where players try to survive for as long as possible, and a campaign mode. 6 factions will be available in every part of Total Tank Simulator, and the 50 maps and hundreds of units do have historical roots, even if the game’s presentation is a bit more playful on the surface. It isn’t quite like anything else 505 Games is working on, which helps it stand out as part of their lineup.
Total Tank Simulator is currently only coming to PC and will arrive sometime in 2020

Intel Claims i5-9600KF Better than 3800X - tech
(hx) 06:18 PM CET - Dec,09 2019 - Post a comment / read (7)
Intel marketing is at it again, making sweeping performance claims about its embattled 9th generation Core processors against AMD's 3rd generation Ryzen. In a recent press conference in China, the company was shown claiming that its mid-tier 6-core/6-thread Core i5-9600KF is a "better" processor than AMD's 8-core/16-thread Ryzen 7 3800X. This claim is hard to defend with gaming, when even the "slower" 3700X is seen performing within 1% of the i5-9600K (identical CPU specs to the i5-9600KF) at gaming, and 22 percent faster at CPU tests, beating the i9-9900K in quite a few multi-threaded tests. The marketing slide makes four key claims: 1. that Intel processors are faster in 'real-world' use-cases (gaming, home/office, light content-creation), ; 2. that with boost-frequencies reaching 4.60 GHz, the higher IPC of these chips benefit gaming; 3. that the K-series chips easily overclock to 5.00 GHz yielding even more performance; and 4. that Intel processors have "smooth and stable drivers" compared to AMD. As if that wasn't bad enough, the slide claims that the 4-core/4-thread Core i3-9350KF is "better" than the 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5 3600X, and the entry-level i3-9100F being better than the 6-core/6-thread Ryzen 5 3500. This incident closely follows its September gaffe that sought to sourgrape AMD's HEDT creator performance leadership by discrediting its lead in certain applications by claiming they don't reflect "real world usage." Making Intel's test relevance claims comically wrong was the fact that it used app usage data gathered exclusively from notebooks.

New BioShock Game Officially In Development - briefly
(hx) 05:10 PM CET - Dec,09 2019 - Post a comment / read (1)
2K has announced that a BioShock title is in development at Cloud Chamber, a newly-founded development studio based in San Francisco and Montreal. Cloud Chamber is described as a "collective of storytellers eager to push the frontlines of interactive entertainment by making unique, entertaining, and thoughtful experiences that engage the world." According to 2K and Cloud Chamber, the BioShock title will be in "development for the next several years."

David Ismailer, President of 2K, said:
