Windows 11 April Update Triggers BSOD, Breaks Windows Hello - tech
(hx) 05:05 PM CEST - Apr,17 2025 - Post a comment / read (1)
Ever since people installed Microsoft's April cumulative update for Windows 11 24H2 (KB5055523), many have been greeted by a blue screen showing error code 0x18B and the message SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR. What started as a few scattered reports after March's KB5053656 and KB5053598 patches quickly became a widespread frustration once the April release went live. Some PCs reboot every minute or two, while others refuse to start up at all. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem in an updated support notice and is rolling out a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) to strip out the offending code. Home users should see the fix applied automatically within 24 hours, though you can speed things along by signing back in after a crash, opening Settings > Update & Security, and checking for updates up to five times. The rollback won't appear in your update history, but it will install quietly in the background.

IT teams don't need to wait, either. Administrators can push the KIR patch via Group Policy, and full instructions are available on Microsoft's support site. While the company hasn't detailed exactly what triggers the SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR or how often it occurs, a permanent correction is set to arrive in a future monthly update. In addition to the blue screens and reboot loops, some users have reported that Windows Hello facial recognition and fingerprint login stopped working. The quick workaround is removing and reconfiguring your biometric credentials. However, a complete repair is expected in May. After installing April's update, you may also notice a new "Inetpub" folder on your C: drive. This directory is the default home for Internet Information Services web files, and Microsoft confirms it was created on purpose to support optional web?hosting features. If you haven't enabled IIS, the folder will sit unused and doesn't pose any risk, so avoid deleting it to prevent potential errors if you choose to turn those services on later. In the meantime, keep Windows Updates checked for any new patches.

AMD launches Ryzen 8945HX, 8940HX, 8840HX, and 8745HX mobile gaming processors - tech
(hx) 11:43 PM CEST - Apr,09 2025 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD has announced new Ryzen 8000HX premium mobile gaming processors today. The new SKUs are the newest entrants to the high performance HX family which is designed for high performance gaming and other tasks. The company in fact expects nothing short of delivering "desktop-level performance in portable form factors for gamers and creators on the go." These processors are built on the 5nm "Zen 4" microarchitecture. Speaking of processors, the Ryzen 8000 HX lineup comprises four models: Ryzen 9 8945HX, Ryzen 9 8940HX, Ryzen 7 8840HX, and Ryzen 7 8745HX. Key features of these processors include up to 16 cores and 32 threads for multitasking, rendering, and gaming performance. Additionally, integrated RDNA 2 architecture on-board graphics are meant to handle light gaming, video playback, and other desktop tasks. While AMD has historically referred to their CPUs with integrated graphics as "APUs" or accelerated processing units, the company has made a distinction now to only refer to ones with more powerful versions of the iGP as APUs. In terms of memory, they support DDR5-5200 speeds in the SODIMM form factor and support PCIe Gen5.

Windows Notepad Gets Microsoft Copilot Integration - tech
(hx) 06:57 PM CEST - Mar,31 2025 - Post a comment
Everybody's favorite plaintext editor, Notepad, has been gathering features in the last couple of years. For over three decades, the Windows accessory could do little more than just input and save plaintext files, but Microsoft has been adding features to it. It began with the 2022 addition of tabs—the ability to have multiple text files open as tabs. This was roughly when Microsoft changed Notepad from a Win32 application to a UWP app. Then in 2024, as part of a larger care package to all Windows accessories, Microsoft added spelling and grammar checks; and now the company brought Copilot integration directly into Notepad. A dedicated Copilot button in the Notepad toolbar now shows up. It spawns a menu that lets you use Copilot to proof the text, such as rewriting it, making it longer/shorter, changing the tone of the text, or even formatting it.
