Scumbag ASUS: Overvolting CPUs & Screwing the Customer - tech
(hx) 05:23 PM CEST - May,11 2023 - Post a comment / read (1)
ASUS' actions relating to the Exploding Ryzen CPU debacle are disgraceful and abrasive to the trust that the brand has earned. ASUS has demonstrated clearly it wishes to not only avoid supporting users, but actively engineers ways to abandon them. ASUS' updates haven't even fixed the problems, yet they posture as if they have while simultaneously suggesting that users 'just run defaults' on their $700 motherboards, as if that makes any sense whatsoever. So, to accommodate ASUS' request, we ran defaults and re-benchmarked the Ryzen 7000 series. It sucks. Big surprise. They also don't support their own BIOSes for the ASUS ROG boards.

Google finally demos generative AI in Search - tech
(hx) 10:17 PM CEST - May,10 2023 - Post a comment / read (2)
Google I/O is clearly the "We're extremely jealous of ChatGPT" show, and the first hour was packed with Google announcing generative AI features for every input box the company has control over. The company's most important input box is the one on the homepage of Google.com, and wouldn't you know it, that's getting generative AI, too. But didn't Google already release a generative AI thing? It did, but that was Bard, and Bard is not part of Google Search. Bard is just its own chatbot system, sequestered away in its own little sandbox at bard.google.com. Bard was Google's answer to ChatGPT. Putting generative search on Google.com, with its billions of daily users, is Google's answer to Bing. Part of the reason Bard wasn't integrated into Google Search right away was that 1) Google is cautious about generative AI, and 2) generative AI is very expensive to run at scale. So the company is taking a slow approach to all of this, as opposed to what Microsoft is doing. So, for Google.com, the "Search Generative Experience" will be an opt-in setting from a new "Search Labs" feature.

The Search Generative Experience will try to answer your question with a huge block of text that appears before the Google Search results. On Google's demos, the standard 10 blue links are nowhere to be seen; you'll have to scroll down to see them. Sometimes it even shows ads above the generative results box, pushing everything down even further

The Search Generative Experience will eventually be available on Chrome desktop and the Google App on Android and iOS in the US, in English only. You can sign up for the waitlist here, and Google says it will start inviting people in the coming weeks.

The Rubber Ducky? Basic. The Flipper Zero? Child’s play. This is the O.MG Cable, a stealthy, powerful hacking tool that allows the attacker to log your keystrokes, access your device, and emulate both keyboard and mouse movements. It's priced accessibly for the average consumer, and could be used to juice jack your phone or laptop. How do you protect yourself from such a device?

Why We All Loved Windows 7 - tech
(hx) 04:14 PM CEST - May,07 2023 - Post a comment / read (9)
On July 22, 2009, Microsoft released what many critics would consider to be the greatest operating system ever made: Windows 7. Many critics praised the OS for its slick design, easy to use desktop interface, and its implementation of features that made it much more similar to other competing systems of the time such as Apple’s Mac OS X. However, Windows 7 looks and operates practically identical to Windows Vista, which has been considered one of the worst versions of Windows to ever be released. So, what makes Windows 7 stand out and how has Windows 7 continued to preserve its positive legacy even today?

Almost Everyone is Wasting Their Money On CPU Coolers - tech
(hx) 08:31 PM CEST - May,05 2023 - Post a comment / read (4)
No matter where you go, you’ll see people debating the amount of cooling you need to make sure your CPU runs fast. With power hungry GPUs and computer cases that go a little too heavy on tempered glass it is important to make sure that your Intel Core or AMD Ryzen processor can run its best. But cooling can be expensive. So how much do you really NEED? Especially if you’re just gaming? Less than you think.

We Exploded the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D & Melted the Motherboard - tech
(hx) 03:09 PM CEST - Apr,30 2023 - Post a comment / read (2)
This video benchmarks and tests various points of failure for the AMD X3D CPUs in particular, but also just generally AM5 / Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) CPU failures. The most eye-catching failure mode is catastrophic: Users have posted photos of exploded CPUs with blown-out motherboard sockets and melted plastic. We bought those parts from the users to perform a failure analysis, then set forth testing our own AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPUs to see if we could make them explode. Spoiler alert: It worked. We were able to melt new AMD X3D CPUs in the socket of an ASUS X670E Crosshair Hero motherboard, but we also found severe BIOS bugs in Gigabyte's BIOS. SOC voltage isn't the only concern, here. It's also poor OCP implementation on at least the ASUS board we used, plus a combination of the erosion of thermal and over-current protections. As stated in the video, no test of this type is fully conclusive: These are complex issues with functionally infinite variables between users (and possible error), manufacturers, BIOS versions, and AMD itself. As such, we can only speak to our findings in some instances -- but we have some that do point to specific issues.

We killed 2x 7800X3Ds and 1x ASUS motherboard, but we also had 2 failed CPUs and 1 failed board from viewers.

VLC Media Player Adds NVIDIA RTX Video Super Resolution - tech
(d@rkfu) 10:55 AM CEST - Apr,17 2023 - Post a comment / read (1)
VideoLAN has launched a new version of the VLC media player that includes support for RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR), NVIDIA’s new technology for upscaling lower-quality video with the help of AI and a deep learning network. VLC 3.0.19 RTX Vetinari is a special version of the “Vetinari” branch of the popular media player with RTX upscaling, VideoLAN has confirmed, and according to the change log, this version of VLC activates VSR upscaling by default on NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs that support the feature (i.e., GeForce RTX 30 and 40 Series). Some users claim that NVIDIA VSR is capable of upscaling video just as well as madVR, the hugely popular video renderer from madshi that allows users to choose from various high-quality upscalers, including the GPU-intensive NGU models, but based on some of the comparisons that have been shared online (1, 2), reception of the results are sure to vary from user to user.
