Google's Pixel Pro Phone now Comes in Two Sizes - tech
(hx) 09:21 AM CEST - Aug,14 2024 - Post a comment / read (1)
Google has officially revealed full details of its newest flagship phone lineup: the Pixel 9 series. For the first time, Google is offering the higher-end "Pro" model in two sizes: regular, with a 6.3-inch display, and "XL", with a 6.8-inch display. The larger model also has a larger battery and faster wired charging (37W vs. 27W), but specs and features are otherwise identical between the two Pro models. All of the new Pixel 9 models have a "industry-leading" AI performance thanks to a new Google Tensor G4 chip and at least 12 GB of RAM. All Pixel 9 models include satellite radios, for a new "Satellite SOS" feature. Similar to Apple's version of this feature, it lets you contact emergency responders and share your location via satellite, and the service is free for two years. Google also claims the Pixel 9 is twice as durable, has a 35% brighter display, and gets 20% better battery life when active, compared to the Pixel 8. The ultra-wide camera also gets a boost to 48 megapixel, and the front camera has been upgraded with auto-focus. Google has also switched from optical to ultrasonic in-display fingerprint readers, which it says are 50% faster. A revamped panorama mode adds HDR and Night Sight. All Pixel 9 series come with seven years of full OS updates. The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL add a 48-megapixel 5x telephoto camera, which Google claims can zoom up to 20x for video with no loss of quality. They have the same 50 megapixel main camera and 48 megapixel wide camera as the Pixel 9, but the auto-focus selfie camera gets a boost to 42 megapixel. The Pro models also come with more RAM (16 GB), UWB, and a free one-year subscription to Gemini Advanced, including access to the Gemini Live conversational assistant. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold carries over most of the specs and features of the Pixel 9 Pro while adding an 8-inch tablet display inside. The cameras get a bit of a downgrade, though, with the wide, 5x tele, and selfie cameras clocking in at just over 10 megapixel each. The Pixel 9 starts at $799, the Pixel 9 Pro starts at $999, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL starts at $1,099. All three come with just 128 GB of storage. 256 GB is available for $100 extra; the Pro models are also available with 512 GB or 1 TB. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1,799 (with 256 GB storage). Pre-orders run through August 21st, and include free double storage with some carriers (including AT&T, excluding the Fold). The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL ship August 22, while the smaller Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro Fold ship later, starting Sept. 4.

Did We Get It Wrong? Ryzen 7 9700X & Ryzen 5 9600X Re-Review - tech
(konga) 03:51 PM CEST - Aug,12 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
Tom's Hardware is one of the outlets that found a bigger than typical gain for Zen 5 in games, and also a bigger than typical gain for PBO. The biggest factor that people are missing with that site's reviews is that they test with stock memory frequencies only for non-PBO results, and they only enable EXPO for their PBO results. This means the Zen 4 processors use DDR5-5200 and the Zen 5 processors use DDR5-5600, both with JEDEC timings, and then the PBO results used DDR5-6000 with EXPO timings. Steve has shown before that Ryzen chips tend to scale well with memory speed, so the boost to memory speed between architectures is pulling some of the weight in that review, while someone who tests with the same memory speed across all chips will eliminate that difference.

The Ryzen 7 9700X has a low price but does that lead to better performance (especially in gaming) versus the 7800X3D, 7700X and 14700K? And more importantly, is this a good upgrade for someone with a 3700X, 3800X or even 5800X3D?

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra - No iPhone Look - tech
(hx) 07:15 PM CEST - Jul,31 2024 - Post a comment
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra will have a major design change. Lately, Samsung has been taking a lot of cues from Apple, and I was worried the Galaxy S25 Ultra might end up looking like an iPhone. But it looks like that's not happening, thankfully. Samsung will use their own design for the Galaxy S25 Ultra instead of taking inspiration from Apple which is great news.

AMD Delays Ryzen 9000: 'Did Not Meet Quality Expectations' - tech
(hx) 11:19 PM CEST - Jul,24 2024 - Post a comment / read (1)
AMD has delayed the launch of its Ryzen 9000 CPUs ("Zen 5") to August 15th, with a possibility to ship slightly earlier, due to a non-specific inability to meet "quality expectations." The delay affects all four current models: The Ryzen 9 9950X, R9 9900X, R7 9700X, and R5 9600X are all delayed. Again, it is possible some models ship sooner. The current target is August 15th. We expect to get CPUs for reviews in time for this new release date. AMD provided GN with an official statement. We also provide some (mostly for fun) commentary on the current situation as it relates to Intel's huge CPU mess. Maybe AMD is trying to avoid looking like Intel.

Intel's Biggest Failure in Years: Confirmed Oxidation & Excessive Voltage - tech
(hx) 10:50 AM CEST - Jul,24 2024 - Post a comment / read (4)
Intel has finally published a statement about the instability of its Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs in the 13th & 14th Gen families of CPUs. The Intel 14900K, 13900K, and their alternative CPUs in the same generations now have a confirmed set of issues. Intel has formally acknowledged in a reddit post that its 13 Series CPUs had oxidation issues during at least one point of manufacturing history. It did not adequately define a date range. Intel also confirmed that it has excessive voltage issues on 13th & 14th Gen CPUs alike. The company has failed to adequately reinforce its support "commitments" for customers and has failed to give date ranges or serial numbers to help consumers identify if they are affected. Intel hasn't stated to what extent different CPUs are affected. To our understanding, K-SKUs are hit the hardest.

Intel Needs to Say Something: Oxidation Claims, New Microcode - tech
(hx) 11:33 AM CEST - Jul,20 2024 - Post a comment / read (2)
We don't know what the cause of failure is yet. We've received a lot of leaks and credible tips and, working alongside Wendell of Level1 Techs, we have been trying to get to the bottom of Intel's CPU failures. The current trouble is how reviewers should even test these parts for the upcoming AMD Zen 5 reviews though, as any changes from Intel will need to be reflected in that comparative data. Likewise, until Intel puts out a better statement, we simply do not feel comfortable recommending 13th and 14th Gen CPUs while this matter is pending. This video talks about tips we've received relating to oxidation or potential corrosion within the silicon, specifically relating to the vias, and other tips like excessive voltage, memory speeds, unstable frequency, and failure rates. This is not a complete investigation. We are still working and do not yet have a conclusion, nor do we have full confidence in any one failure mode.

Global IT outage: 'We're deeply sorry', CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz says - tech

A massive tech failure has caused travel chaos around the world, with banking and healthcare services also badly hit. Flights have been grounded because of the IT outage - a flaw which left many computers displaying blue error screens. There were long queues, delays and flight cancellations at airports around the world, as passengers had to be manually checked in. Cyber-security firm Crowdstrike has admitted that the problem was caused by an update to its antivirus software, which is designed to protect Microsoft Windows devices from malicious attacks.

CEO of Crowdstrike George Kurtz delivers an apology after global IT outage disrupts businesses including banks, airlines, train companies, telecommunications companies, TV and radio broadcasters and supermarkets.

Speaking to our partner NBC, Mr Kurtz said 'We're deeply sorry...the global issues were caused by a single faulty content update'.

He added 'That update had a software bug in it and caused an issue with the Microsoft operating system...we identified this very quickly and remediated the issue'.
