The Greatest GPU of All Time: NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti & GTX 1080 2024 Revisit & History - tech
(hx) 08:06 PM CEST - Apr,06 2024 - Post a comment / read (3)
The NVIDIA GTX 1080 Ti is the Greatest GPU of All Time thanks to a mix of value, performance, and timing on a market teeming with excellent choices. It was an era when the AMD RX 580 was largely competing in the mid-range with the GTX 1060, Vega hadn't yet launched, and Intel Arc didn't even exist as a thought in anyone's mind. In this 2024 revisit & benchmark of the GTX 1080 Ti & GTX 1080 (non-Ti), we're looking at performance today and how it compares to modern graphics cards. Upgrades on the NVIDIA side might include the RTX 4070 Ti Super or RTX 4070 Super if spending less, or maybe an RTX 4080 Super for more; on the AMD side, that is more likely an RX 7900 XT or RX 7900 XTX, or possibly the "new" GRE (with its global launch). The GTX 1080 Ti and 1080 Pascal architecture GPUs can't reasonably handle real-time ray tracing, so obviously those charts are absent. A modern card is effectively infinitely better. But for rasterization, they still hang in there.

Microsoft and OpenAI are making a new AI supercomputer called - tech
(d@rkfu) 09:59 AM CET - Mar,30 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
Today, a new report from The Information, citing unnamed sources, claims Microsoft and OpenAI are working on a joint data center project that will include developing a new AI-based supercomputer. the report claims this project could cost as much as $100 billion. The Information says that the project is being developed under the code name "Stargate". That also happens to be the name for the popular sci-fi film and TV show franchise from MGM. In that fictional universe, the Stargate program is a super-secret part of the US Air Force, where people from Earth travel to other planets via an alien-made portal that was discovered buried in Egypt. Today's report claims that Microsoft and OpenAI are currently in the third phase of a plan that will take five phases to build and develop this supercomputer as part of this data center network. Microsoft is said to be responsible for the financing of this project, which will reportedly be completed sometime in 2028. However, this report also claims that the Stargate project may be dependent on whether or not OpenAI will be able to deliver its next-generation AI LLM model, GPT-5 in a certain time frame. The Information claims OpenAI currently plans to launch GPT-5 sometime in early 2025. This new report comes on the same day that OpenAI officially announced Voice Engine. This project has been designed to create an artificial voice based on a real person, using a 15-second sample of that person's voice. However, the company has yet to release this new model, partly due to its possible use of creating "deepfake" voice of real people.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is a Mess: GPU & CPU Benchmarks, Bottlenecks, & Crashes - tech
(hx) 08:29 AM CET - Mar,25 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
Dragon's Dogma 2 came out to critical reception, with overwhelmingly negative Steam reviews relating to performance, crashes, microtransactions and DLC, and optimization. We're testing the CPU and GPU performance behavior and scaling in Dragon's Dogma 2, looking at how bottlenecks occur and which devices they impact the most. Testing includes CPUs like the 14900K vs. 7800X3D, 14600K, 2600X, 5600X, 12600K, 5800X3D, and more. We also tested on the RTX 4090 with a few spots of the 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4060 (before committing to a CPU comparison instead of GPUs). Testing looks at some of the best CPUs in 2024 for Dragon's Dogma 2 performance in heavy CPU load areas.

NVIDIA Is On a Different Planet - tech
(hx) 10:17 AM CET - Mar,22 2024 - Post a comment
NVIDIA had a lot of announcements this week between the Blackwell GPUs (which will presumably come to the RTX 5090, 5080, and others), its NIMs, the humanoid and other robotics Project GR00T, NVLink Switch advancements, and more. But in addition to covering those stories and some of the surface-level technicals that have been released so far, we're also talking about some of the absurdity of media coverage. This piece is a mix of news reporting on NVIDIA's GTC 2024 keynote and of commentary and opinions on the state of the industry, NVIDIA's scary position, and what AMD and Intel are left to do. Despite our focus in gaming, much of this technology eventually works its way into consumer parts (and it's just fun to learn about).

Fixing Intel's Arc Drivers: 'Optimization' & How GPU Drivers Actually Work - tech
(hx) 03:04 PM CET - Mar,17 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
In this discussion, we talk about a number of questions relating to GPU performance in gaming. Other than talking about how GPU drivers actually work, we get into what it means when a game is "compiling shaders" or is "caching shaders," what it means for a game to be "unoptimized" vs. the drivers or hardware, and more. The key goal is to define drivers and how they interact at both a hardware and software level, giving a better understanding as to what it means when Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD talk about "optimizing" performance.

Lords of the Fallen Patch 1.1.560 - tech
(hx) 12:55 PM CET - Mar,02 2024 - Post a comment
Hexworks just dropped a new update for their game, Lords of the Fallen. The new patch, 1.1.560, makes the game run smoother on all PC hardware. And guess what? They added a fancy new Cinematic graphics setting. In the past couple of months, the devs have been working on an extensive optimization pass for the game. And today's update introduces another significant boost to optimization. Thus, the game should run smoother on your PC on the exact same settings you’ve been using. Moreover, Hexworks added a new Cinematic graphics setting. This new setting is for the latest, most powerful, hardware, so that players can squeeze the full power of Unreal Engine 5. Or at least that’s what the devs claimed. In addition, this update also adds a new system management tool. This new tool will affect how duplicates (spells, quest items, etc.) interact with your inventory. From this patch onwards, any duplicates within your inventory will be removed automatically. Like always, Steam will download this update the next time you launch its client.

Corsair 2500X Review - tech
(hx) 11:14 PM CET - Feb,27 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
Corsair has begun selling 2500X and 2500D computer cases in ATX and Micro-ATX formats, designed for motherboards with power connectors on the reverse side. We are talking, in particular, about board models such as ASUS BTF and MSI Project Zero, which allow you to assemble a PC by hiding most of the wires behind the right side wall of the system unit. The “X” and “D” suffixes in the Corsair 2500X and 2500D model names indicate glass and mesh front panels. Both new items are available in white and black versions. At the same time, the manufacturer will release the 6500X and 6500D cases, which are larger versions of these models. All of them were originally presented at CES 2024 in early January. New items have appeared on the British Amazon, where they are offered for pre-order. The Corsair 6500X and 6500D are priced at 169.99 British pounds (about $215.53), while the 2500X and 2500D variants are priced at 129.99 British pounds (about $164.81). Their deliveries will begin on February 27.
