Apple Vision Pro Returns Begin as Owners Complain of Headaches, Eye Strain, Burst Blood Vessels - - tech
(d@rkfu) 12:50 AM CET - Feb,17 2024 - Post a comment / read (1)
Apple may have missed the mark with the Vision Pro, according to an uptick of owners online who say they've taken advantage of Apple's 14-day return policy by refunding the $3,500 headset and getting their money back. Comfort, headache, eye strain, motion sickness, and even "a burst blood vessel" are some of the reasons why customers aren't happy with the product, which Apple has described as "a revolutionary spatial computer that transforms how people work, collaborate, connect, relive memories, and enjoy entertainment."

Users say:

  • "Extreme headaches (first in decades). I can't wear [them] more than 10 minutes without extreme discomfort. Feels like a torture session just trying to keep it on. I have no idea how all these streamers can play for hours. After 10 minutes I feel like I'm about to have a heart attack."
  • "I unfortunately am also having severe headaches when I wear this for more than 30-45 minutes. This is so devastating as I love everything else about the AVP. I would like to think with continued use I would get used to this but it is too expensive to take that bet past the 14-day return period. I am returning mine today."
  • "I used them for like 6 hours. I was even addicted to them and now I don't want to touch them at all because of my eye fatigue. Feel like complete shit."
  • "I have moderate-severe motion sickness and used my friend's headset for less than 5 minutes before feeling sick. Literally just tried to search for a YouTube video and started feeling queasy. I would not recommend anyone with severe motion sickness try these. It's possible they get better over time but I'm definitely not putting one of these on again!"

22 GB Modded GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cards Listed on Ebay - $499 per unit - tech
(d@rkfu) 09:42 AM CET - Feb,16 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
An Ebay Store—customgpu_official—is selling memory modified GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards. The outfit (located in Palo Alto, California) has a large inventory of MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AERO cards—judging from their listing's photo gallery. Workers in China are reportedly upgrading these (possibly refurbished) units with extra lashings of GDDR6 VRAM—going from the original 11 GB specification up to 22 GB. They advertise their upgraded "Turbo Edition" card as a great "budget alternative" to more modern GeForce RTX 3090 and 4090 models—"more information and videos" can be accessed via 2080ti22g.com. The MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AERO 11 GB model is not documented within TPU's GPU database, but its dual-slot custom cooling solution is also sported by the MSI RTX 2080 SUPER AERO 8 GB graphics card. The AERO's blower fan system creates a "mini-wind tunnel, pulling fresh air from inside the case and blowing it out the IO panel, and out of the system." The seller's asking price is $499 per unit—perhaps a little bit steep for used cards (potentially involved in mining activities), but customgpu_official seems to be well versed in repairs. Other Ebay listings show non-upgraded MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti AERO cards selling in the region of $300 to $400. Custom GPU Upgrade and Repair's hype video proposes that their modified card offers great value, given that it sells for a third of the cost of a GeForce RTX 3090—their Ebay item description contradicts this claim: "only half price compared with GeForce RTX 3090 with almost the same GPU memory."

Unsupported hardware users will need to know if their CPU has SSE4.2 or SSE4a, you can download CPUID tool here.

Don't worry too much guys, if your intel CPU is a core i series of some kind (except all LGA1366 chips) you have SSE4.2 support. On the AMD side if you are rocking a phenom or later you should be fine. So for most I bet this is a non issue, unless your PC is like 16 years old! :-)
You can remove or disable Windows 11 and 10's AI button - tech
(d@rkfu) 07:49 AM CET - Feb,13 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
This was only a month after Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella expressed how they felt about Copilot and even likened it to the second coming of the Windows Start button in terms of its potential revolutionary impact. Perhaps foreshadowing its intentions, the company, at CES, introduced the new Copilot button on keyboards that will launch Copilot, similar to the Windows key that launches the Start menu.

if you don't like the new Copilot button, there is a chance that you may not like Copilot in general as well. For those who view Copilot as a bit of bloatware and don't quite find the use for it, a new third-party utility based on the fairly popular BloatyNosy app can help you get rid of it and other such AI-related features and additions that Microsoft has been making. Of course, you can also disable Copilot via policy or registry.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super gets reviewed here and benchmarked vs the AMD RX 7900 XTX, NVIDIA RTX 4080, and we also compare the entire NVIDIA lineup (including the RTX 4090, RTX 4070 Ti Super, RTX 4070 Ti, RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070, RTX 4060 Ti, and RTX 4060). There are a lot of cards to discuss right now and this piece will kind of re-center everything after weeks of reviews.

