The Quiet Man second playthrough adds sounds and speech - preview
(hx) 06:11 PM EDT - Oct,16 2018 - Post a comment
A free update for The Quiet Man due out one week after the game’s launch will add a “New Game Plus”-esque mode with sounds and speech unlocked after the first playthrough, Square Enix announced during the game’s latest Japanese live stream. The first playthrough of The Quiet Man will lack sound or speech, minus certain special sound effects for hitting enemies or taking hits. This is because the protagonist Dane himself is deaf. However, with the update, players will be able to experience the originally soundless world with a new sense of life and discover the truth of the story in their second playthrough. Square Enix also announced that the game’s ending theme song, “The Quiet,” is performed by English singer-songwriter Imogen Heap, and that the game supports 29 languages. The Quiet Man is due out for PlayStation 4 via the PlayStation Store and PC via Steam on November 1.

A look at Sega's cancelled Shenmue remake - briefly
(hx) 06:08 PM EDT - Oct,16 2018 - Post a comment
Sega was once working on a remake of Shenmue and possibly Shennmue II, according to a Eurogamer report. The remake was allegedly in development for quite some time before being cancelled due to budget constraints and development delays. Unlike the remastered version of Shenmue I & II released by Sega earlier this year, this version of Shenmue featured significant rendering improvements, proper shadow maps, higher resolution textures and foliage with higher complexity geometry, 3D objects for the previously flat textured roof tiles and fence post, ambient occlusion, upgraded NPCs, and more.

For Honor Marching Fire Released - briefly
(hx) 03:01 PM EDT - Oct,16 2018 - Post a comment
For Honor's Marching Fire expansion launches today. The expansion content is free to all current For Honor owners and will unlock the Wu Lin warriors upon opening the game. All players will have access to the new “Arcade Mode,” which acts like a battlefield simulation that is completely PvE and can be played cooperatively with friends. Participating in Arcade Mode will grant reputations for characters so it’s a good place to get started with a new hero. Ubisoft is also adding a new PvP match type titled “Breach” which will see players taking turns defending and assaulting a castle. Graphically, players will find improvements to in-game textures and a newly redesigned lighting system. If you’ve played For Honor before and have been gone for a while, you might not notice these changes, but they’re there. You may, however, notice quality of life improvements such as changes to the game’s UI and team voice chat. The four new heroes look interesting and adding a Chinese faction seems like a good way to add some badassery to a fighting game. They include the Tiandi who wields the Dao blade, the Shaolin who is a warrior monk using both his staff and fists, the Jiang Jun who carries a guandao, and–my personal favorite–the Nuxia who uses hook swords.

For Honor: Marching Fire is available today for PC, PS4, and Xbox One
Battlefield V - Official Single Player Trailer - movie
(hx) 10:47 AM EDT - Oct,16 2018 - Post a comment
Electronic Arts has released the official single-player trailer for Battlefield 5. In Nordlys, players will resist German occupation in Norway, sabotage behind enemy lines as an unlikely English soldier in Under No Flag, fight for a home they’ve never seen in Tirailleur, and in The Last Tiger (available in December) join the crew of a Tiger I as they question why they fight. This basically means that the game will launch with three single-player War Stories, and the fourth one will be added in December (presumably as a free DLC content). Battlefield V is due out worldwide for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Origin on November 20.

TechNews - Best Gaming Monitors 2018 - tech
(hx) 05:34 PM EDT - Oct,14 2018 - Post a comment / read (3)
  • Best Gaming Monitors 2018: G-Sync, FreeSync, Budget and More - After years of near-stagnation, the monitor space - and the gaming monitor space in particular - has exploded with innovation in recent years. There's screen-smoothing adaptive refresh (in both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync flavors), ultra-high refresh rates (up to 240Hz!), curved displays and ultra-wides (both aimed at increasing immersion) and pixel-dense 4K screens with high refresh that are visually stunning but as hard on the wallet as they are on pretty much any graphics card setup.
  • WiFi 6 Promises to Make WiFi Standards Easier to Understand - The WiFi Alliance today announced WiFi 6, a new name and release for the wireless networking standard that the Alliance hopes will clarify which devices can work together to offer the best experience. WiFi 6 is based on the 802.11ax spec. Devices that are designated as WiFi 6 will support all WiFi technology up to 802.11ax. The new naming scheme is retroactive. For example, WiFi 5 will indicate devices that support up to 802.11ac, and WiFi 4 will mark devices that support up to 802.11n. The naming scheme should help consumers, who will no longer have to understand the exact specification. Moving forward, devices will be able to indicate which version of WiFi they support and which actual connection is made between a phone or other device and a hotspot. This information can appear in on-screen connection menus for clarity. In addition to the new name, the WiFi Alliance says WiFi 6 "will deliver an improved experience to address device and application needs in a range of consumer and enterprise environments." The Alliance expects the new generational terminology to be widely adopted by the WiFi ecosystem. WiFi Certified 6 certification and devices will arrive in 2019.
