Why are we seeing a Ryzen 7 7700X matching or beating a Ryzen 7 9700X? Or a 7800X3D sometimes coming out WAY faster than the latest 9000 series CPU? Well the answer I believe lies in Windows itself, more specifically the scheduler on Windows 11. Though let's test this vs Windows 10 over a series of benchmarks in a two part series.

NVIDIA has released its latest GeForce WHQL Game Ready drivers, version 561.09, which brings optimizations for FINAL FANTASY XVI and God of War Ragnarök games, including support for DLSS 3 technology. It also adds launch support for EA SPORTS FC 25 and Frostpunk 2 games. The new GeForce 561.09 WHQL Game Ready drivers also add new GeForce Optimal Settings for Black Myth: Wukong, F1 Manager 2024, and Star Wars Outlaws games. Unfortunately, it does not fix any previously seen gaming bugs, but it does add several general bug fixes, including a fix for GeForce Experience where Performance Monitoring overlay could stop refreshing GPU information, a fix for NVIDIA App, where game filters may be missing when invoking the NVIDIA Overlay in-game, and a fix for performance issues in some workloads with Chaos V-Ray. Interestingly, there are no listed open issues with the latest driver either.

Here is the prologue of the game. The NVIDIA RTX 4090 is powerful enough to push constant 60fps at all times, even during fights. The gameplay footage was recorded with the NVIDIA App (which reduces the overall performance by around 5fps).

For those wondering, previously I found 24H2 was 11% faster with the 9700X when compared to the 'bad install'. Compared to the 'good install' it's 7% faster on average, and if you remove the best 10 results from the 43 game sample it's just 4% faster. So the margins will depend heavily on the games used for testing.

Mac users recently noticed that Microsoft placed a small banner inside the app to warn about the upcoming renaming. Future updates will change the app from Microsoft Remote Desktop to just Windows App. There is also a link to the official Microsoft Learn website where customers can find more information about what the "Windows App" app can do on different platforms. In a nutshell, if you have a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, Windows App will let you work with Azure Virtual Desktops, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and Remote PCs.

As of right now, Windows App is in preview, and you can get it for Mac from the Download Center. It is also available in the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and 11 systems.

This quiet announcement generated quite a lot of negativity among users. Many claim the new name would be very confusing when searching, working with the application, or providing tech support for inexperienced customers.

The Ryzen 9000 series benchmarks weren't the greatest but now there's a promised Windows Update (24H2) along with a new Optional Update for 23H2 that is supposed to change everything...again. We tested this and realized there were some serious problems with a clean install of 24H2 if we compared it to an identical 23H2 setup. And that caused us to have some very unrealistic expectations about these CPUs and what the update can achieve.