NVIDIA Releases GeForce 551.23 WHQL, Supports RTX 4070 Ti SUPER - tech
(hx) 12:38 AM CET - Jan,25 2024 - Post a comment / read (1)
NVIDIA today released the latest version of its GeForce software. Version 551.23 WHQL comes with support for the new GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER graphics card, which is available from today. The drivers also introduce an interesting feature called RTX Video HDR. The feature attempts to construct HDR for standard dynamic range videos using AI, accelerated by the Tensor cores on NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs. You globally enable it through the NVIDIA Control Panel, in the "adjust video image settings" section. The drivers also introduce support for Ultra Low Latency Mode with DirectX 12 based games.

In addition, the GeForce 551.23 WHQL adds Game Ready optimization for "Enshrouded," including support for DLSS 2, "Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth," including DLSS 3 Frame Generation support; "Tekken 8," including DLSS 2; and "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League," including DLSS 2. These are the first drivers to support the Open Beta of NVIDIA RTX Remix, a game development toolkit that helps create remasters of older game titles. A bug that caused "Forza Horizon 4" to freeze or crash with Ansel has been fixed. A random screen flickering issue with RTX 4060 Ti with desktop apps, has been fixed. A horizontal band appearing with G-SYNC over HDMI, has also been fixed.
Intel Releases Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.5234 WHQL - tech
(hx) 12:37 AM CET - Jan,25 2024 - Post a comment / read (1)
Intel has released the latest version of its Arc GPU Graphics Drivers, version 101.5234 WHQL. This appears to be a major update as it brings Game On Driver support for Arc A-Series Graphics for plenty of new games including Enshrouded, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Tekken 8, and the recently released and quiet popular Palworld, as well as Game On Driver support on Intel Core Ultra CPUs with Intel Arc Graphics for Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Tekken 8, and Palworld.

The new drivers also bring plenty of game performance improvements for a rather extensive list of games for both Arc A-series Graphics and Intel Core Ultra CPUs with Arc Graphics. These improvements range anywhere from 4 percent, up to 268 percent, and include both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 titles. You can check out the full list below. Intel also fixed a couple of issues, including Alan Wake 2 white corruption issue on reflective surfaces, Sons of the Forest corruption on the item text issue, and issues with Intel Smooth Sync in some DirectX 11 titles. It also fixes issues with on Intel Core Ultra CPUs with Arc Graphics where The Talos Principle may experience an application crash with certain upscaling presets, Call of Duty Modern Warfare III application crash issues, and Blackmagic Fusion application crash during render operations.

AMD Software Adrenalin 24.1.1 WHQL Released - tech
(hx) 09:12 AM CET - Jan,24 2024 - Post a comment
AMD has released the latest version of AMD Software Adrenalin drivers, version 24.1.1 WHQL. This is quite a big update as new drivers add support for the new AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card as well as bring day one support for Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth and TEKKEN 8 games. There is also support for AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF), which promises to boost FPS by up to 97 percent in any DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 game. In addition to AFMF, the new drivers also add AMD Video Upscaling, some additional video improvements, AMD Smart Technology Tab, AMD Assistant, and additional OS feature support. There are also several fixed issues. According to AMD, AFMF improves performance by adding frame generation technology to AMD Radeon 700M, RX 6000, and RX 7000 series graphics cards, both desktop and notebook versions. AMD also claims that AFMF preserves image quality by dynamically disabling frame generation during fast visual motion. AMD claims up to 97 percent average increase in performance across select titles at 1080p resolution with enabled AFMF and FSR 2 set at Quality Mode on Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card, as well as up to 103 percent increase with the same settings and the same Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card at 1440p resolution.