  • Evidence of Supermicro Infected Hardware Found at U.S. Telecom -  Bloomberg says that security expert Yossi Appleboum has found evidence of altered Supermicro hardware in a major U.S. telecom's network. Mr. Appleboum has worked for the Israeli Army Intelligence Corps and is now co-chief executive officer of Sepio Systems in Gaithersburg, Maryland. His company was hired to scan data centers for an undisclosed telecom and discovered that a server was performing unusual communications. An implant was discovered on the server's Ethernet connector. He says that his company has seen other modifications on hardware being imported from China and explained that Supermicro isn't the only victim of the Chinese supply chain.
  • Super Micro mobos used by Apple, Amazon contained Chinese spy chips - In response to the discovery, Apple is reported to have scrapped some 7,000 Super Micro servers in its data centers, and Amazon sold off a Chinese data center. Apple ended its relationship with Super Micro in 2016, although it maintains that this was for unrelated reasons. Super Micro, Apple, and Amazon all deny every part of the Bloomberg story. Amazon says that it's untrue that "[Amazon Web Services] worked with the FBI to investigate or provide data about malicious hardware;" Apple writes that it is "not aware of any investigation by the FBI," and Super Micro similarly is "not aware of any investigation regarding this topic." Bloomberg may be misunderstanding the 2016 incident in which a Super Micro server with malware-infected firmware was found in Apple's design lab.
  • Facebook Wants to Put Video Cameras in Your Private Spaces - When not in use, the Facebook Portal can display your Facebook photos and videos and can prompt users when closest friends are available for chat. The hi-fi speakers on board are also powerful, allowing for an immersive listening experience. The larger Portal+ has two tweeters and a large 4-inch diameter bass driver, while the smaller Portal has two 10-watt full-range speakers on board. The 15.6-inch Portal+ has a 90-degree rotatable 1080p display for both portrait and landscape screen orientations. The smaller Portal has a 10.1-inch 720p display that is fixed in a landscape orientation. Both devices have a four-microphone array with 360-degree beamforming input for clear voice transmission even in noisy environments, and 12-megapixel 140-degree angle of view cameras with 8x zoom. The Facebook Portal is available in Black and White finishes, and in Portal and Portal+ variants. The Portal retails at USD 199 (SGD 272), and as a pair with US$100 savings at USD 298 (SGD 487). The Portal+ retails at USD 349 (SGD 477). Preorders in the US begin today, though pricing and availability outside of the US have yet to be announced.
  • Office 365 Versus G Suite: Which Cloud Service is Best for Business? - If you’re moving a new organization over with connected mobile users mostly accessing productivity applications through web browsers, G Suite may be the right choice. The Microsoft suite is usually preferred by larger organizations, because most IT departments are already accustomed to managing and supporting it.
  • Mozilla Kills Live Bookmarks, RSS Feed Subscriptions in Firefox 64 - A software engineer at Mozilla has bad news for Firefox users who have enjoyed its built-in RSS support: that functionality is being terminated from Firefox 64 onwards. More specifically, the built-in feed preview feature, subscription UI, and "live bookmarks" are being removed from the core browser. RSS/Atom feed support will now be handled via add-ons, rather than in-product.
  • Facebook Says Hackers Accessed Users' Personal Data - Facebook today provided an update on last month's hack. The hackers used accounts under their control to access the tokens of some 400,000 users. Using automated techniques, the hackers then boosted that number into the tens of millions. Facebook now says that 30 million accounts were definitely impacted, which is less than the 50 million it had originally estimated. Of those 30 million accounts, 15 million had their name and contact details (phone number, email address) scraped. For 14 million, the hackers stole their name, contact data, as well as username, gender, location, relationship, religion, hometown, birthday, device types, education, work, and locations/posts in which they were tagged. For 1 million people, the hackers didn't access any information. Facebook says users can check to see if their information was stolen via its online Help Center. The social network also plans to proactively email people to let them know what data was taken and how they might protect themselves. Facebook says the hackers did not compromise Instagram, Messenger, Messenger Kids, Oculus, Pages, payments, WhatsApp, or Workplace. The investigation is ongoing and Facebook is cooperating with law enforcement.

