Apple reveals Vision Pro, available for $3,499 - tech
(hx) 10:06 PM CEST - Jun,05 2023 - Post a comment
After years of speculation, leaks, rumors, setbacks, and rumblings of amazing behind-the-scenes demos, Apple has made its plans for a mixed reality platform and headset public. Vision Pro is "the first Apple Product you look through, not at," Apple's Tim Cook said, a "new AR platform with a new product" that augments reality by seamlessly blending the real world with the digital world. The headset will start at $3,499 and be available early next year. That puts the device in an entirely different class than most existing VR headsets, including the $550 PSVR2 (which requires a tethered PS5 to use) and the $500 Quest 3 that was just announced for a fall release.

The headset, which looks like a pair of shiny ski goggles, has a lightweight aluminum frame with a single piece of glass on the front that acts as a lens for a wide array of cameras. A single button lets you capture videos, while a "digital crown" lets you tune how much of outside reality is filtered out at any time. The Vision Pro's MicroOLED backplane packs 23 million pixels across two panels "the size of a postage stamp." A three-element lens delivers that image at the proper depth "everywhere you look," Apple said, and allows for true 4K HDR video that can show fine text that looks sharp "from any angle." The headset is powered by an M2 chip combined with support from a new chip called R1. These chips process inputs from 12 different cameras, five sensors (included a LiDAR scanner), and six different microphones. Apple said that while the M2 "ensures performance," the R1 "virtually eliminates lag" and delivers images to the displays within 12ms, ensuring experiences "feel like they're taking place in front of your eyes."

For weight purposes, an external battery will sit in your pocket and connect to the Vision Pro through a cable that attaches to the headstrap near the temple. Apple's product web site says that battery can support "up to 2 hours of use," or all-day use while plugged in to a wall outlet. A number of "soft textile parts" are part of a modular system that flexes to the form of your face, with a flexible band that incorporates ear pods for sound. Custom inserts from Zeiss will allow for vision correction for those who wear glasses. The headset's visionOS operating system can be controlled in a "fully 3D interface" without a handheld controller. It solely uses your eyes, hands, and voice as an interface, and the unit lets you "control the system simply by looking." Icons and other UI elements react to your gaze, and you use natural gestures like tapping your fingers or a gentle flick to select them-no need to hold your hands awkwardly in front of you constantly.

A user's encrypted, on-device "Optic ID" is used to unlock the Vision Pro and power things like Apple Pay and password autofill. Camera data and information about your eye input is kept in a separate background process, ensuring that apps and websites can't know where you're looking. In video demonstrations, Apple showed users walking around and grabbing things from a fridge without taking the headset off. And to further keep you from feeling isolated while wearing the headset, a system called EyeSight will display your eyes when someone is nearby, conveying "a critical indicator of connection and emotion."

(hx) 10:27 PM CEST - Jun,03 2023 - Post a comment
Nvidia released a hotfix driver to address some of the flickering issues that were being reported by several GeForce GPU owners. The latest WHQL-signed display driver from Nvidia, version 535.98, is causing black screen flickering for many users. The new hotfix driver release notes makes it clear that the driver only resolves the flickering problem for multiple-monitor setups when its adaptive sync technology, G-SYNC, is enabled. The changelog for the hotfix driver 536.09 says:
This hotfix addresses the following issue:

- When using multiple monitors which support adaptive sync, users may see random flicker on certain displays when G-SYNC is enabled after updating to driver 535.98 [4138119]

No More Cables* (Sort Of): MSI Motherboards Moving Cables to the Back - tech

This video shows MSI's B650M Project Zero motherboard, which aims to move the motherboard cables to the back of the board. It's not technically a 'form factor' yet, but it is something that ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte are all working toward. The only purpose is for reducing cable clutter -- there's no functional (as in, power) advantage to doing this, so the biggest challenge is getting enough consumers to care as there's no real support for cases right now.

Equally Disappointing - $299 AMD Radeon RX 7600 Review - tech

AMD is finally launching a mainstream GPU as part of their RDNA3 clad Radeon 7000 series lineup. And boy, are they being competitive. Especially since Nvidia doesn’t seem to concerned with the low end based on the pricing of their 4060 Ti cards. But can AMD match the Ray Tracing and AI bells and whistles of Team Green? And can AMD beat their own competitively priced 6000 series of video cards?