Samsung will provide its suite of Galaxy S24 AI features for free till the end of 2025 - tech
(hx) 09:56 PM CET - Jan,18 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
Last night, Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy S24 series phones that come with a host of new AI features like Live Translate, AI powered notes and more. While, the features do look enticing, Samsung may not provide them for free perpetually. As per the company's fine print on the Galaxy S24's landing page it looks like the AI powered features will be free on the S24 series till the end of 2025. The company also notes that different terms will apply to AI features that are provided by third-parties.

There is no word on the pricing or if Samsung plans to offer a subscription model to take advantage of these features after 2025. It is worth noting that all the AI powered features, with the exception of Live Translate, will require an internet connection as they run on the cloud. It is not surprising however, as Google also reserves some of the Pixel 8's AI features like the Magic Editor for those with a Google One subscription. Samsung is relying on Google's partnership to deliver some of the features and as noted in the footnotes, these features will be governed by third-parties and may remain free for longer.

Samsung has confirmed that it is planning to offer seven years of software support for the Galaxy S24 series. Given the long support, it is surprising to see the company offer only two years of free AI features, especially since yesterday's launch event was centered around AI. It will be interesting to see how Samsung plans to upsell Galaxy AI to consumers once the free period has ended.

Samsung S24 Series Adds More AI, Updates the Hardware - tech
(hx) 10:03 PM CET - Jan,17 2024 - Post a comment / read (3)
Samsung has unveiled its lineup of flagship phones for 2024, the Galaxy S24 series. The phones sport multiple upgrades in both hardware and software compared to last year's models. Larger displays, larger batteries, and more RAM are among the hardware improvements. New "Galaxy AI" on-device AI leverages Qualcomm and Google technology to power a long list of unique new features. These include live two-way language translation for voice calls and messaging (even in third-party apps), one-tap removal of reflections in photos, and auto-summarization in Notes. A new "Circle to Search" feature lets you highlight anything in any app (including text and photos) to Google that. There is a new setting to explicitly turn off any cloud-based AI processing to protect privacy and enterprise security. Samsung is also committing to a full seven years of OS upgrades and security updates for these phones. The Galaxy S24 and S24+ are similar in size to last year's models, but a thinner bezel means slightly larger (by 0.1") displays. The batteries are also slightly larger (by up to 6.6%). The larger "plus" model also gets a boost to a QHD+ resolution display and 12 GB of RAM standard. All models now incorporate gyroscope data to improve noise reduction in photos. Other camera specs and most other features remain largely the same compared to least year. The top-end Galaxy S24 Ultra retains a built-in stylus but switches to a flat (instead of curved-edge) display and titanium frame. This permits a body that's slightly thinner overall. It also now comes with 12 GB of RAM standard. The camera system has improved (wider-angle) optical stabilization and larger pixels on the main sensor to take in more light. The Ultra still offers 10x zoom, but now accomplishes this with a 50 megapixel sensor behind a 5x lens, (instead of a 10 megapixel sensor behind a 10x lens.) All three models — at least in the US — are powered by a Qualcomm's "Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy" (a version of the 8 Gen 3 with slightly faster peak CPU speeds of up to 3.4 GHz.) This also enables Wi-Fi 7 on the Ultra model, and Qualcomm's unique ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. Storage options are: 128 or 256 GB for the standard model, 256 or 512 GB for the plus model, and 256 GB, 512 GB, or 1 TB for the Ultra. The standard and plus models still start at $800 and $1,000, respectively, while the Ultra now starts at $1,300. This year's color options for all models are violet, yellow, gray, and black. Three more colors — green, blue, and orange — are available exclusively from samsung.com. The Samsung Galaxy S24 series is available for pre-order and ships January 31st. Pre-orders come with a free upgrade to the next storage option, including up to 1 TB on the Ultra.