  • Apple Releases iOS 12.0.1 to Clean Up Bugs -  Apple has made iOS 12.0.1 available to iPhones and iPads. This is the first public update since Apple released iOS 12 last month. The goal of today's update is to resolve performance issues and stamp out bugs that were part of the initial public release. For example, iOS 12.0.1 tackles a problem that prevented some iPhone Xs devices from charging properly via the Lightning port. It resolves a problem that caused iPhone Xs devices to join 2.4 GHz WiFi networks instead of 5 GHz networks. It fixes an issue that made Bluetooth unavailable, and a problem that prevented subtitles from appearing in some apps. It also restores the original position of the ".?123" key on the iPad keyboard, which had been switched with the emoji key. iOS 12.0.1 is free to download from Apple.
  • Apple Plans to Give Away Original Content for Free to Device Owners - Apple has revealed that iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV owners will be getting original content on its upcoming digital video service for free. Subscription options, such as HBO and Starz, will be available for those wanting premium channels for a fee.
  • Apple under fire for allegations of controversial business practices - There have long been allegations that Apple is overcharging its customers for repair charges, and so the CBC News team decided to go undercover to see whether or not these charges are true.
  • Google Debuts New Chrome OS Pixel Slate - Google says the Pixel Slate has a custom display and dual front-firing speakers for stereo sound. Custom audio algorithms create crisp highs and powerful lows. Google will give people a free three-month subscription to YouTube TV with their purchase of the Pixel Slate. The computer has 8-megapixel front and rear cameras that include tools such as portrait mode and a wide-angle lens on front for video chats. The Slate runs an all-new version of Chrome OS. The UI more closely resembles Android and is easy to use by hand. It is capable of running full-powered Linux and Android apps
  • Google Reveals Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL with Bigger Screens, Better - The phones will come in sand, black, and white. Like preceding generations of the Pixel line, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL are made from a combination of metal and glass. The 3 has a 5.5-inch screen while the XL has a 6.3-inch screen. The phones feature improved cameras that work hand-in-hand with apps such as Google Photos and Google Lens. It includes Google's HDR+ for capturing rich, detailed images. The phone includes Google's dedicated Pixel Visual Core for processing images. A new tool called Top Shot captures images before the user presses the shutter button in order to ensure the best shot is taken. This feature has been on phones for several years. Another feature called Super Res Zoom to help with zoomed-in shot. Google says it merges slightly different photos to create brighter, cleaner images
  • Google Pixel 3 Advertising Demonstrates Active Edge Features - Google Pixel 3 advertising in Japan is showcasing the Active Edge feature of the upcoming smartphone. Active Edge technology was used in the Google Pixel 2 as a way to launch Google Assistant and silence alarms, timers, notifications, and incoming calls.
  • Google to Shut Down Google+ After Security Lapse - Google has came clean about a security problem it first discovered in March. One of the APIs that helps people share their account profiles with others through Google+ was inadvertently left open for apps to access. Google says about 438 apps had the ability to access user data, including name, email address, occupation, gender, and age, for a lengthy period of time. As far as Google knows, none of the 438 apps were aware of or used the security hole to take user data. Google believes the public profile data of about 500,000 people was left exposed, though not accessed. Google patched the bug immediately in March, but chose not to reveal this information to the public for fear of regulatory reprisal. Further, Google says Google+ has seen traffic diminish significantly, with 90% of sessions lasting less than five seconds. Due to the security lapse and the low usage, Google has chosen to sunset Google+. Consumers will have 10 months, through August 2019, to download their data before Google+ is turned off permanently. Google+ initially hoped to be a social networking alternative to Facebook. It later scaled back the service with a focus on businesses and groups
  • Google to Limit What Apps Can Do with Gmail and SMS - Google has said it plans to limit what apps are allowed to do when granted access to users' Gmail accounts and SMS, contacts, and phone call logs. In Gmail, Google will curtail the types of apps that are allowed to seek permission for Gmail data. Google says only apps that directly enhance or improve email functionality will be allowed to access Gmail. Further, apps that do need access to Gmail will need to adhere to strict new rules and be subject to occasional security audits. Similarly, Google plans to limit which types of apps are allowed to seek users' SMS, call log, and contact information. Apps will need to show specific reasons for wanting this information. Only apps set as the default SMS and calling apps will be allowed to request such data. And users will be able to control this with more granularity. Last, Google plans to make contact interaction data unavailable to apps and developers. The company will make this change through the Android Contacts API over the next few months. Google encourages developers to review the new guidelines and update their apps accordingly. For end users, the result means apps will have less access to their data.