30 Games, 1080p & 1440p Tested - Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Review - tech
(hx) 10:56 PM CEST - May,23 2023 - Post a comment
The NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti GPU is a waste of sand -- it's unbelievable how NVIDIA can't even defeat its own prior namesake GPUs in a meaningful way at the same price. No wonder the company has been pushing DLSS3 so hard -- the lower the resolution they can convince you to run at, the better for this video card. With rumors of an AMD RX 7600 around the corner, and with Intel Arc A750 & A770 GPUs getting stronger with each update, NVIDIA is facing an uphill battle. This review & benchmark compares the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB to the RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4070, the GTX 1060, Arc GPUs, AMD RX 6700 XT, and AMD RX 6800 XT. We look at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K gaming and the best GPUs for each, plus ray tracing benchmarks, power consumption, and thermals. The 4060 Ti 16GB might not be enough to save it.

NVIDIA today announced its GeForce RTX 4060, RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, and RTX 4060 Ti 16GB. The release date is May 24th for the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, with the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti 16GB launching in July of 2023. The Prices are $400 for the 4060 Ti 8GB, $500 for the 4060 Ti 16GB, and TBD for the RTX 4060. Remember: AMD is launching its own Radeon RX 7600 in short order, according to rumors online, and that should slow-in under these new NVIDIA cards. We'll have a review of the RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti cards as soon as we get them, including benchmarks against alternatives and older models. In this video, we'll cover specs, prices, NVIDIA's cache vs. bandwidth argument, and some basics of how a GPU works. We also talk about our problems and disagreements with NVIDIA's data presentation.

Radeon RX 6950 XT or GeForce RTX 4070, Which $600~ GPU Should You Buy? - tech
(hx) 08:24 AM CEST - May,16 2023 - Post a comment / read (1)
Prior to the release of the 4070, the 3070Ti and 6950XT sold for the same price. Perhaps NVIDIA's demand for the same price is completely understandable. But what really baffles me is that people are actually paying that price and settling for "it has better RT performance" when 80% of the cards in NVIDIA's lineup don't really match the performance bump that is turning on RT. Not to mention how disappointing it is in about 9 out of 10 games that have implemented it. The problem is with the consumer. I just bought a client a 4070Ti (he really wanted it) and I'm going to end up returning it because the card is big, needs a super strong power supply, and in the end a half-price 3070Ti is plenty for what he plays.

The Erying Skyline and Polar Star (sometimes "polestar") motherboards offer a unique combination of a laptop CPU with pseudo-DIY motherboards, potentially offering a good value short of going full DIY. You could build cheaper than 13400 and board combo with this - but it comes with some oddities (and some bizarrely honest marketing). The mini-ITX board in particular is a fairly high-power laptop 12th Gen 12700H CPU with a custom-made "IHS," with the CPU directly soldered to the board. We also bought one with an 11980HK - -but we got malware flags on the driver downloads.

Scumbag ASUS: Overvolting CPUs & Screwing the Customer - tech

ASUS' actions relating to the Exploding Ryzen CPU debacle are disgraceful and abrasive to the trust that the brand has earned. ASUS has demonstrated clearly it wishes to not only avoid supporting users, but actively engineers ways to abandon them. ASUS' updates haven't even fixed the problems, yet they posture as if they have while simultaneously suggesting that users 'just run defaults' on their $700 motherboards, as if that makes any sense whatsoever. So, to accommodate ASUS' request, we ran defaults and re-benchmarked the Ryzen 7000 series. It sucks. Big surprise. They also don't support their own BIOSes for the ASUS ROG boards.

Google finally demos generative AI in Search - tech
(hx) 10:17 PM CEST - May,10 2023 - Post a comment / read (2)
Google I/O is clearly the "We're extremely jealous of ChatGPT" show, and the first hour was packed with Google announcing generative AI features for every input box the company has control over. The company's most important input box is the one on the homepage of Google.com, and wouldn't you know it, that's getting generative AI, too. But didn't Google already release a generative AI thing? It did, but that was Bard, and Bard is not part of Google Search. Bard is just its own chatbot system, sequestered away in its own little sandbox at bard.google.com. Bard was Google's answer to ChatGPT. Putting generative search on Google.com, with its billions of daily users, is Google's answer to Bing. Part of the reason Bard wasn't integrated into Google Search right away was that 1) Google is cautious about generative AI, and 2) generative AI is very expensive to run at scale. So the company is taking a slow approach to all of this, as opposed to what Microsoft is doing. So, for Google.com, the "Search Generative Experience" will be an opt-in setting from a new "Search Labs" feature.

The Search Generative Experience will try to answer your question with a huge block of text that appears before the Google Search results. On Google's demos, the standard 10 blue links are nowhere to be seen; you'll have to scroll down to see them. Sometimes it even shows ads above the generative results box, pushing everything down even further

The Search Generative Experience will eventually be available on Chrome desktop and the Google App on Android and iOS in the US, in English only. You can sign up for the waitlist here, and Google says it will start inviting people in the coming weeks.