  • Huawei's Honor Brand Fully Reveals the 8X - Honor has announced the 8X, a new mid-range phone that offers many of today's most-wanted features in a more affordable package. Honor says its chip-on-film technology and new antenna design allowed it to achieve a 4.25mm bezel along the bottom of the display, with a total screen-to-body ratio of 91%. The phone is powered by an octa-core Kirin 710 processor, based on the 12nm ARM Cortex A73, with a Mali G51 GPU.
  • Samsung Galaxy A9 Adopts 4-Camera Configuration - Samsung has announced the Galaxy A9, a mid-range device that is among the first to include a four-camera array on the rear panel. The stand-out feature is this camera, which includes wide, telephoto, and normal lenses, as well as a depth-of-field camera. The wide-angle lens has an 8-megapixel sensor at f/2.4, the 2x optical zoom telephoto lens has a 10-megapixel sensor at f/2.4, the main camera has a 24-megapixel sensor at f/1.7, and the depth camera has a 5-megapixel sensor at f/2.2. Samsung says these cameras allow people to flex their creative muscles. Software such as Scene Optimizer and Portrait Mode help expand and improve imaging. The front camera has a 24-megapixel sensor. The Galaxy A9 has a 6.3-inch full HD+ AMOLED display, octa-core processor, 6 or 8 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. It supports memory cards up to 512 GB. • Samsung reported to be dropping 3.5mm jack with Galaxy S11 and Note - ET News, one of the more reliable Korean outlets responsible for outing Samsung's future plans numerous times prior, has now penned a report suggesting the company will do away with the old-school 3.5mm headphone jack with the release of the Galaxy Note10 next year or, at the latest, with the Galaxy S11 in 2020. The wireless earphones market has grown significantly in recent years, and this may be part of why Samsung is apparently willing to ditch the antiquated port, which has been with us since the 1950s. The smartphone manufacturer will likely also adopt the dongle life going forth, as the report suggests a headphone jack to USB-C adapter will be included in the box with future devices. That means the Galaxy S10 may be the last flagship from the South Korean giant to feature a headphone jack. With two of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world dropping support for it, it seems the days of the headphone jack are numbered, indeed.
  • Samsung Wants Developers to Put the Note9's S Pen to Use - Samsung has made its S Pen SDK available to app developers. The company announced the SDK earlier this year. Developers will be able to use the tools in the SDK to create custom apps or actions that center on the Galaxy Note9's S Pen stylus. Critically, Samsung added Bluetooth to the S Pen for the Note9, which opens up a wide range of possibilities for developers. For example, the S Pen button can be set to respond to a single or double press to interact with an app's features. Further, the S Pen Remote allows users to control their Note9 from afar. Adding remote triggering to camera apps and similar can improve the overall experience of using apps with the Note9 and S Pen. The SDK is free for developers to download and use.
  • Samsung Says Foldable Phone to Act Like Tablet - Samsung's forthcoming foldable phone will perform like a tablet when unfolded, and like a phone when folded, according to Samsung mobile chief D.J. Koh. When in tablet configuration, the device will support side-by-side multitasking for power users. "When we deliver a foldable phone, it has to be really meaningful to our customer," said Koh to CNET at the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy A9. "If the user experience is not up to my standard, I don't want to deliver those kind of products." Koh went on to say he believes the product has staying power and won't be a gimmick that vanishes just months after it reaches the market. The phone will be made available globally.
  • Sprint Slowly Rolling Out VoLTE to Several Samsung Phones - Sprint has begun offering customers VoLTE service. VoLTE allows for higher-quality voice connections when the call is passed over the LTE data network, rather than the legacy voice network. VoLTE has been available from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless for years. Sprint already offers a high-quality VoIP service called Calling Plus. Sprint's new VoLTE service replaces Calling Plus, which is being phased out. "Before we do updates market-by-market on various devices, we are alerting Calling Plus customers so they can decide whether to continue using the feature until our VoLTE launch is complete," said Sprint in a statement provided to The Verge. Right now, VoLTE is only availably to the Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and S8 Active. It is limited to just 15 markets, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, Indianapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Sprint did not say how quickly VoLTE will be made available to additional phones and markets.

An associate, Colton Conter (a.k.a. "Exentric"), is also being sued. Both defendants have displayed their use of cheats in various YouTube videos.
